Saving a Bird Fishing Offshore | Key Largo Catch N Cook

In this video:
We end up saving a bird while fishing offshore off Key Largo, Florida. And don't worry this catch n cook is with fish and not the bird! So let me begin by explaining how this fishing trip went.
It's a full moon and I was eager to get out on the water super early to high speed troll for Wahoo. We wake up at 5am and I pack all my fishing gear for high speed trolling. I make coffee and get Beata out of bed. We have to start fishing early if we want to catch a wahoo.
We run out of tavernier creek, just north of Key Largo in South Florida. It's about a 5-6 mile drive over the patch reefs to get to the reefs edge. We zig zag troll between 100-200 feet of water. Trolling around 12-16 knots. It doesn't take long before we hook into a nice black fin tuna. I love tuna and already know i'm making sushi later!
We keep on trolling and our efforts seem futile. Something breaks off my daisy chain. Grrr there goes $40, I shouldn't have bought the expensive one haha. After some more trolling offshore I see a panicking bird being carried by a frigate bird. Poor fellow, the frigate bird drops the laughing seagull and I quickly drove my boat up to the scene which deterred the frigate bird. I was determined to save this bird. I love birds (but I would never want one as a pet, so loud!)
We end up taking the bird to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center. This is in Tavernier. They will let me know how the bird does and if it can be saved. I will leave an update about that in an upcoming video. Would be awesome if he can be saved.
When we get home it's time for sushi! Time for the catch and cook part of the episode to take light! I will be cleaning the black fin tuna and then turning it into sushi, so I guess there isn't actually any cooking involved. Just catch and fillet. I am wondering if I should start naming my videos catch clean cook instead of just catch n cook, but we shall see. I will show you how to make sushi. It's not super professional but I think I explain how to make sushi in a understandable way.
I show you how to fillet a tuna. At least this is how I fillet a tuna right now. The sushi turned out amazing! This was a truly awesome offshore fishing, bird saving, catch n cook experience for us!

It's cool you can catch your own sushi, But if your going to make sushi out of of fish bleed it right after you catch it ,cut the gills so it bleeds out the meat will taste better, and the rice , rinse it a good amount till the water is clear , the rice vinegar goes in after the rice is cooked and when you buy the vinegar it comes seasoned and plain the seasoned vinegar has Miran it which is rice wine and sugar, ( just buy the seasoned rice vinegar ) you need to watch some sushi chefs videos from Japan it might help you sushi experience , great video ( hope the bird was ok ) Tight lines bro ! 👍🏼

Good video. I notice when your filleting your tuna you struggle a bit. One way to make it easier is to make a cut down the center line from head to tail and fillet it in 1/4's instead of trying to do the whole side at once. This way makes it easy to skin and slice out the dark red blood line too. Just a thought, keep up the good work.

It makes a freezing cold ice slushy and cools the fish down faster. Same reason a warm beer will cool 5x faster in ice water then just sitting on ice. Conduction =)

"That's what she said', lol. Frigatebirds don't eat adult seagulls, what you witness was a frigate bird stealing food from the beak or even throat of the seagull.Frigatebirds are notorious for stealing food from other birds in mid-air like that.

We circled around the seagul once and it didn't have any food. Then the frigate bird grabbed the seagul and flew 10-15 ft into the air with the gull in it's talons before dropping it.

Frigates are known to attempt to eat baby and some smaller juvenile birds. I learned this as I wanted to remind myself of what a frigate bird was, and Wiki has a fair bit on their habits.

Another trick you might want to try , and save $ on bait . Take your fish skin after your done fileting the fish and cut into strips about 1" wide . ( you will have to try different length ) Then add too the last hook on your skirted trolling lures . It adds a little bit more , ( sent & flash ) . I live on the south weastern shore of lake Ontario and it works great for salmon here . Not that you are fishing for salmon but it's free .
