As somebody who started with 40k, then went to scale modelling, and am now coming back to 40k for Kill Team, your tip at 6:37 was very good advice. Corvus Black actually makes a more convincing "Black" than a pure black, for a reason specific to scale. If we imagine these miniatures, or a scale model vehicle, are life size, then for us to see them at that size means we would be standing fairly far away. In the real world, colours become more washed out the further away something is, as your eyes are also perceiving tiny amounts of light refracting off the air in the atmosphere. So making blacks more of a grey-black is a really simple way of enhancing realism at scale.

It's rare, but since there are a handful of colours that have Base, Dry, Air and other equivalents through the range with the same name, it seemed safer to just include what type exactly I was using.

I'm pretty sure there was an illustration of a Savlar Chem Dog in the 3rd Edition Imperial Guard codex. There was a double page spread with dozens of images to illustrate the diverse appearances of IG regiments from different worlds. It was a shock returning to 40k last year to find the Guard getting about with some highfalutin faux gothic name.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think they showed up in the lineup of the couple dozen Imperial Guard regiments as inspiration for conversion and stuff. I remember there was also a Karl Kopinski piece accompanying them on the old (old, old...!) 3rd War for Armageddon campaign website, too!

I do like the paint names on the screen, I think a little graphic, like what they use on the website where you buy the paints would look really fancy too. I think things like that will go a long way to impress new viewers. I’m already hooked though so you do you and I’ll watch :)

Colour swatches I'd thought about, but decided not to go that way for two reasons. First, not all colour swatches are accurate! Some of them in no way match what comes out of the pot, so I figure they're next to useless as a visual pointer when I'm painting right there. Secondly, not all the paints I use actually have colour swatches on their websites. It's relatively rare, but short of taking a photo of a bottle of some Vallejo colours, there's nothing to use! It's an odd one, and I know that some painting channels do make use of it, but this still isn't really a full time gig for me - gotta cut at least the occasional corner, right? ;D

The little (big) soldier is marvellous, as always: the fabric is bloody smooth! indeed, the colours on screen are good but for personal taste i find more useful the good old list in the description, divided by company: i can rapidly copy the list and then see the video without any hustle.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think I'm going to ditch the description lists for much that reason; it's a little easier to copy a shopping list if you really need them. Still, for the little extra effort involved, reaction is pretty positive. I might just make the text a wee bit smaller next time around!

This looks great! I was imagining a scheme like this when I finally get my hands on some of the new Krieg guys. Regarding the paint name title cards, I find it even more useful when tutorials keep the paint name on-screen for the whole time they’re using it. It makes it easier when skipping around the video trying to figure out what colour they’re using for a particular part. If you’re worried about the aesthetics of that I think you could get away with making the text like 50% smaller. Having said that, your tutorials are so easy to follow that I wouldn’t stress about it if it’s gunna add an inordinate amount of work. Keep doing what you’re doing!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio

Smaller is actually a really good suggestion. It's a bit difficult doing these for the first time to know exactly how large they're going to end up - my editing software doesn't have a particularly useful preview, unfortunately!
@Sturmensky

Fantastic video as always! It was nice having the colour names on screen. However, having them only in the description works just fine, so don't worry about upping your workload hideously. Also, I *really* don't know why Stegadon Scale is called *green* lol. I have perfectly baseline vision and that is *very* blue!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio

I think I've actually found about the quickest way to do it after tweaking the approach for the latest video - I've got adding each paint name down to about thirty seconds at the most, now, so it isn't as if it's an onerous chore to include them! :D I'm glad I'm not seeing things!

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Glad to hear you found a way that isn't painful. Incidentally, I loved the latest video! Speaking of, you've given me the urge to grab a box of those musketmen. Feel like they would go well with the Frostgrave Soldiers, as they both have floofy hats - maybe as marksmen?

I really do love watching you work. It inspires me to work through my own tendencies to be overly critical of my painting. I've had a hell of a time working on my new custodes unit. So here's a question. How would you go about painting their fancy blades? I've tried blending and Duncan Rhodes lightning technique but both ended up very poorly. Way I see it I've got one more try before I need to strip their swords o plastic and start over...

I don't really care for color listing because I know them already. I can see how this could be useful for newer painters though. At least I would have liked color listing when I started out. P.S. - Sotek Green still looks just as blue to me.

Did you do something special to your army painter brushes? Somehow mine don't hold a tip well at all... Don't really have trouble with other brushes, but my character and regiment brushes just fray like crazy. :( I can paint better with their synthetic brushes... Wonder if I got a bad batch.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 3 жыл бұрын
It might be? I've not had a problem across four separate Regiment brushes, and a couple of Character brushes. I don't do anything special with them, just rinse occasionally while painting so paint doesn't dry in the bristles while I work, but that's just water as well.
