Love watching your videos and seeing how the mill is progressing. I am from the UK and its interesting to see the differences in how we do things. Over here FAS is the grade for first and second quality timber, the first and second boards cut from the outside are considered the lowest grade because they have so much sapwood, the grain angle is so low causing the board to be really unstable and the least attractive grain.

Mark and Eddie, I love your video's and look forward to seeing each one. I have an idea for your cab to make it more sound proof, you have said in the past that it has acrylic windows, so just add a small spacer on the outside, maybe 3/16" and add another layer of acrylic sheet. That will cut the noise down and give you more protection. Also, your splitter behind the blade needs to be higher and curved slightly to the inside of the cut to make each board fall away from saw helping Eddie to keep his fingers intact.

For me in 60 years of cutting wood,, there have been some tough woods,, but white oak is among the top. Installed many white oak floors,, a good use for white oak,, clear (often is) vertical grain (often is) but don't ever try to use it in a counter top or something that need a lot of sanding. White oak can dull sandpaper.

When i worked at the Cabbagetree Creek hardwood Sawmill in Gippsland , Victoria , Australia we used old fish&chip grease from their big deepfrier's as there were no conveyer's to get the large Hardwood trees the the breaking down saw's , it was all done using spikes or tractor's . some of the lumber was about 25 ft in length & had a girth of 6 ft the breaking down saws were placed one above the other , & were powered by a large steam motor as these were easily repaired on our down day's , both breaking down saw's were like the one that you are using at your mill ,but never had removable teeth , a guy from Orbost came to us with replacement saw's every 3 days for the bigger saw's for the smaller ones it was once every two weeks , the smaller saw's were used in much the same way Eddie use's his for cutting firewood or fence palings ...

Sometimes they don't come back.Think I'm gonna ask for half up front for now on. 100% agree with you on turning the log. Especially hardwood. To much stress in the wood. Plus it makes better lumber.

A couple of comments. John Clark (fricknjeep) has said that wood with the bark on doesn't dry - the bark acts like a sealer. Dave at Engels Coach Shop says that for wagon hubs he waits one year per inch of wood to get proper drying. Hope this helps.
