Here's something you don't see every day. This Capehart was introduced in 1956 and was a fairly expensive player back then. Capehart was a higher end manufacturer that really didn't make "junk". This player is TRUE HI-FIDELITY & has a fairly robust transformer chassis amplifier with a pair of 12AX7's & a pair of 6V6GT's with a 5Y3GT rectifier. At 60 years old, this still has all of its original Capehart tubes...and they all show strong! All of this is fed through a pair of 12" speakers & a pair of 5 1/2" speakers using a 3-speed Capehart marked VM changer. Note the magnificent amount of tone control on the face! BTW, this is known as a "Colortone" because the sliding tone controls change color when adjusted.
This player has been restored and is ready to enjoy. With the player comes the 45 adapter, the ORIGINAL instruction book, the changer instructions, a new spare 45 needle AND the PHOTOFACT FOLDER. I did not bother to adjust the speaker cloth which is sagging in spots but it's all there and I'm leaving it for the next owner to play with!
This player IS for sale so if you have an interest just contact me. This is an ideal QUALITY player with a smaller than average footprint to fit in those tighter spaces. This COULD be just what you're looking for!

My uncle had this exact same Capehart model, purchased brand new in 1956. In 1958 with the arrival of stereo, he added a DeWalt amplifier, a huge Magnavox external speaker and replaced the tonearm and cartridge on the original VM changer. Voila! Stereo! The original VM changer only lasted until 1963 when the drivewheel gave out. It was replaced by a Garrard AT6. My uncle had this piece right up until he died in 2001. Not sure how much he was using it in later years. Seeing this Capehart console on YT is like seeing childhood again!

Very cool! I've got it's big brother, a 53PH56F, not only does it have the turntable but it's got an AM-FM tuner and a much fancier cabinet. The unit sat in my grandparents dining room for as long as I can remember and no one in the family every remembers it working, so I'm going to get it going.

I know if I've ever seen one, I didn't know what it was, Glen. It's a big, clear sounding player, for sure. Wish I had more room :-) Nice piece.

Another fine specimen for you to share with us. Thanks! The intriguing thing about it for this era is the multi-band EQ/tone control. (And record curve compensation) Very Hi-Fi. Only other thing I know of contemporary with this player was called the Blonder-Tongue Audio Baton. It was a stand alone, tube, mono, Hi-Fi component equalizer. Company was best known for TV equipment such as antenna amplifiers etc.

I saw a TeleFunken console HiFi from the late tube era with a 5 band EQ. Early 60's. That easy listening, where's my Daiquiri?

Hi Glen - Good to see your videos on the channel again! That Capehart looks good and has a great sound, but I can understand that you gotta get some things out in order to get new items in. I've been there... still are!! See ya -- Atco

Very cool. I have the table top model 46TP56. I did some restoration on the amplifier, but tone controls need more work. It's a 4 speed changer. Missing 45 adapter, no surprise.

The early records did not all follow the RIAA EQ curve. Some other standards were around and 78s also did not follow it. I had a mac mono preamp which also had NAB early 78 and flat for a microphone.

Nice specimen, that's almost like the "5 band graphic equalizers" that were all the rage in the 1970s and '80s, but 2 decades early.

That's exactly what it is! They're still the best thing to improve sound but they have 10+ bands now. Only the terminally audiofoolish would go without one! He needs to set it in the classic smile!!! I'm using a pair of 10 bands in series to make a $60 'boombox' not sound like a plastic box while I'm in a nursing home. Getting 30 Hz low B 5 & 6 bass guitar notes outta the thing's 4 inch speakers!

The first home equalizer??? Capehart was ahead of it's time!!! He needs to demonstrate the controls, not leave it with the damn midrange way up (duh) and put on some Little Feat or Phish!!! Playing that midrangey Mantovani album with the midrange cranked does this player no justice at all! Midrange is the thing that makes clock radios sound like clock radios, HAHAHA!!!

@@Musicradio77Network, it was in my pedal guitar lesson book as Greensleeves & with lyrics it's What Child Is This. I improvised it a into a cooler tune via using the wrong pedals & levers on the pedal steel & transformed it into a MUCH COOLER version! A 'mistake' on a pedal steel often produces a perfectly usable chord & a WAY COOL new version of a tune! I bet I made the writer of the song turn green & roll over in his grave, LMFAO!!!
