Paul actually addresses this issue. Not all Israel is Israel. "But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.” That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed." Romans 9:6-8 So the elect is the subset of that nation "according to election" as Paul says in chapter 11. He uses the example of Elijah complaining about the people of Israel as a whole being baal worshippers. "Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, But what does the divine response say to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace." Romans 11:4-5 It's interesting that in the example of the Israelites, God invites more people into the people of God than who are actually elect. God extends the invitation to many to come and partake of his goodness, but it's those elect individuals who apparently do not bow the knee to Baal in the end.

2 Peter 3:9 He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
@JR-rs5qs6 ай бұрын
This verse doesn't concern all men for all time. It's in the context of those God was saving leading up to and including the events and destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70AD.
@JR-rs5qs5 ай бұрын
@christsavesreadromans1096 the context of 2 Pet 3:9 is the passing away of Heaven and Earth, i.e. the Old Covenant Age, not the actual physical destruction and remaking of the Cosmos. The promise Peter refers to a few verses later is that of Isa 65 and 66 where there's still death, babies being born, etc. However, this NH&NE is new because righteousness dwells. I think you meant to share a different verse than 1 Tim 3:10.
@c2s29425 ай бұрын
@@JR-rs5qsPeter was executed before the destruction in 70AD, so no, he wasn’t writing with that in mind. It means what it says: God wants everyone to be saved. John 3:16 and 17 reiterate that as well.
@JR-rs5qs5 ай бұрын
@c2s2942 Peter's death prior to 70AD is inconsequential to the issue. Check out the Young's Literal Translation in both 2 Peter 3:9 and John 3:16-17. These cannot be Arminian proof texts by any means. If God wanted to save everyone, He would do so because salvation is purely a work of God in a person's life. Otherwise God is impotent in accomplishing His own will. If it's synergistic, I recommend a false church based in Rome.
@JR-rs5qs5 ай бұрын
@christsavesreadromans1096 1 Tim 4:10 is a difficult passage in light of many other verses regarding the exclusitivity of the belief in Christ for salvation. Do you believe 1 Tim 4:10 supports universalism? If so, how does that square with having a Gospel to believe at all? Taking the verse in a universalistic sense betrays the verse itself when Paul says 'especially'. If all men receive the same thing (salvation) that believing men receive, why (especially) believe? Christ is indeed the Savior of all men in that He is the Savior of the human race. He did not die for angels (of which some were fallen) or any other creature. There's evidence that 'especially' could be translated as 'particularly'. Additionally, there's no other Savior than Christ for mankind. Without His work, all men are ineligible at salvation and we are yet in our sin.

Election is not merely access to the truth, but an unbroken chain that includes access to the truth and ends glorification (aka heaven). Scripture says: For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. Romans 8:29-30 NASB2020 bible.com/bible/2692/rom.8.29-30.NASB2020 How about his one from Ephesians: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He favored us in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our wrongdoings, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us. I would love Dr. Heiser to explain what else Paul could be meaning by the many passages where he says salvation is through Gods grace and election (to name a couple Ephesians 2 8-9 and especially all of Romans 9). I understand Gods election of Israel is not salvation because Paul explains that but then while breaking that down he builds the argument that salvation through Christ is an act of grace even foreknown by God. Or in other words election if not a new and better election. I guess I would have to fall under the term Calvinist (although I very much have fought against it) I wasn’t raised that way but after studying the gospels I can’t find any refute to it logically. Even passages where people argue against determinism like with God telling Jonah he’s going to destroy Nineveh but then changes his mind can still be seen as determinism because the point wasn’t that God was going to destroy Nineveh the point was to have Jonah be obedient and teach him that God can show mercy to whom he chooses. So he didn’t really change his mind that outcome was already known by an omniscient God but if he had told Jonah hey got prophecy their destruction and on by the way they will repent so I won’t actually destroy them Jonah probably wouldn’t have learned the lesson in a meaningful way that we Today can also learn from. Edit* I also have known for some time he swayed more to Armenian views than Calvinism due to his position on the image of God as it relates to our creation. I happen to Agree with his explanation on the image but I don’t think we have to have completely free will to be God’s image bearers. We can be his image bearers in the sense that he has appointed mankind to have and inherit the earth making choices under the illusion of free will by being guided to our choices by His invisible hand. True Free Will would require a reality with zero consequences. You can’t make a person form them for a vessel of honor who has been shaped by his God ordained environment when you know all the possible outcomes then put that person in a situation you know will end in the result you want by them making a “choice” and call that free will. And even if you don’t like that God is right in that. As Paul says in Romans 9:19-21 19“You will say to me then, ‘Why does He still find fault? For who can resist his will?’ 20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?”

Romans 9, is not hard to understand. Just start at the beginning of Romans 9. Paul makes it clear that he is going to talk about the Jewish people who were the ones to receive the promise. It would come through Jacob, not Esau. The whole Love Hate wording is a Jewish saying which uses the exact same words Jesus used when He said if you love Him you must hate your father, mother, wife, husband, and child. It does not mean damn your mom to hell, it means to give preference to Jesus over them. Much like God gave Esau a mountain and nation but gave Jacob the much greater gift of being the branch from which Christ would come.
@EmergencyMoto4 жыл бұрын
@@rdoncarlos I’m fully aware that his saying Jacob I Loved but Esau I hated didn’t mean he was damning Esau. That’s not what I was talking about. I also understand Paul is speaking to Jews concerned and confused why more of the chosen people of God are now seemingly not being chosen for salvation. My problem is when you take the large number of instances Paul clearly stated in usually plain language that No one through free will chosen Jesus and thus salvation. But our ability to understand and receive the gospel and believe and accept Jesus comes through the Holy Spirit giving us our understanding and faith. If it was one time and said in a metaphorical way sure no problem. But it’s repeated over and over clearly and plainly. If you go back and read the exodus account that Paul alludes to in Romans chapter 9 you see this progression where pharaoh hardens his heart but near the end he’s actually had enough and wants them to go but the final plague hasn’t happened yet and there it says God hardened his heart ultimately making pharaoh change his mind. Now if God can and clearly does influence us to make decisions we weren’t going to make through free will .... is there actually free will? That is the thing I’ve never had explained to me and why I’m left to just believe the text means what it says. That sure we might have the illusion of free will but what god has ordained will happen no matter what we “choose” through our own or some outside influence interceding. And Paul clearly states our salvation, even our faith which gives us said salvation is not our own but bestowed upon us as a gift. Did we believe and make a choice to follow Christ... Yes... but were we always going to get there ... well clearly that too or we would be vessels of dishonor created for destruction. Does that mean we don’t evangelize because God already has his list of pre destined so it doesn’t matter what we do they will find him eventually? Absolutely not! We must because even though someone maybe predestined to God we don’t know who is or who isn’t and the way those are called are by us proclaiming the gospels. Sooo does it really matter.... I guess not Armenian.... Calcanists.... we all believe salvation through believe in Jesus and that we must spread the gospels .... just one of those things we’ll all find out later and we won’t care who was right or wrong in the end

@@EmergencyMoto Augustine Calvinism is rooted in gnostic philosophy (specifically Manicheanism). The early church fathers believed in free will along with Augustine, until his gnostic influence changed his position because of infants and baptism. Where do you think the doctrine of total depravity comes from? Gnosticism! We are depraved, and salvation does belong to God, and it is Him who initiates salvation, but the imago day remains before regeneration. We all have the capacity to respond to God’s prevenient grace when we hear the proclamation of His Word through the anointing of the Spirit (faith cometh by hearing). Predestination does not nullify free will; it supports it. God has predestined us according to His foreknowledge (1 Pet 1:1). Only a God who supremely reigns over His creation could ”work out all things according to the counsel of His will” while allowing His created beings to remain autonomous. God did not make automatons; if He had, He would be a liar, considering authentic love is only demonstrated through freedom of choice. And we know that ”God is not a man that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19). Ravi Zacharias states: ”If love is the supreme ethic and freedom is indispensable to love, and God’s supreme goal for you and me is to love Him with all our heart and our neighbor as our self, for Him to violate our free will would be to violate that which is a necessary component so that love can flourish and be expressed.” Monergistic Determinism over-emphasizes God’s sovereignty and power at the expense of His love and justice.
@EmergencyMoto4 жыл бұрын
@@upsidedownkingdomministrie7405 it’s a nice thought but again no one ever deals with the text this is a classic example where someone will spout some history or a church father or use a verse that proves one thing they are trying to prove like (God does not lie) but that is only to proof their own believe of what they think God can do and in this case what love and feee will is. But that isn’t what the text says. Again I challenge you (or anyone) read the exodus story back in exodus that Paul alludes to in Romans 9 .... you say “authentic love is only demonstrated through freedom of choice” .... but God didn’t give pharaoh a choice .... in fact the text says pharaoh made his choice to give in to God’s and Moses command but then God hardened his heart ...taking that choice away.... Look I’m not coming from a place of malice and I don’t want to cause dissension amongst brothers... but either the text that clearly says God caused pharaohs heart to be hardened and changed his mind is a error in translation or we have change our idea of authentic love because that’s just one example God influences choice. To use one of Heiser own famous Devine council references the two kings of Israel got together and while the king of Israel’s prophets of Baal told him to go and attack he would be victorious. The king of Judah ask for a prophet of Yahweh who basically says God sent a member of the Divine council to be a lying spirit to Baals prophets to get him to go and fall. Sooo it’s not just one there are many examples of God interfering with supposed free will. Again I don’t have a problem with God’s right to do this. He’s God and I’m not. And it only strengthens my love for God that he despite myself would choose me and give me the grace of a belief in him and faith in our Lord Jesus.

The answer to predestination is in understanding that God is omnipotent omnipotent and omnipresent. Jehovah understands and sees the beginning from the end and the end from the beginning. He knows who will turn away and He knows who will repent and return. I believe we are sealed from the foundation of the Earth, but because the father knows that we will choose Him, because we always have free will and choice. This is beyond our comprehension as a human. This is a greater Kingdom principle and a mystery. The Lord Jesus knows what sheep belong to him, and He will seek out His sheep. While He knows, we do not. It is up to us to continually stay in relationship with Him.

I think a huge misconception among people first introduced to the doctrine of election is that God “predestines” or “sends” people to hell. He does no such thing. Damnation is already our destination due to our being born of a sinful nature. That is why God the Father did his saving work through God the Son to bring us back into a relationship with Him and out of the direction we are already headed (hell - eternity outside of/apart from God). It is by His grace and mercy we are saved alone through faith in Christ as our lord and savior. We are completely and utterly without merit for being saved and yet He loves us so much that some, chosen of His good and perfect will, are brought into glory with Him. Rather than asking “Why doesn’t God save everyone?” it’s likely best to ask “Why does God save anyone?”. And the simple answer is... for His glory!

I love being challenged. As a Calvinist in my theological belief structure, I need to look into this more. Is it a dispensational thing? It would be very interesting - using his own words stating that being chosen (or elect) does not equate to being eternally saved - to see him argue Romans 8:30. This is what is known as "The Golden Chain" and it reads like this (ESV), "And those whom he PREDESTINED he also CALLED, and those whom he CALLED he also JUSTIFIED, and those whom he JUSTIFIED he also GLORIFIED." I would agree entirely that many, many Israelites did not enter God's rest (heaven) due to idolatry. The scriptures call them "my chosen people". But I don't believe that that means that each one of them was a chosen person. It's good for me to wrestle with this! It will either help to change my mind as a Calvinist, or it will help to solidify it. Thank you, Dr. Heiser.

Read all of Romans 8. This is not instructions on how to be saved. Notice the past tense. Paul is encouraging Christians to see how God has been faithful to previous believers, and he will be faithful to them as well (even in the midst of persecution). Those who are predestined for heaven first were called, but it does not say all who were called believed. In fact, Judas was chosen, but not glorified. All are drawn, but not all believe.

Taken from BibleRef: "What does Romans 9:7 mean? Not everyone physically descended from Israel actually belongs to Israel. That's what Paul wrote in the previous verse. He seems to have meant something similar to what he wrote in Romans 2:28 that "no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly." The spiritual aspect of our relationship with God is far more important than our ethnicity, heritage, or biology. Now Paul begins to give examples from Israel's history to clarify his point. To begin with, not all of Abraham's offspring were counted as the "children of Abraham." Some of them were not included in God's promises to Abraham's descendants. Both Abraham's son Ishmael, born before Isaac (Genesis 16), and his sons with Keturah, born long after Isaac (Genesis 25:1-4) were excluded from Israel. Paul quotes from Genesis 21:12 where God said to Abraham that it is through Isaac that his offspring will be named. Jesus made similar remarks to His critics, as recorded in the gospel of John (John 8:36-39)."

@@brandedforchrist YES, Dr. Heiser was an UNAMBIGUOUS Trinitarian who believed Jesus is God. And he didn't only use Psalms 82 for the Divine Council theology he used Deuteronomy and a slew of OT scriptures as well. Even angels are called Elohim throughout the OT, and we know some are JESUS (manifesting Himself before His time), like the Burning Bush (I AM) for example. The Trinity are ALL Elohim, "disembodied spirits", but only ONE ELOHIM (The Trinity, all being the same Yahweh) are Yahweh (creator, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent etc.), the Creator who created everything, including the Elohim. Lastly, if the Elohim in the Divine Council are MEN, what are they doing in the heavens and why is God telling them they are all Elohim (fallen angels), but they will die like men. If they are MEN, that's just stating the obvious/ Of course they will die like men if they are MEN and not Elohim. When Yahweh sent an angel to direct Moses or Abraham, God made sure to tell him, make sure you listen to this one. THIS ONE is different than all the rest, with the authority to Judge you. They had seen Elohim (angels) before, but God warns them, listen to every word of this one ... THIS ONE is different than all the rest (God's unique son/the God of the Trinity). Lastly, Dr. Heister doesn't "sound so smart", he is smart, having devoted his entire life to learning the scriptures in every language and the original text, so he was able to correct some errors in the English versions. Don't be envious. Learn! Devoting his life to the Bible in Hebrew, Greek etc., every word, is admirable and not to be mocked. There is not a word or verses in the Bible where he couldn't give you the original text and meaning. He always said his primary board was to get the modern out of your head, STOP THINKING LIKE A MODERN, and think in far more spiritual terms like the ancient Israelites. Stop being afraid of your Bible if it doesn't verify your modern thinkings. For example about half of Christians just dismiss or explain away Genesis 6, the story of the fallen angels and Nephilim, because it's not what they learned in Sunday School and it's too weird ...which is sad because Jesus Himself warned that the last day would be like it was in the day of Noah (i.e. Hybrids). Trans-humanism?

@@2GunRock Come on my friend, don’t you have the Spirit in you? Why do you need a man to teach you the scriptures using philosophy when God can teach it to you in truth.. You rely on Mr Heiser to tell you the truth and that’s where you err greatly to the point where you can’t see the truth as it is in Jesus Christ.. . Do angels die? No they don’t, so why would God tell them that they will die like men since angels cannot die? Is God confused? I certainly do not think so.. . You clearly ignored the fact that Jesus said that that verse in the book of Psalms was actually referring to men and not angels and that’s how seductive Mr Heiser teachings are, you begin to reject anything and everything even the words of the Lord Himself so that you can continue believing the lie.. Jesus quoted that verse to prove that God called men gods in the scriptures and the Jews were angry with Him for saying He’s the Son of God, nowhere did Jesus even for a second hint at that verse referring to angels at any time but men like Heiser whom you think is a Bible scholar are preaching otherwise and you’re accepting it.. . I don’t care if Mr Heiser spent his life studying all the scriptures in all the languages in the world, you can devote your life to studying and researching the scriptures all you want, if you don’t have the Holy Spirit teaching it to you, you’re no better than the Pharisees and the Sadducees who were scholars of the scriptures but couldn’t recognize God.. . No man can change the scripture not even Mr Heiser.. He came with a new revelation and interpretation of the word and many who are not built on Christ flocked after him, he has spoiled so many with philosophy and history of the second Jewish temple which has nothing whatsoever to do with understanding the scriptures.. . I was once a student of Mr Heiser myself, I spent a year learning all his lies and fabrications of the word until the Lord granted me repentance to see through his lies and I pray He will do same for you my friend..

What Heiser does not grasp is this: everyone is called to serve the Lord, but not everyone called to serve the Lord is also called to be saved, elected. Jesus makes this clear about the 12 disciples in John 17. The same applies to the nation of Israel.

Will the Holy Spirit teach a man that Jesus Christ wasn’t fully God in the flesh? . Mr Heiser uses philosophy and traditions of the Jews to spoil those who haven’t learned of Christ, he tries to get into the minds of the writers of the Bible instead of him to seek the mind of Christ who Authored the Bible but used men as vessels to accomplish it.. The writers were not writing from their own understanding, they were writing what the Spirit wanted them to write and it is the Spirit who teaches us the scriptures because He authored it. . I have been listening to Heiser for years but God brought me out of his false teachings that are totally contrary to the truth.. . Imagine saying God was speaking to the divine council when He said “let us make man in our own image” and people believed it.. He also said that Psalms 82 was God speaking to the divine council but when Christ referenced that verse of scripture, He said God was speaking to men and He used to defend His claim that He’s the Son of God.. Elect means chosen. Elect: chosen to service. Gnosis means knowledge of spiritual information. Gnosticism: is teaching the knowledge of that information in a deceptive way. There is a responsibility to knowing the 'Truth', and that you are 'elect'. For only Christ is the Elect One. His Truth requires men to share that truth as they are His servants. The 'knowledge' only comes from those truly in Him Christ. Gnosis means knowledge. I had a comment deleted months ago when stating to become a god is to self-promote oneself to a ruler, authority, when God did not. Knowing knowledge of salvation and using against God's will is gnosticism.

Not all Israel is Israel. Meaning not every physical descendant of Abraham is elect. Not everyone who says a prayer of salvation, attends a church building and speaks Christianese is saved. Paul touches on all the great biblical themes in that hyper-complex sentence - sanctification, adoption, redemption, and glorification - and all of them rest on one foundational doctrine, the doctrine of election. The most superlative spiritual blessings stand on Ephesians 1:4 - "He chose us [elected us] in Him before the foundation of the world." That's not what it means. It never says that. In fact. Paul goes on to say that the reason some the elect did not find the righteousness of God was because they didn't seek it by faith.
