A lot of the male population back then went to trade schools to be electricians, mechanics, plumbers etc. and would have been familiar with motors. Now, everyone goes to shitty colleges to get low-paying white collar jobs, because being a tradesman is seen as lowly despite that they’re often making better money than a paralegal or IT technician.

​​@@thomasbrennan6303 a big part of it is trade schools are kinda useless now and you just end up with people who have read the books but no actual skill who are more of a pain to train than people who didn't go to trade schools. Combine that with the fact that the trades destroy your body over the course of your career makes it so there's less people doing it cause even if you're making more money you have to judge if the lifetime of pain that will come with it is worth it to you and for a lot of people the bit more money just isn't worth it. A lot of trades also don't pay all that much anymore unless you get lucky like a lot of welders only get like $13-20/hour now even though they're usually seen as one of the trades that make a lot but something like it can make you $30/hour not having to destroy your body

First story is less "disturbing" and more just frustrating. Just one horrible decision after the other, the first being to let Kenneth out on parole in the first place, when he had a history of violence. Second was the Everett going to the home alone without contacting police first, knowing Kenneth is armed with a weapon. And I don't think I need to list the various police blunders afterwards.

If he didn't want to do it himself because he was in a hurry to get to them, had he just told the manager to call the police "tell them my BIL is attacking my wife and kids with an axe" before leaving there might have been a different outcome. Idk if the family would have survived but at least Everett would have been caught. Telling someone to contact the police and giving his address would have taken seconds.

Thanks to him not reporting anything to anyone the father didn't call the police after 2 weeks, because that's when that brainfart told him about the bloody shoes. Thanks to that Kenneth had 2 weeks to get rid of the evidence. Yes, the police made mistakes, but it starts with that manager.

What I don’t understand about the first case is why Lydia called Everett and not the police, and why Everett ran out without calling the police. If a violent criminal was in my home with an ax, I’m not going in there unless I’m carrying or the cops go in first. Clearly, the cops could have gotten there quicker than Everett. Then the manager sees someone who isn’t Everett get out of the van with bloody shoes and doesn’t think it’s strange enough to call the police? The whole thing is just very strange in regards to how everyone behaved.

Chicago PD is well known to be one of the most corrupt in the country. I've known heaps of people from Chicago who would never call them for anything, no matter what. The city spent $91m settling lawsuits against repeat offenders in the police department in only two years between 2019 and 2021, there was two whole decades where they would routinely bring Black men to black sites and torture them (yes, this is well-documented and proven) to gain false confessions, there have been multiple individuals and groups within the department who planted evidence for false charges against *hundreds* of (again, Black) people, sometimes because they wouldn't pay "taxes" (extortion, exactly like the mafia wanting protection money), sometimes because the police officers had grudges, sometimes just because they could. Again, well-documented and proven. It's not like they actually solve cases when they're not framing or torturing people either. They arrest someone in less than 20% of homicides - they claim a clearance rate of about 50%, but that includes cases cleared by the main suspect dying or being closed because they don't have enough evidence, which means they would include this story in that 50% for both reasons. Nationwide, case clearance in which someone is actually arrested is more like 47%. If you're Black and live in Chicago, being noticed by police is pretty much the worst thing you can do.

Everett leaves the store because his brother-in-law is threatening his family with an axe (AGAIN) and then the shop doesn't call the cops when said BIL comes in for some snacks with his shoes covered in blood later in the day?? Or in the 2 weeks after when Kenneth doesn't show up for work?? And when the cops are finally called they barely investigate, despite how suspicious the circumstances are?? Just what the hell...

The first case is very weird. I don't know why Lydia didn't have Kenneth thrown out when he threatened her 2 days before. If legally there was nothing she could do, she should have left with the kids and asked for some outside help. I don't know why Everett didn't just call the police, either. Kenneth 100% killed them.

I think the Anglin brothers got away. A friend of theirs said growing up in Florida they would attach a rope to boats and catch rides from place to place without ever being noticed, and there was one boat trip from the island to the mainland at the same time they would have been in the water. Also i don't think anyone would plan an escape with that much detail without a solid plan for what to do once they made it out.

I'm from the UK and when i was 20 I did a East coast to West coast (via a trip up North and the Deep South) road trip with 3 friends. We had an amazing time and stopped at every 'Welcome to ??? " sign and then strolled around a few hours seeing any sights worth seeing before moving on. When we got to the outskirts of Gary, we got out of the car to take a photo of the Welcome to Gary/You are entering Gary sign (some towns/cities had different phrases), as we posed for the photo we heard 2 shots and 2 bullets hit the sign inches from our heads!!! 💀 We dived into the car and drove through Gary at 70 mph with my mate driving as low in his seat as possible. We didn't brake once, ran 2 red lights and didn't sit up straight until Gary was fading into the distance in the back windscreen!!. We stopped in many weird little places in our 6 months trip (a lot with horror movie, serial killer, 'Deliverance' vibes. But we did our stroll around and see (if there were any!) the sights at each stop. We made memories to last a lifetime, most of them great, some not so great & one where we nearly got murdered!! We started in Maine, then Boston, Washington Dc, New York City WTC observation deck on the South Tower as it was 9 years before 9/11 (I went back to NYC in 2022 and went to Ground Zero & the Museum 😢 Florida, Disneyworld, Miami, Palm Beach, Florida Keys, Everglades, Alabama & Louisiana, New Orleans. Then we drove North up to the Great Lakes, Chicago, Gary!! ❌, then drove South to Texas, Arizona, Grand Canyon, Nevada, Reno, Las Vegas. Then headed North to do the Pacific North West. Oregon, Seattle, Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, then back down the Pacific Highway to San Francisco, Death Valley, Yellowstone National Park, El Capitan, the site where Spahn Ranch had been (we all read 'Helter Skelter' by Vincent Bugalosi , 'Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S Thompson' & The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' by Tom Woolfe when it wasn't our turn at the wheel), Malibu, Big Sur, Beverley Hills & Venice Beach before finally flying home from LAX to London). Whenever we meet up, now 30 years later, take out the many photo albums and chat about the trip, the first place we talk about is the one place we never looked around: Gary!!! (Home to the Jackson Five and one crazy SOB who tried to kill us!! 😮

I'm 52 and I've been watching investigative reports and movies about Alcatraz for more than 40 years. This is the first time I've ever heard mention of the escapee who successfully made it to shore in a makeshift raft constructed from rubber gloves. Considering how much more preparation the other men made for their escape attempt, if he could do it the others probably could have also. For now I suppose all we can do is continue to wonder.

I agree with you. I think there was way too much emphasis put on the fact that they found the boat and they found the oars and other items. And then they found one of the wallets. First of all, they're not going to take the boats with them, they're not going to take the oars with them or any of the other junk that they carried across. And it is possible one of them left their wallet behind to trick the men chasing them into thinking that they didn't survive? I agree with you that I think they made it. I also heard in another documentary that they had made arrangements with somebody to meet them on Angel Island and they were supposed to take them somewhere. So if that was the case they wouldn't have needed to rob somebody and steal a car or anything else.

@@donnad5981 If I were in their shoes I would try to dispose my makeshift boat as soon, as possible, since police definitely would be searching for any makeshift devices escapees did use to get on their track. Which, if done in certain way, would also create illusion, that boat crashed and nobody survived.

It was a well planned escape and they had to do it that night. Otherwise, why not delay a night and figure out a way to make the other prisoners grate loose. They had a meeting spot person

[1:50] Wait, lemme get this straight. Everett had to cut his call with his father short and bolt out of his restaurant in a hurry because his terrified wife (Lyrdia) called and said her and their children had just locked themselves in a bedroom after Lydia's violent, convicted felon brother (Kenneth) was threatening to kill them all with an axe (for the second time in two days!). A couple hours later, Kenneth, the axe-wielding brother, shows up to Everett's restaurant in Everett's van and the manager immediately notices his shoes are caked in blood... yet, for some reason, it took *TWO WEEKS* of nobody hearing from Everett for his father to call the police and request a welfare check?? And if that wasn't bad enough on its own, the cops then show up for the welfare check... Kenneth answers the door and tells them Everett, on a whim, loaded the family into the van and took off for Philadelphia... completely failing to realize the van was sitting right there in the driveway?? THEN, a couple days later, the police pull the van over for a traffic violation and it's Kenneth driving the van alone... and they AGAIN fail to realize that this is the van that Everett, according to Kenneth, had supposedly taken to Philadelphia?? What the hell is going on? Why was *everybody* involved in this case so abysmally incompetent?! Regardless, my sincere condolences to Kenneth and Lydia's remaining family and loved ones.

@@robertmartin6953 Mythbusters concluded that.... it was plausible to reach land. The diagrams he used for that part are very similar to those the Mythbusters used. Depending on how they charted a course... they might have reached the peninsula accidentally even. But that being said... no one's really sure they lived.

I think the men nade it when they escaped from alcatraz. They were so pin point precise in every part of their planning that i find it hard to believe that they wouldnt have had plans in place for different issues that may happen at sea as that was probably the most dangerous leg of their escape.

I see a lot of people are blaming the employees "why didn't they call police after seeing a man in stained white sneakers?", I'm wondering why didn't the husband call police on his way to home? I have a feeling this was a regular occurrence and the employees were aware of weird stuff happening with the family before they disappeared and felt there was no reason to be bothered with police.

Cell phone weren't really a thing yet. He should have called police immediately and then set out, but I suspect he was not acting rationally and went full fight mode. Without a cell phone, he becomes a one man army that is easily overcome.

@@burnedpotato2 That poor family had suffered long term bullying and intimidation from the crazy brother, so tried to handle him without involving police. They were too scared of reprisals to call 911 on him - but when the guy is threatening you/your wife and small kids with an axe, there's no sensible alternative to calling in cops. It may well be it escalated fast, so when Everett got home, he found his wife and kids murdered - and he was next. Horrific way to die. The mother must have known her son was unhinged, it was wrong of her to split the house between her kids in her will, it made her daughter vulnerable to a future attack by the brother. And he as well as easy access, had a big financial motive to kill her as co-owner of the property. Just so tragic a whole family was wiped out,

That is weird, but it makes sense the more you think about it. It's true people do it all the time. But they tend to do it during the window of time with the lightest currents, with guides alongside pointing them in the right direction as those currents constantly drag them off course. In the dark with waves slapping you in the face, freezing cold water, no tide charts, and currents that can go twice as fast as the average kayaker, it would be almost impossible to plot a course to land. You'd just have to strike out and hope you got lucky on timing and direction- otherwise you could easily wear yourself out accidentally swimming upstream.

My grandmother was living with/ common law married to an Anglin when I was a teenager and he swore up and down that they made it. I saw some of the supposed correspondence and pictures firsthand. They are just as grainy as you would expect. But the Anglin family wholeheartedly believed that they made it to South America. At least, the ones that I met did.

I think the three inmates who made it off Alcatraz never got to land, primarily because they were never picked up again. A habitual reoffender doesn't go straight; they always reoffend.

I have intimate knowledge of them making it. Also people smart enough to pull off what they did could easily go the rest of their lives without reoffending. Also offenders don't always reoffend. I personally know many who were in and out in their 20s who are now approaching 50s and haven't reoffended in over 20 years.

While theoretically possible they escaped, they would have had to commit a dozen crimes immediately just to survive, several more to leave the country, and then yet more to get established in another country. So many things would of had to go right, without getting caught a single time, despite them getting caught multiple times in the past ... that occam's razor applies. I love the guy going around in the comments boldly claiming to be part of the family and knowing for sure they got away ... it's exactly nonsense like that which when true gets escapees caught, lol

There are actually inescapable prisons, though, but they aren't so close to the civilisation. So even if you do escape prison itself, environment will kill you.

I'm actually more frustrated with Everett's employee than the police... My understanding is: He knew the family situation with Kenneth, knew he was volatile, knew he had threatened the family before. He knew Kenneth had an emergency he had to rush away to at home and that he never saw or heard from him after that. He also likely knew that Kenneth's close family lived far away, thus it's less likely they would call police to check on his welfare or notice something wrong right away. And after WEEKS of no contact from his boss, that OWNS the business he works at, he never thought to call police to check on him or his family? That was bad enough even BEFORE he saw the bloody shoes. It's so crazy to me. It strikes me as someone that maybe felt like "oh whatever, I just don't want to get involved."
