Just to clarify: Elsa USED TO be able to control her powers. The first few minutes of the first movie shows that. However, when she accidentally hurt Anna, that control went out of the window because she started being so scared of it and was in conflict with it growing up.

Mother Gothel might be the best Disney villain of all time. Yes, I'm serious. Dudes like Scar and Jafar are fun to watch, but they lack the realness of Gothel. Gothel is THE evil stepmother. The quintessential version; the peak of the archetype.
@Nobody-zl3kk
@Nobody-zl3kk 2 жыл бұрын
@@trequor I disagree with including Scar in the lack of realness cathegory, Jafar can stay there although i can see someone argue otherwise about power hungry cult people and the like, but Scar is most definetly a real-life-like villain, its not really tangible to *your* personal life maybe but the megalomaniacal and power hungry tyrant that is willing to stab everyone in their backs and forsake their family, people and the overall wellbeing of everything around them just to get to the top of the game can be seen all throrough society. Be it at clubs, companies, institutions or goverments. Although i'm not going to argue for scar to take the number 1 spot in the disney villain ranking, that's an entirely different topic.

Tbh I feel like Disney having their female protagonists be “so strong they don’t need a man” has made it seem as if romantic interests makes you weaker. Idk if it’s just me but it took me the longest time to realize that liking other people doesn’t make me weak. It’s not just Disney’s fault but I see it a lot in their movies and while their intentions are great, I feel like they aren’t sending out the greatest message. Let me know what you guys think cause I’d love to hear!
@nicoleflores2054
@nicoleflores2054 2 жыл бұрын
@@xiuminsmarshmallow3375 i feel like the problem is how romances are executed in general, in my opinion, i consider having a partner is a big responsibility not only because of the situations you're gonna deal with that person but because of the role you're gonna have with them. it's important to keep a stable connection with that person, that way, the relationship feels trustworthy but at the same time it's pretty hard for the majority of us to even do that. if people don't want a relationship, that's fine, no need to force them but saying that they don't need anyone because they're "strong" or "independent" can be pretty annoying, because you still can be independent AND have a relationship. especially when people do this with female protagonists, just don't put "I love my partner so much" as personality trait and you're good.

Best scene in Tangled: Before the lanterns, it goes to Rapunzel's parents. Silent. Grief stricken. The father tears up, and its the mother that comforts him. It's typically the other way around. Any man who's been taught all his life to never cry probably lost it at that point. I know I did.

@@zoefernandez5369 well, there’s some reasoning to that. A lot of guys I know are very self conscious. They don’t think much of themselves often. This isn’t the case for all men, but for quite a few, they don’t want to come off too strong, or like they are just after something. Because there are quite a few cases of them being displayed like that in media. There’s also that a lot of men are attracted to people they consider friends, and as such don’t want to risk losing that bond because of failed romance. This isn’t always the case, but this is how it seems to be for quite a few cases.

And my boy was so excited to express his feelings for her, and when she noticed he felt the same way and they started singing 🥹🥰😍 Literally the only part I slightly hated was they ALMOST kissed. I really love that about it too!! Every single character gets a chance to shine and influences the plot in some way. Clawhauser is a character you would think at first glance is just there for a few gags, but he ends up being really important-- his introduction isn't just there to make you laugh, it's to make you realize how tragic it is that the prejudice against predators has cost innocent people like him their jobs. I agree. It’s also got a lot more interesting themes and messages mixed in with the movie’s story. Much like Zootopia (which is better imo) which focuses on Prejudice, Big Hero 6 focuses on grief. Frozen doesn’t really have any overall themes, though I suppose the theme of love does play a role in the third act, but it really doesn’t have a huge impact on the story at all.

I'd argue that Mother Knows best is a Top Tier Disney Villains song. It shows how manipulative and dark Gothel is as a villain and how she traps Rapunzel in her tower in a much more emotional way. The fact that Rapunzel had no idea Gothel kidnapped her is somehow darker than what happened with Snow White and Cinderella, who were aware their Stepmothers were evil.

One of my favourites protagonists, who comes from one if my top 3 favourite fictional worlds of all time, is a great example of this. She is an extremely strong character in her own right, devoted, driven, lawful good. She's an FBI agent, and was even a competent detective before earning her badge. She has her action hero moments but she also has her more introspective moments and moments of weakness. And yet she depends on her boyfriend (eventually husband), not to protect her from danger or the bad guys (though he is very protective by nature) but more often to protect her from her own mind, and her tendency to be a workaholic. There is so much to unpack and I can't possibly summarize 18 books and 4 novellas in this comment, but Lucy Kincaid is a perfect example of a strong character who is made better, not weaker, by the man she loves. Both in universe and as a narrative entity.

You put into words exactly on how I feel Disney has been approaching romance...as in, they basically ignore it now because they are afraid of criticism. But romance doesn't make a character weak or shallow if they have other emotions, goals, and characteristics. I miss having their characters having some romance. I feel Tangled was the last to do it right. Frozen's felt tacked on snd they pretty much took it out of all the newer films.

For me... I feel Tangled was easily the best of these. The way its story builds Rapunzel and Eugene without the instant love thing really works. It shows both as they slowly build a bond, it has both having big moments where they are the hero of a sort. Its animal characters are the best by a long long mile. The story between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel really goes into an area entertainment rarely trends. Gothel is easily one of the most evil charcters... she straight ganks Eugene in the back. Her real parents never say a word the whole movie and yet their emotions as parents of a lost child are PERFECTLY portrayed. Its really a beautiful movie.

I disagree; I think Zootopia's the best of these. I feel like it's the most solid of them (though Wreck-It Ralph is a VERY close second). I just found bits of Tangled a bit too stupid for my liking. @creeperash07 No, if that were the case, then she wouldn't continually compliment her own looks or look in the mirror so much. Also, after Rapunzel's hair is cut, what's the first thing Gothel does? Is it to scream that she's going to die? Is it like how Winterbolt reacts when his scepter is shattered in Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July? Nope! It's to LOOK IN THE MIRROR, and then to PULL HER CLOAK OVER HER FACE. Those are not things a person afraid of dying would do, they're more things a bratty high-school girl obsessed with looking like on the cover of teen magazines would do. So sorry, but your argument is invalid. It is a fallacy.

The thing I love most about moana that he hadn't mentioned was how Disney actually did research into Polynesian culture and not just focus on one country like Hawaii like lilo and stitch but pulling from a variety of pacific islands and that there's an actor/actress representing diff pacific islands dwayne:samoa, temuera and jemaine:both modern nz and maori culture and also auli'i being Hawaiian. I love how Disney is using actors of the actual ethnicity they're animating but also not being overly abnoxious about representing a culture and still having a story. It's the only song in the two movies that actually makes sense to be diegetic, and paints an idea of ice as this strange, mythically powerful thing - it's not just she has ice magic, it's the people of Earendel *actively fear ice magic*. The original A.A Milne’s Winnie the Pooh is actually quite emotional. You go on the journey of Tiger’s mental health, Eeyore’s depression and how he finds positivity in seeing the simple things in life, Piglet’s insecurities about friendships, Pooh’s insecurities as a whole that are pretty similar to insecurities we would have as children (loneliness, mental isolation, friendship problems, obsession towards unhealthy things) but most of all it’s Christopher Robin which is the really sad story here. We realise at the end that he made up a world in his mind to hide away from the fact he doesn’t want to grow up, see his family separate, and go to boarding school separated from his family. We realise that in the end- he can’t be a child forever, he has to let his friendships with Pooh and the gang go- but that the memories live on. That’s what makes Winnie the Pooh a timeless classic. You realise as you age that the characters Christopher Robin makes up are all mini personas of his insecurities and that it’s a tale about growing up while tackling the struggles of that crucial part of life. To me- the story is one of the most moving in child literature history

There's a lot in Tangled that you didn't pick up on! You talk about how well they portray Moana's struggle with imposter syndrome and her greatest strength being her empathy, and you totally overlooked the same mechanisms at work in Tangled. In "mother knows best", they're setting up a super realistic example of real abusive, gaslighting behaviour. You read this as "slow and clunky" and got close with the idea that the tone is unusual, but you completely missed the mark. In the scene where Rapunzel is flipping back and forth between ecstatic and anxious, that's very true to life for victims in her situation. Not only is the romance one of the most captivating that Disney has pulled off -- as you describe -- but the entire plot of Rapunzel's mother being emotionally manipulative is super well done and true to life. Also, and this is my bias talking, it's incredibly validating as a kid to see an evil family member, to recognise abusive behaviour in media and know you're not imagining it, which is of course what the gaslighter tries so hard to convince you. It was really life-changing for a lot of people, and I know myself it's been a comfort film since the day I first saw it. Wreck it Ralph is good but depicting an abusive relationship between a parent and a child? That's groundbreaking. For some, it really is a revolutionary moment in film history and just wanted to show you how wrong you are when you describe it as "nothing groundbreaking". There's a great video by CinemaTherapy about the 11 signs of gaslighting in this film that explains it really well, if you wanna check that out.

yeah, mother gothel is a really good villain when you change your perspective a bit. She's an excellent antagonist in THIS movie specifically because of how she preys on rapunzel's naivety and turns it into a weakness, keeping her in the tower by sheer emotional manipulation and gaslighting. The worst part about it is how accepting rapunzel is of this behavior, which is how real victims of abuse deal with a relationship like that- through normalizing and accepting it as something thats good for them. Later in the film rapunzel's naivety turns into a strength because of how she charms people with her enthusiasm, but mother gothel always has that strangle-hold on her until the end when she's finally confronted. I thought schafrillas wouldve liked mother gothel because of how realistically they portray a relationship between an abuser and their victim, but shes certainly not as grandiose as other disney villains (which doesnt make her any less good of a villain imo).

I know this may sound off-topic (unless you count the ending of Super Mario World 1’s soundtrack in the Wreck-it Ralph (and why it’s so awesome as opposed to the sequel) segment), but while I love Super Mario World hacks as much as the next guy, not all of them are perfect since while it did get worse over time (since the hackers are now limitless when it comes to what they could do with the SNES after the seventh generation era of gaming) a taboo of SMW hacking would have to be when in some SMW hacks like Bowser’s Secret Domain, the late Luigi’s Adventure games (still love Luigi’s Adventure 1 OSE tho), Classic Mario World 1 (one noticeable improvement the Definitive Edition made over the original is that the director of the CMW trilogy Bandicoot decided to keep the unimproved ending in CMW1 as one rather than two of the same thing in the Bowser and special worlds), Kamek’s Island (which I love because it’s by Gamma V), The Lost Adventure: Episode 1, Journey to the Mushroom Kingdom 1, SMW 2012: Master Hand’s Doomsday, The 7 Golden Mushrooms, Pandemonium Fortress 1, Lemmy’s Wrath, the Super Wed World duology and etc, THEY DO COPY THE ENDING OF SMW RATHER THAN MAKE UP THEIR OWN. So with that said, I would never do that with my future hacks including A Hundred Levels of Pure Hell. I know Mario’s Amazing Adventure, Super Mario Omega, Luigi’s Adventure OSE, Classic Mario World 1: The Magical Crystals (Definitive Edition), Strange Dream, SMW Garden (which is the weakest one besides Mario’s Amazing Adventure Revitalized because like Mushroom Kingdom Meltdown 1, it has overuse of non-custom music that gives us a part that would make us go “Oh yeah? Well, screw you back!”), Mario’s Strange Quest, Super Mario Omega would have the same ending, but at least we can actually alternately end these hacks (in SMO, you can end by activating the Red Switch in World X, the highlight of the game that makes it feel the most like The Second Reality Project 1 Reloaded, let alone Sonic Shortcut and Thirdspace).

I remember there being a darkly humorous Frozen theory that I ended up liking a lot, even though it made no sense. Okay, so at one point in the Rock Troll - song, the rock trolls finally shut up enough that Anna and Kristoff can explain she has a fiancé. And the rock trolls react to that by singing that they just need to "get the fiancé out of the way and the problem will be fixed", because they're terrible. Some fans then jokingly theorized that they meant that literally and put some kind of spell on Hans that made him act on his worst impulses and desires, while his true self was trapped in his cursed body screaming for someone to notcie this wasn't him. It's a theory that would probably fall apart under five seconds of scrutiny, but I've alwas liked it because it gave a somewhat entertaining explanation for Hans' sudden 180° and it made the rock trolls the real villains, which, yeah, screw them.

I will defend "Frozen Heart" (the ice-cutting song) because I think what is does for Frozen is similar to what "Fathoms Below" does in The Little Mermaid. Both open their respective movies, and while neither are exceedingly memorable compared to other songs in their movies or sung by any of the main characters, both songs lay the atmospheres and tones for their movies. Actually, upon looking up the history of the song, "Frozen Heart" IS in-part inspired by "Fathoms Below," so it's not just my interpretation! The last thing I will say is I remember sitting in the theater to see Frozen (I was 18, mind you, so it's not like I was an easy-to-please child), and when the movie started with the ice-cutting song, it gave me a real sense of that old-school Disney magic that I hadn't felt for a while, and it genuinely pumped me up for the movie.

I get that it’s just an opinion, but “the cutting ice song” aka Frozen Heart/Hjertefrost is actually based on Norwegian folk song and is a fucking bop. Most Norwegians would agree that that’s a cool song and that it’s great they added some Norwegian folk song in this movie that takes place in Norway. The soundtrack and the instrumentals in frozen also resemble it or go back and use parts of it again and again so it’s kind of important that that’s the intro song so it’s reminiscent again through the movie. Shame you don’t like it, because I’ve always thought it was super cool they had music that resembled Norwegian folk music :/

I legitimately watched that movie on repeat back in middle & high school and my heart would twist EVERY SINGLE TIME that scene came around . Vanellope’s pleas and Ralph’s grim determination to keep her safe was brutal asf

The fact that Ralph breaks the internet didn’t even TRY to be as legendary as the first one shows how good the first will always be. The second was to busy being a corporate mess, the first was full of heart.

I in fact DO have the cutting ice song memorized, and also it’s called “Frozen Heart”. However, the only reason I have it memorized is because the males in my jazz choir had to sing it for a Frozen Medley. So yeah, certified Frozen Heart expert here.

I'm also one of the few people who remembers Frozen Heart. But even then I don't include it in my holiday playlists. I also remember seeing several guys, including my acting teacher, sing the song in two different programs during 2014-15. One was a Christmas show and the other was a free (with non-perishable food donation) winter-themed concert in February. Both times it was part of a Frozen set. I'm just glad Fixer Upper wasn't in either 😅

Tangled's romantic scenes, especially the lantern one, were the most romantic animated scenes I have ever seen that actually made me feel really jealous and singled out.
@kristinahuchison2511
@kristinahuchison2511 2 жыл бұрын
I agree its the most beautiful, magical and romantic scene ever Disney or otherwise has ever created. I can’t see Disney actually trumping it either. My boy Flynn went all out to make sure she’d have a birthday she’d never forget! I just love how he’s been in love with her all day and is so excited to show his feelings for her by singing, “sorry boys, I don’t sing” and the dude has the voice of an angel. Honestly the only part that made this scene imperfect by like 1>% is they ALMOST kissed 😫😠 COME ON. My favorite Disney kiss is the first kiss with Pocahontas and John Smith, but if Rapunzel and Flynn would’ve kissed on the boat it would’ve easily knocked Pocahontas’s out

One thing that stuck out to me about Frozen 2 above all else was actually that Olaf scene where he realized that he was upset. He realized that he isn't just a one-dimensional character meant solely to be cheerful. He realized he had a right to express negative emotion. When your target audience is a demographic who is expected to be quiet and never angry, something like that is powerful. It's something kids need to see, and I'm so glad it got included. (Plus, anger in general is so demonized.)

Same, I really loved the side characters and the story and the messages about grief. I didn’t think Callahan was amazing, but for his purposes as a contrast to Hiro (anger in grief versus acceptance) he did fine. I also loved the creativity that was put in all of the designs for the characters and their hero costumes and such, those were really cool. All in all I agree, idk why Schaff slams this movie so much I think it’s delightful
