In the famous words of Knuckles the Echidna: “Anytime someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo.” I never once felt empowered by this character unfortunately, because it felt like I was being patronized with cringey flashbacks that did more harm than good. Not to mention I found Captain Marvel’s character to be bland and paper thin. Wonder Woman, however did literal WONDERS (pun intended) in this regard, because it didn’t feel like it was about gender, but about a PERSON taking charge and overcoming what others could not, and that person just so happened to be a woman. Far more moving and impactful, it’s a shame they handled Captain Marvel so poorly.

I know girl power films have good (marketing) intentions, but it honestly just feels like it's talking down to women. the part that talks about how captain marvel feels meh, but if she inspires women, more power to her, kind of proves that point It feels like marvel is saying "I know you can't possibly relate to or connect with all those MALE superheroes, so here's some poorly thought out crumbs for you." It feels like such a token gesture because they clearly don't give enough of a damn to write this properly into the mcu, but women are supposed to look up to her because she's powerful and a woman. It honestly feels pretty condescending. I don't dislike the motivations behind captain marvel being a girl power film because I hate feminism or I think brie larson has a bad attitude, or whatever people claim makes people dislike the film. I dislike it because there's this subtext that every other marvel hero wasn't actually for women and girls after all, because here's a hero for the women and girls (someone, you know, they can actually relate to, because since she's a girl, she has a lot in common with every other girl ever, right?) and girls can't look at inspiring male figures and think that they could accomplish that too someday. I don't think it's outside of the realm of possibility that a girl could look up to Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, or dare I mention the OG female hero of the mcu, Black Widow. It gives this impression that women and girls are so lost for role models that any hastily thrown together hero with flimsy motivations will do.... because she's so randomly powerful and we said she's awesome (cause of that girl power) so she's awesome and you need to look up to her. Would it have been so hard to write a Black Widow movie that everyone would have cared about because they've had time to get attached to her character? It just feels incredibly condescending. It's about the least feminist thing I can imagine, honestly.
@Antasma15 жыл бұрын
Almost all of the heros in the MCU are heroes because they proven themselves by earing their powers like Cap and Thor or simply being skilled or smart enough. "If you're nothing without the suit you shouldn't have it." Meanwhile, Captain Marvel doesn't get this moment. Who knew female empowerment was so literal. It's kinda sexist for her hero quality to be something unrealistic. "Hey little susie, you wanna make a stand as a hero?! Well if you don't get powers than you can forget about it!" She might as well be a gun. Heck, why not go with a story arc where she dies and with her last breath transfers her power to someone more worthy

She's a great actress, I was expecting spunk and life, here she looked bored as shit. She looks more excited talking about and promoting the movie than she looks in the actual movie. Black Panther was also a farrrrrr better character in Civil War than he was in his own film too. I hope they can do Marvel much better, because as it stands I can't root for her to beat Thanos silly. As he said here, she hasnt done anything that I cant see even Iron Man doing in the nano suit.

I wish more writers wrote like they did the script for alien. In it they didn't wright a single character with gender or race in mind. They simply we're interchangeable with whoever they ended up casting. That's why Ripley ended up being one of the most relatable female characters of all time. I really dont get how people say a character 'isn't 'for you.' For decades cinema has made characters that feel like their traits despite not sharing my skin tone, we've grown up on cartoons where characters are relatable despite not being visually like us. Static shock, jakcie chan adventures, and more. So when a movie has a forgettable character, lacking the same anatomy is the smallest excuse on the shelf for that character being forgettable and bland. The entire point of cinema is to bring people into the shoes of the protagonist and relate to them. I've never been a soldier, a lawyer, a doctor, a whatever, so why does not being a woman keep cinema from making relatable women? From making good women heroes? Personally my theory is that they lack examples. Everyone knows how to write a character they've seen a hundred times before. But when it comes to super powered women there are very few examples and it seems like no one behind the reigns are making good design choices. Another glaring issue is people want a lot of different types of characters yet these movies have only a couple women to half a dozen guys or more. How are a couple of women supposed to fill in a variety of character types when every audience member has different expectations? Love and sexiness usually ends up as the most marketable trait and oops, out of women characters, cant do more. We have generations of male characters being made to appeal to both genders, and succeeding in doing so. Its time to start doing that with women and step one is to make more than just one character so the love interest bullet gets sunk without taking out the only tits on stage.
@thetruedarksoul1685 жыл бұрын
SantaFire ` there’s the point of no relatability, and the added point that literally NO ONE asked for a captain marvel film. In the comics she’s basically a villain forced to be a hero who only wants to solve things her way. With force or power. Who thought that was a good idea? Seriously??

I really hope Captain Marvel doesn't just swoop in and beat the shit out of thanos with no thought or ceremony like Superman and Steppenwolf in Justice League. Endgame should be heavily orientated around the avengers and the team and how each member must collaborate and contribute to defeating Thanos. Y'know kind of like how they did on titan in infinity war. Captain Marvel flying in and invalidating the team's efforts by just being so OP as to wreck Thanos in a few minutes even though he's SUPPOSED to be the most powerful being in the universe would really ruin the entire story the MCU has been building this whole time, as well as falling flat as a female empowerment message.
@thoranzalarvhazen42505 жыл бұрын
I keep telling people this because people keep saying this, but basically, there is literally nothing to worry about. It is LITERALLY stated in Robert Downy Jr's contract that his character /CAN NOT BE UPSTAGED BY ANY OTHER SUPER HERO DURING THE FINAL FIGHT WITH THANOS/. It's LITERALLY part of the legal agreement because he made them put that in there or else he wasn't going to sign on. It was established even before the script was finished. If they do something lame, and have this new hero come out of nowhere and steal the show from him, he can LITERALLY sue Disney because it's LITERALLY stated in the agreement that this cannot happen. Basically, we know beyond the shadow of a doubt that Iron Man gets the kill shot in some way, probably sacrificing himself in some way. It sounds really egotistical, but honestly at this point, having it any other way would be BAD WRITING through and through and there would be no way to get around that. Iron Man's character has lost so much, he has the most complicated character arc out of all of these other characters, this is HIS story more than any of theirs and HE absolutely is the KING of Marvel right now - his film literally kicked off the true MCU. All these other movies exist basically because of what HE started, and through out all these films, his loss is easily more real than any other characters. It would be just wrong to NOT have him be the center of it all in the end.

The question is, will it last? Thor's change came from Ragnarok. Not Infinity War, that was just continuing the Ragnarok version. The same with Iron Man being a continuation of Tony Starks evolution over the past 10 years. They definitely made Captain America & Thanos more interesting, but apparently Endgame is the Russos' last comic book film. After Endgame, these characters are gonna be in different hands. Just look at Spiderman, first he was under the Russos for Civil War, and he was great. Then he was under Jon Watts for Homecoming, which sucked. Then the Russos again for Infinity War which was also great. But now he's back under Jon Watts after Endgame. Honestly, I'd point out that while good representation can boost the quality of a movie, the emphasis should be on GOOD representation. Not good as in "perfectly inoffensive in every way," good as in "well-written, compelling characters." Giving me "representation" for diversity points without actual artistry comes off as insulting and DETRACTS from the quality of the film

5:30 This! This is a point I bring up in every conversation I have about the Marvel Universe. I argue that Wanda is a far better character than Carol. Wanda got her powers from being hooked up to Loki's Scepter which contained the Mind Stone. Carol was hit by a blast from the explosion of a spacecraft that powered by the Tesseract that housed the Space Stone. The advantage that Carol had was someone working with her to improve her control of her powers. Also, I want to see Scarlet Witch be the villain in a Marvel movie. She would be the perfect candidate. Lost her family because of Stark. Lost her brother because of Ultron, had to kill Vision to save the universe. Then, was forced to watch as Thanos brought Vision back to life, only to pull the Mind stone from his head. Then, salt in the wounds, Vision was one of the few people who wasn't brought back in Endgame. One day my essay on why Endgame is actually not great will be finished and posted...
@milesandrews67114 жыл бұрын
Honestly I hated how strong scarlet witch was really, because it makes no sense that she is stronger than people like thor, captain America and iron man who held off multi stone Thanos, or how she held off multi stone thanos despite having the power of only one stone But then again I can't expect marvel to understand anything about powerscaling

She isn't forgettable though. Marvel's shoving her in nearly everything now. And is making her more than what she every really was ; Tanking a penance stare becuase she is tired of people hating her, when she caused Civil War 2 and every other hero telling her off for her actions. She's arrogant, powerful at time egotistical (Shows through her facist approach during Civil War 2) and she gets away with it. Everybody loves her, she tells Tony that she is never going to ask for forgiveness for putting hin in a coma (Technically Tony died, and made a new body for himself and downloaded his mind into said body; And now he asks himself if he is still even considered "human", he asks an andriod if she thinks he still had a soul) then Tony begs her to join the Avenger. Dunno why Marvel loves her so much.

I think you nail it in the part about Wonder Woman - even as an adult male, Wonder Woman is someone I genuinely would aspire to be like because she is representative of truth, love, goodness, and bravery. She earns the right to be inspirational. Captain Marvel is simply a power trip fantasy - while she sacrifices a lot, it doesn't seem like much as the Kree seem like they aren't that fun to hang around and the audience never warmed up to their creepy Kree culture to begin with. The Supreme Intelligence and the power dampening device keys the audience in from the get-go that the Kree are evil, so it isn't really a surprise when she figures out that she's been lied to her entire life. Meanwhile, Diana gave up a great life and the people she loved in order to save some people she doesn't know who deserve their fate. Diana's sacrifice is so much more meaningful and it makes her vastly more inspirational as a result.
