"A green monkey ate my light bulb!" In my memory from when I first saw this, that lament was more pronounced, and I remember seeing the "green monkey" actually eating a light bulb. Maybe my young self imagined these things, and those imaginations replaced the memories. On second thought, my memory of the "green monkey" biting into a light bulb is so vivid that I think/wonder if that was originally in the movie when I first saw it, and the scene has since been removed. Perhaps more scenes with the chimpanzee have been removed. I cannot think of any safe way that the chimp could have the green coloration that we see.

This was a TV movie that was supposed to be a pilot for a series that never materialized, which explains why it takes place in 1979 (the boy says his parents died a year ago, and according to their gravestone they died in 1978), but was released theatrically in 1981 so the producers could recoup some of their money, and OMG do its TV movie origins show! Everything about it absolutely screams TV movie, from the generic music to the flat cinematography to the incredibly inane script to the bargain basement special effects. Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen anything so sappy, sophomoric, hackneyed, and devoid of understanding as to how the world actually works. We have not one, not two, but THREE comic relief characters (that's the legendary Doodles Weaver--who was in Hitchcock's "The Birds"--in an uncredited role as the assistant coach whose lightbulb gets eaten by a green space monkey at the end. I can't make this stuff up). The plot goes off the rails from the very start, as the government notifies local sheriff John Schuck (who was in the movie version of MASH) that a UFO has crashed near his town, so he can bring 300 yokels with guns in to search for the aliens. Yeah, there's some real tight security! Is this a Don Dohler movie? (The sheriff's idiot deputy is played by Stuart Pankin of HBO's Not Necessarily The News, who was also in Hangar 18, where he played a yokel who witnesses a flying saucer landing, so apparently he was pigeonholed for these kinds of roles). Why the government didn't just bring in their own people and cut the local sheriff out of the loop is anybody's guess. The aliens turn out to be a typical white American nuclear family, led by Chris Connelly, with a hot wife, a horny teenage daughter, and precocious adolescent son, making them every TV sitcom family ever, only with superpowers (who said this was written by talentless hacks?). Naturally, these powers include telekinesis, invisibility, mind control, healing, and anything else the script requires them to be able to do. Oh, and they also have a pet green chimpanzee which does nothing of any importance. They befriend the singing snowman from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and his grandson, who looks so much like the alien boy I could never tell them apart. Lots of tedious, pointless shenanigans ensue, which I won't elaborate on, and they're pursued by mean government guy Conrad, played by veteran character actor Joe Campanella, who never removes his hat and sunglasses, as if he's ashamed at being seen in this dreck. Conrad ruthlessly pursues the aliens, but for some reason never connects them to the owner of the RV in which he found the green space monkey (which was explained away as a pet chimp who spilled green paint on himself--seriously!), even after he finds a tuft of the green monkey's fur next to the blue jumpsuits that the super-intelligent aliens cleverly left behind in grandpa's house. As I suspect you can tell by now, this movie is extremely badly written. All the characters are idiots, and the plot is painfully predictable, contrived and mawkish. The sole clever moment is a joke involving the mascot of an insurance company. I won't give away the ending, since the title does that for me. I can't imagine why this didn't get picked up for a series. I guess TV executives actually do have some sense after all.

Doesn't say anywhere that they can communicate telepathically. The women can sense emotions, the boy communicates with animals that are nearby, and the man only gets an insight into Tommy's mind when he's healing him (i.e. in direct contact). The film never claims that they can communicate over distances with their minds, and we never see them doing it.
