When do you install kerdi band to the wall? The video doesn't show when but at the end of the video I noted it was installed?

Hi Verona. We show installing the KERDI-BAND on the wall at around 6:20, but you can also install it on the tray prior to installing the KERDI on the wall if you prefer. Either way is fine. There is no specific sequence required, as long as there is a 2" overlap everywhere. Hope that helps!

Thank you. One last question, can you install kerdi band over the kerdi wall board and sheetrock transition? I have a skim coat sheetrock transition from the kerdi shower wall.

What can be done if the curb is not level? It is dry on the thinset already, however, I have not put on the Kerdi band and corners yet. The curb is slightly slanted width wise, towards the shower pan (pointing towards the drain).

You actually want the top of the curb to slope just a little toward the inside of the shower, so you can install a little extra thin-set on the outside edge of the top of the curb when installing the tile to slightly slope the tile itself. That should do the trick!

@@schlutersystems1 thank you for the quick reply, one more question. When I was connecting the two curbs, I accidentally thin-set the cut sides together and the uncut side towards the walls. Will I see any issues down the road? Anything you can recommend?

Can I install the curb onto the shower pan, or just on the side. My shower pan fits perfectly inside the existing shower outling, and I would prefer not to cut it but instead put the curb on the top if I can.

Hi there ! It's best/easiest to cut the tray out and install the curb next to it. The shower tray being sloped, it won't be ideal to install the curb over it; it would also make your drain look off-centered. Hope that helps !

Not true. 🙂 You can use any Schluter modified thinset mortar or a an unmodified thinset by another brand. @@schlutersystems1 Really? This demonstration shows installation over plywood. I would think unmodified would get moisture wicked out of it by the plywood interfering with cure. Or am I backwards?

Hi! Is there a pitch or slope to the curbs? These look flat. Why or why not slope them towards the drain?

Hi Robbie, The curb is not sloped. This makes it easier to install the curb or curbs without having to worry about accidentally installing it with the slope going in the wrong direction. Our instructions state, "When setting tile on the curb, the surface must be sloped towards the shower drain." Hope this helps.

A little extra thin-set mortar under the tile at the outer edge of the curb will work 🙂

How much weight is this going to hold? If It were to be stepped on or have a heavy sliding door on it would it crumple? Should I fill the inside with something to add strength to it?

Hi there! The Schluter®-KERDI-BOARD-SC is made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam with a high compressive strength. After the tile is installed and grouted, the assembly will support all the loads typical of tiled showers. This can include glass doors or glass block walls. Although it is unlikely that someone will step on the curb, yes, it will hold that weight as well, once the assembly is completed. Hope this helps. 🙂

Hi there, the curb height can be raised, but there may be limitations on the maximum height dependent upon the building and/or plumbing code(s) in effect in your area. We recommend checking with your local inspector. Thanks!

hmm i bought a shower kit and it came with a gray foam curb not like the one that is in the video? is that ok? or is that something else?

For sure! We have updated our curbs to incorporate waterproofing (the orange one you see here). For instances where the curb is not inherently waterproof, it will need to be waterproofed using the included Kerdi waterproofing membrane and the seams sealed with Kerdi-Band. Hope this helps!

Hi there! It does not matter which layer of KERDI goes down first in order for a waterproof seal to be made. Shingle lapping of the KERDI membrane is not necessary.

How do you attach a shower door track to 'foam?!'

Hi There! In general, use of a track system that does not penetrate the waterproofing is preferred. However, we do have successful field experience with the installation of hinged glass doors over our Schluter®-Shower System. The track is fastened to the tile on the curb with the use of anchors and Schluter®-KERDI-FIX or equivalent sealant. Please contact Customer Support for complete instructions. Can you 45 the corner? The curb has a slight angle as it is…. Wouldn’t you want the corners 45’d??

Hi Colby! Yes, the curbs may be cut at 45 degrees to make the 90 degree connection. Either method to connect the corners will work (e.g., as shown in the video or the 45 deg cuts). For the 45 deg cuts, the waterproofing sequence will be different, so be sure to get the 2 inch overlap while doing your best to not create excessive overlap. Hope this helps!

Do you guys have any videos on building a neo angle curb? Also, my local Kerdi supplier suggested I can save money by building my own curb using various thicknesses of Kerdiboard and Kerdi Fix to join them. In my case two 2" Kerdi plus 1/2". Is that a sanctioned method by you guys?

Hi there, we don't have any videos on building a neo-angle curb specifically, but your supplier is definitely on to something! You can build your own custom KERDI-BOARD curb, for sure. Here's a video on building a custom bench (not a curb, I know) but it shows you how easy KERDI-BOARD is to work with. One thing that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is that this curb comes already tilted slightly, so that water naturally runs back into the shower. The thing is, it's not marked in any way and the instructions don't mention it. As-is, the installer has a 50/50 chance of getting it right, or very wrong. Yes, an installer who's on the ball will ensure it's tipped the right way, but the fact that it comes that way is something to be aware of. Also, this and other onl Schluter videos all stress using unmodified thinset. The irony is that they later came out with their "All-Set" morter, which negates their own advice, as it's modified, but can be used in either application.

Hey Kurt, The Schluter®-KERDI-BOARD-SC curb does not have a slope on it. It is flat on top and bottom. When setting tile on the curb, the tiled surface must be sloped towards the shower drain by adding a little extra thin-set under the outside edge of the tile. Our position on thin-set mortar use within our systems in general has not changed. We still warranty the use of unmodified thin-set mortar meeting ANSI A118.1 to install tile within our systems because we have confidence in the performance of this product category. This is based on the science of cement hydration and years of positive testing and field experience. Schluter Systems’ modified thin-set mortars have been specifically formulated to set and gain strength in a timeframe that fits typical installation practice, even when sandwiched between Schluter® membranes or boards and porcelain tile. The proportions of cement, water retention agents, polymers, and other components in the mixtures were balanced to ensure that extended dry times are not required. Developing our own setting materials has given us the ability to guarantee consistently positive results. And since we control the formulas, we can be sure no changes will be made that have a negative impact on setting times and strength gain in these environments. However, we have no control over the formulation of other manufacturers’ products, and therefore cannot guarantee consistently positive results with their modified thin-set mortars.
