I'm 45, 6'5 335 lbs. I've been diligently tracking my macros and caloric intake for 7 weeks at 2400 calories (roughly 20% carb, 45% protein, 35% fat of coach approved food). I've been in the gym 5 days a week and recently transitioned to 6 days a week on a push pull legs and i'm up to 30 minutes of cardio each day as well and pushing on that too. I'm following coaches advice and pushing myself to work harder every workout. I'm seeing significant strength gains and I'm losing inches but not a lot of weight (15lbs in 7 weeks). I was in very good shape 20 years ago, so I know how to do this. I just took a 20 year siesta. I was expecting a more significant weight loss, however. I don't buy that i'm packing on huge pounds of muscle, though generally they are much more pumped and larger than before. I worry about cutting more calories off of what already feels like a fairly large deficit.

Can’t gain that much lean muscle mass while losing weight or not on PED. You may also be not eating enough grams of protien or stimulating enough muscle tearing to promote growth. If you want to lose more, drop the calories and drop the cardio a bit because you’re body might not be able to keep up. 2 pounds of fat loss a weak is great. Slow and steady wins the race. Yup. I recall the calorie calculators being inaccurate for me as well. When I selected my stats (5'8", 133 pounds, male, 27 years old) and intense physical activity, it told me 3000 calories to maintain. However, right now, I'm eating roughly 4500-4600 calories just to maintain due to all the mma training, cycling, and endurance work I do. Issue is that it defines intense physical activity as 2+ hours of exercise daily. Hence, it would spit out the same number on me whether I do 2 hours, 3 hours, or even 6 hours of exercise per day, which makes no sense.

I find that many of these formulas set women very low with calories, the dreaded 1200 calories. I was eating that little when I was trying to get abs and felt terrible. I'm 5'2" and 107 lbs and was trying to get shredded. I would do a workout then take a nap afterwards. My progress just stopped even with working out 6 days a week (cardio and weights). I work with a coach now and am reverse dieting to speed up my metabolism. . I'm maintaining a stable weight on 1800 to 1900 calories and slowly pushing it to 2000 calories even with working out less (due to an injury). Metabolic adaptation is a real thing - it can slow down with too much restrictive dieting but also speed up by slowly increasing the calories (e.g. 50 to 100 calories/day and staying there for a week, maybe 2 to 3 weeks to see how your body reacts). Eric Trexler has some videos on metabolic adaptation based on research. MissFitandNerdy also has some good KZbin videos. If you're able to work with a coach or trainer, it can be helpful. Good luck!

I’ve been losing 1 lb a week like clockwork for 5 weeks when eating what my tracker says is 1100-1300 a day. According to my calculator though, I should be losing about 2 lbs a week. I’ve just started trusting the movement of the scale over the calorie calculator. Between the margin of error for TDEE, my own tracking of calories consumed (which is certainly not 100% accurate since I don’t track neurotically ) and the lies on nutrition labels which say they are lower than they are, I’m ok eating what my tracker says is only 1100-1300 because I can feel that it’s not actually that low. I’m not feeling weak or tired, and I’m rarely feeling hungry, though if I started feeling that way I would eat a bit more. I was plateaued for 3 months straight eating 1500-1700 a day according to the tracking and I never felt remotely hungry on that amount. In fact, I frequently caught myself eating food last minute at night because my tracker said I had 300-500 calls left for the day, even though I didn’t feel like eating. So, I just started eating what I felt like eating for about a week without tracking and then I calculated the calories at the end of the night and found that I actually felt more comfortable eating what my tracker said was about 1200 on average.

You need to move more!! My toddler eats more than you 😅
@CSWells-uq4jx3 жыл бұрын
@@odamh1016 I run 10 -15 miles a week, cycle 20 -30 miles, and weight train 5 days a week with 1-2 rest days a week were I just walk a couple miles depending on how I’m feeling. I’m a 5’5” 30 yr 147lb female. I do likely have a very low metabolism due too thyroid function seeing as doctors had to jumpstart my thyroid when I was born because it wasn’t working. My little brother had the same issue and my mom has a fully shut down thyroid and is medicated for it. So it’s possible it’s genetic. Haven’t actually had it tested recently though, and I should. However, my point was that, even though my tracker says I’m eating only 1100-1300 it’s probably way more than that considering how I feel on that amount and training like I do. Meaning, the tracker isn’t accurate and you can’t just take the rule about 1200 calories at face value for everyone. We don’t actually track our calories that well. I decreased slowly to that amount after tracking around 1500 for 3 full months without the scale moving so I can safely say that was about my maintenance . I’m not dropping weight over the safe recommend weekly amount, I try to avoid ever having my deficit show over 1000 in any given day because I’ve found that if it does I don’t feel good the next day. I’m not feeling weak or sick or tired so I know that this amount as I’m tracking it seems to be sufficient for me. If I ever do feel a little tried or just not up to par, I eat a little more for a day or two. I would not claim that it would be optional for anyone else just because it works for me.

Hey coach Greg, love your content. I was curious what you think about meal frequency, how much does eating 5 meals a day vs eating 3 meals containing the same amount of calories affect your physique?
@TheTheawesomeguy353 жыл бұрын
It’s ideal to eat 5 but it doesn’t make a huge difference, maybe like 1-3% if you’re talking about numbers. If you want to optimize then go for 5 meals a day but it’s not required at all; 90% of your gains will come from just eating right and training harder than last time. The rest is just icing on the cake
@TheTheawesomeguy353 жыл бұрын

This was a great video. I will say that having a higher TDEE can still make it easier to stay lean because you can fit more typical junk food in while still getting enough protein and volume to stay full. If you eat 2000 calories per day because you’re skinny and do 0 cardio, it’s going to be hard to ever have the calories for some drinks or pizza while still getting your body weight in protein etc. if you eat 3500 calories per day, hitting your nutritional needs while having room for more fun foods becomes more feasible. No, you don’t have less hunger, but being able to Enjoy your diet more makes staying lean easier.

Coach Greg's point of view and arguments are of course valid. But it's way too egocentric. Most people aren't - and probably will never be - as athletic, fit and muscular as Greg.They need a starting point to get their stuff going. Even a rough estimate is good enough to start this life long journey to a healthy body and mind. They just need to know - and that's why I agree with most of the video - that it is indeed only and estimate. It's essential for every individual to assess how accurate those calculators are and how far they're off. This is a process of gaining knowledge and experience with yourself and might take weeks or months. Once you know how far off an calculator is it can be a great tool if used correctly. It's the same for fitness watches which usually use the same or at least similar formulas. If you don't believe any of those numbers blindly and bade your diet and activities solely on those, you will be fine.

Now you should wear an Apple Watch for a few days and see how much it exaggerates calories burned. I know people who think their workout is ruined if they forget it at home.

I've wondered about my renpho scale's accuracy. It says I'm 13% bodyfat, but I don't believe it. Also, after long cardio sessions my renpho thinks I've magically lost 2-3 pounds of muscle. Rehydrate and eat something and step on the scale again, oh your lean mass you lost is back lol.

I have one too. After losing 40lbs of fat it indicated I only lost 2% body fat. (I know I didn’t lose a bunch of muscle bc I continued getting stronger in the gym all along). So, yea, they’re just guessing. 😞

@@gregdoucette Then, how am I supposed to eat in a deficit in order to lose weight?
@maiari79363 жыл бұрын
@@gregdoucette don't I need to eat about 500 calories less than my maintenance in order to lose weight?
You are comparing your stats as a accurate reflection for the majority of people. You are a professional bodybuilder and don’t represent the majority. I think I these online calculators are a great tool for most overweight people who are trying to improve their lifestyle. I appreciate your videos Coach Greg,

They're a good start, but as with most things you then have to modify based on reality. If youre gaining or losing weight then adjust the calories until you're going in the required direction.

Hey Coach, just had a quick question, I know you preach calories calories out. But I just watched the new vid from CBUM and he mentioned that he dropped his calories and raised his cardio and he was struggling to drop weight. Is it really all about calories? Why would he struggle to drop weight if he was eating less calories, what other factors are at play here as I have had the same issue as Chris. Any advise you have is greatly appreciated. Keep up the good content.

Despite what Greg and others say, a calorie is not exactly a calorie and quality of the food does matter. Even if his calorie counting is perfect, eating poor quality (processed, high sugar, low fiber) food will make anyone tired and lethargic, lowering overall calorie expenditure while also increasing cravings and making diet adherence more difficult. Not sure about CBUM specifically but that's been my experience and that of others as well, and may be one of a possible number of factors at play

Well that's because he is to a point where his body fat is so low that he must reduce his calories even more, more cardio. To be stage ready, along the way you'll face many setbacks, one of them reaching a plateau where you find difficult to lose weight, because the calories are so low, so you have to reduce them even lower, but ofc it's difficult once you already eat less than you have to.

Coach Greg probably won’t answer this so I’ll take a crack at it- when you’re as lean as Mr. Olympia your body can slow your metabolism down because you’re starving yourself. 99% of us won’t have to worry about it but if you’re well into the single digit body fat %s it gets much harder to keep losing weight.

So how do you figure out your maintenance? Just by eating, tracking and seeing if you’re going up down or staying the same? There’s no other way?
