Scizor VS Heracross Solo Challenge - Pokémon FireRed

Challenge Rules:
- I can only use my starter in battle.
- No items in trainer battles except held items.
- No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
- Accuracy moves aren’t explicitly banned but will be avoided.
- I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

I love how Pinsir started out being the rival to Scyther and then became the rival to Heracross, but is now just completely forgotten outside of its mega. They should've just made them a bug trio or something instead of just leaving Pinsir in the dust

A part of me wonders if Heracross wouldn't have performed better with HP Rock as well. Like it looked like Rock Slide was his main move for a not insignificant number of fights and every miss adding damage and time. But still awesome video.

I feel like I let Heracross down in this video. Typically, Rock Slide vs HP Rock doesn't make a huge difference in completipn time as I need to add time to hunt TM10, and catch additional Meowths. The 100% accuracy would be way nicer though

Fantastic race, and from the start i could not for the life of me predict who would come out ahead, i knew Heracross had better coverage and significantly faster, but also that Scizor the overall superior typing and swords dance by level-up. Was really, really close in the end, but i guess the difference was that Scizor just leveled up faster. Just a quick question, i know you don't like to use Hidden power until you have to, but you think perhaps heracross could have gotten a better time with HP ghost for Agatha, and also, Scizor being rather slow, you think it could have utilized agility at some point?

I feel my routing with Heracross in the second playthrough was a bit lacking as well, which could have led to a closer time between the two. Scizor with access to Reversal to carry through until Swords Dance was a force though. I feel like having our set up move stick as SD, with the Jolly nature allowed us to surpass that speed threshold enough times, with a little help from Candies now and then. Trading Speed set up for Atk I feel that we would be a lot more risk in the leagues as we would no longer be one shotting, taking more turns, and potentially more damage/status conditions. I can't know for sure without testing! Maybe there's an angle I'm not seeing.

Awesome run! It was tough to pick one to root for as both are my favorite Bug Types but I had a feeling that earlier access to Swords Dance would give Scizor the edge. I do wonder if the Venusaur team would be a harder challenge since two intimidate users would make setting up a bit more difficult and Arcanine isn't too different from Charizard stat wise. I know I requested both Ursaring and Donphan and I just had the thought of them being a vs video since they were both version exclusives in their debut games and have the same base stat total, same for Skarmory vs Mantine, Solrock vs Lunatone, or Huntail vs Gorebyss

Thank you! I enjoyed running both of these Pokémon so much! That early access to SD changed the trajectory of Scizor's game. Not as much as Armaldo mind you... Yes, I have the version exclusive VS ideas on the list :) There are so many different ways to pit them against each other! Plus, in the next few months I do need to focus on solo runs a bit more than the VS style - I'll have a bunch upcoming in a few months but it's another mini-series.

That was an exceptional versus video, and the gym intros are better than what you used to do. 😮 Up until this video, I'd never thought that how similar Seizor and Heracross can be, and until the very end I couldn't know which one was going to take the win.😊 I love both of these bug types quite a lot,so I'm glad that they got some good results. That charizard was pretty scary for both competitors to face ,so much so that you had no other choice but one shot it, I'm not sure if both of them could handle it without using a substitute 🤔. I guess that's how valuable substitute is. So much so that I think that's the reason why the game developers were making it a tutor move and not a tm.😊 I can't wait to see what your next run will be like.😊

That Charizard was terrible! I half wonder how much things would change had I gone for say.. the Bulbasaur team instead :P Substitute is wicked strong! Loved the Sub-song. And the time comparison looked great. But I love Bug types, so a fun video. Poor Scizor was getting really punished by that Fire Weakness, unlike Heracross' Flying which didn't really seem to be an issue. I do wonder how Scizor could have played with a build more focused on Attack but with Agility over SD. Of course Intimidate would absolutely suck, but being able to invest more into strength and using Agility would be an interesting comparison, although probably not worth it.

There are definitely some tweaks to make to the time comparison graph - it didn't land quite the way I wanted. I'm glad you enjoyed it nonetheless! I was in an almost constant state of questioning with these two. I feel like Scizor I made the right choice, but Heracross I did not. Swords Dance is just so darn strong :)

They indicate Pokémon that ran using my VS rules, which mirror my normal rules, but also include starting fully evolved (where applicable) and with the option of a single egg move. In this video, Scizor used Reversal, and Heracross Bide as egg moves. Otherwise, that Brock split would have looked MUCH different :)

In my VS runs I start with the Pokémon fully evolved (where applicable), with the option of 1 egg move. Scizor took Reversal while Hera took Flail maybe? I remember them all being awful for Heracross. I hope that clears it up :)

@@Eggsceptional Posted yesterday by mistake. I was only half way through watching the video but I was going to bed and not thinking. I'm finishing it off now. Not sure about your Scizor's rare candy strategy. 5 before rival five (and then grind cycling road, fighting dojo koga etc). I reckon you could have picked another level or two up by reversing the order. I'm not sure if Jolly was the right decision for Heracross. Speed didn't hold Heracross up as much with base 85 speed. Similarily to Scizor I'm not sure that 4 rare candies before rival five and grinding was wise.

@@naraiceylobWith the Rare Candies I was more focused on defeating the Rival asap to clear Silph and not have to backtrack. That was the thought anyway. For Scizor I was mostly hunting EVs that gave decent XP. I 100% agree that the way I played Jolly Heracross did not land properly. I feel I should have stuck with Adamant and the strategy I used, or if going for Jolly leaned more heavily into Guts. My Heracross run left me.. unsatisfied.

It's the artwork that Bulbapedia uses from Let's Go, so I'm pretty sure it is! I haven't played Let's Go myself. It's a cool piece, quite different from the rest.

Eggcellent Sir, as always truly Eggcellent. I think the 1st runs went about as well as they could of. 1st it was nice to see a pair of Pokemon that weren't bothered by poison, I had forgotten about Guts on Heracross, very handy, surprised you didn't use it more, but as we saw it didn't need it really, Heracross is a beast, decently bulky for a bug and I maintain bulk up is perfect for it due to its flying weakness, bulk at least adds defense. that flying weakness was rough though, Aerial Ace in the R2 league was rough, but we both knew that was coming. the egg moves were a bit disappointing on it though, a single fighting move earlier would of been such a game changer for it, but oh well it ran beautifully regardless. Scizor did beautiful, but that lack of speed is again rough, Jolly nature was a great choice for the 2nd playthrough. it is amazing how Scizor and Scyther compare despite having the same base stat total, just spread differently and a single type difference, steel is so good defensively, but that fire weakness is so bad, I am surprised you got though Blaine as quickly as you did, but I am deeply impressed. I am surprised Scizor won the VS, I was convinced it would be walled by fire types for too much of the run and that Heracross would just cleave through, maybe if Brock was quicker, it would of got the win. I can't think of a way either could of done better or faster, except maybe HP of course, but as you said, its so random to get that can't be helped and trying to get it might of taken longer than the time it might save you. you did good with the big bugs and I look forward to more of them.

Guts might have made a more prevalent appearance on the second run using Jolly. This was my first run where I felt my second playthrough routing didn't work out well for the Pokémon. That second run just felt... off. Scizor did do beautifully, exactly like Scyther did, but with better typing despite the Fire weakeness. There are far less threatening Fire Pokemon than Rock in those games! I fully expected a mirror of Scyther Vs Pinsir but with better typing and it pretty much ended up being that. Lots of fun! Just those Gen 2 upgrades :)

@@Eggsceptional yeah that 2nd play through with Heracross was a shame, I am convinced Heracross could do better than Scizor, but finding a way to achieve that is a different matter, making more use of guts maybe, I would of kept Bulk Up instead of swords dance as well, the extra defense is always good on something weak to so many physical types, maybe HP of course, but as we saw with Scizor getting it in the 1st place is a challenge in its self. the comparison to the Gen 1 bugs is no surprise, I think the designers saw the Gen 1 bugs and thought, these are good, lets make them better and did just that. I admit I low key thought for many years that Heracross evolved from Pinsir, it would of fit considering the upgrades and similarities Heracross has to Pinsir. I am sure also Pinsir could do better in a run as it has a great moveset and arguably a better typing, mono bug has less weaknesses and no 4x weaknesses after all I'll tell you something cool, in my sandstorm team run right now, I just did an epic cubone hunt, I caught 24 hoping for good natures, IV's and Thick Club. I got 2 of each of all 3 of those and have an epic Marowak now. a thought occurred during this, would you feel about light ball surfing Pikachu vs thick club swords dance cubone?

@@jptheflipper3825 Yeah I feel like if I reverted to the Adamant Heracross with better grinding it would have gone better. Or leaned harder into Guts with he Jolly one. Either way, I'm not 100% satisfied with that Hera run. The Gen 2 Bugs really do feel like the evolution of the Gen 1 bipedal Bugs. I mean.. one literally is but you know what I mean. I love that they even ran very similarly to the originals, despite having new sticking points. Hmmm that would be an interesting one. Set up VS coverage. And LB vs Club. I'm writing that one on the list too that's a super cool idea. Thank you!

@@Eggsceptional maybe a special 3rd run with Heracross to try and give it a better run using what you learned from the 1st 2 runs. I've run several Pokemon many times and find them do slightly better each time, Butterfree for example, 1st run was standard, no HP, no EV training, nothing like that and needed 100 for R2, 2nd run, more EV's a HP that compliments its weaknesses and a touch of routing for good measure, 3rd run, same again, but better and some testing for other HP's and EV routing, 3rd times the charm and all that lol. the gen 2 big bugs are certainly improvements over the originals, although I can never resist the Gen 1's, a shame gen 3 only gave us the one new one and it was a fossil, but we know already how epic Armaldo is, but not because it is a bug. I find it interesting that of the 4 big bugs of Gen 1 and 2, only Pinsir doesn't have the 4x weakness, all the others do and each has a different 4x weakness, I wonder if that was by design to keep them in check. I had a feeling you'd like that, although I will say now Cubone will not be an easy start as its starting moveset is leer and tail whip and I think it needs level 7 for its 1st attacking move, Pikachu will do well in the early game, but cubone will catch up quickly it will be a fun run to see and to try

@@jptheflipper3825 Combining threads. That's a fair point with the army of Meowths. I'm wondering about my team builds about how big of teams I should make, concession for HM users or if I have to include them in my team. All kinds of things. Even skipping training a Pokémon until later to properly EV train it with the Macho Brace. Who knows!? Absolutely! In team builds I won't be dealing with Intimidates, Confusion, or a whole bunch of those extra nasty little things that always hold back a solo Pokémon. It will be wonderful.... As long as we have enough Speed Charizard CAN be an issue that is more easily mitigated. I do allow Hidden Power after all and even with a lower Atk stat 4x HP Rock is still a big deal. Absolutely with RSE. I think I like the Nuzlocke style of breaking in a new game as I can really take time to research items, nearby Pokémon, all of that. It really allows me to learn the game. I agree that getting in additional runs would be a fun thing to do. I'm struggling with managing my time enough doing two runs per Pokémon sometimes though! I'm hoping that my overall play is improving over time, so I'll have less instances like this where I feel like a third run would be in order. I can't guess at the design that GameFreak was going for but I do love to speculate and find weird little points like that. Pinsir, I tihnk , still felt like the most solid of the 4, despite being the slowest. Those 4x weaknesses can be nasty. I think so too! I do love the idea. It's now just a matter of figuring out when to run it, and my schedule is packed until at least the New Year. Let's just hope I can produce it all!

Meowth has the Ability Pickup. It has a 10% chance to pick up a random item after a battle. In FireRed it's a static loot table, mostly berries, but with a 5% chance for things like Nuggets, Rare Candies, PP Ups, and TM10 Hidden Power. This is the only way to get Hidden Power in FireRed without help from another game. Hope that clears it up!

What a fantastic video! I knew as soon as you gave Scizor Adamant you were in for trouble, as Scizor only benefits from it with STAB priority Bullet Punch, a move that doesn't happen to be in Gen 3. Technician also makes it THAT much better, but THAT isn't until Gen 5. I also completely forgot that Heracross doesn't learn Aerial Ace in Gen 3 and his egg move pool was complete trash, though I think the Adamant nature was actually better for it, with the extra grinding happening and having better levels for speed ranges than before, I think it would have made more difficult battles better. Either way, this video was AMAZING to watch, and I'm proud of both bugs. It's just a shame that my bug queen Volcarona isn't until Gen 5, I would love for her to absolutely DEMOLISH this generation.

Thank you! I agree with what you said particularly around Heracross. This was the first run that I've done where I felt my second playthrough routing almost hurt as much as it helped. Adamant was better for Heracross, no doubt. I'll break into Gen 4 eventually, but Gen 5+ may be waiting a bit longer :)

I've been limited by hardwate. My decade old computer can't handle the software for live updating stats/moveset, and adding it in post would increase my production time significantly. I have plans to implement this, but I need to upgrade my computer by like.. 9 generations I think on the processor alone?

Regarding thinking bug was super effective against Gengar at 45:00 bg was uwas super-effective agianst poison in gen 1.

So... without deep diving into a bunch of statistics math that I mostly forget... Meowth has a 10% chance to Pickup and item at the end of a battle. That item is rolled on a static table, on which TM10 has a 5% chance of appearing. So each individual Meowth has a 0.05% chance to pick it up every battle. Sometimes I roll with up to 4 Meowths, so a 0.2% chance per battle to find it, roughly speaking. I think I got that right!

I'm not sure how I feel about this run. On the one hand, I expected scissor to win from the beginning (growth rate makes such a huge difference). On the other hand I imagine that mistake at Blaine had to cost at least a minute. I'm sure that probably still wasn't enough to flip it in heracross favor but it just doesn't quite sit right with me. Either way I still enjoyed the run and thank you for it.

I agree with you that Heracross run didn't sit with me. I feel like in going Jolly I should have leaned more into Guts, but the Adamant run was better suited to Heracross. I think this was the first time I felt my routing made no improvement, possibly hindering him slightly. Thank you for yhe feedback!

You should make the Zangoose run a vs with Sandslash, since Arbok and Sandslash are a version exclusive pair, and Sandslash and Zangoose don't look that dissimilar

Typically it does, but Guts prevents the typical stat loss. Quick Feet works similarly with Paralysis leaving your speed intact, but still with the 25% chance to not move.

personally id say heracross overall is the better mon in gen 3... better offensive typing which is better for playthoughs... better movepool... and it doesnt get swords dance by level up but does get it eventually...

You are using way to much substitute and stuff. I watched nearly every video by now… moves like substitute and doubelteam should be completely banned … just on Level 100 maybe. You can win every battle with that with decent rng. Even perfect ivs are close to unfair. That’s unrealistic. I would rather use 0 ivs then perfect. First it’s more challenging and 2nd you see what the Pokémon is really capable of. So the time every Pokémon can get. Your time no player can achieve. Make it harder to yourself it makes watching the videos more fun at least for me. Think about it … in a normal playthrough you will get no perfect Pokémon. If you show us the time with the worst Pokémon for example gengar possible every gengar should get this time. And we as the viewers have the most of this information. And it’s way more challenging so more interesting. I would do a challenge this way And if you don’t want to do that pls at least without evasion strats and substitute even this alone I would do it this way. I would ban boost moves completely and use them just as the last way to do but substitute and evasion is the worst. And you are combining evasion substitute and boost moves. That’s really boring to be honest. I like the rest of your „challenges“ but this type of strats are really boring :/

I don't ban any moves in my runs. I just don't like Double Team that's why I don't use it. I've used it in a single run, Politoed's first playthrough because I hamstrung myself earlier in the game. I've illustrated a few times that Substitute, though powerful, is not a cure all. In my recent Abra line video for instance Substitute was completely useless. I've also been using it only as a last resort in my first playthroughs because I do recognize how much I use it. Then, if it's still the better option after testing other theories I will 100% pick Sub strats for the second playthrough. The metric that I place the most weight on is real time completion. Why would I detract from what a Pokémon is capable of? These videos are more about what's theoretically possible than difficulty. The Round 2 league is plenty difficult alone. Getting perfect IVs via breeding is grindy, but possible. I feel that adding a ton of these restrictions would ruin everything I enjoy about doing these runs. I enjoy things that challenge my brain, not my patience. I'm not here for the nittiest grittiest challenges out there. I'm here to showcase my experience playing the game, and maybe make somebody's day better along the way. I created this channel out of love for Pokémon, and for the creative outlet it allows me. To me these games are all about fun. Adding arbitrary difficulty for the sake of difficulty is not how I've ever played them. If I'm not having fun then I feel it's no longer worth my time. Besides... Sub strats best strats :) I appreciate the feedback. Thank you!
