I had a German shepherd/Rough Collie mix that looked exactly like one I seen on your website. She lived to be 14 1/2 . Gone almost 3 years now but I still miss her every single day 😢

Having owned Rough Collies and as a breeder of Scotch Collies, I really enjoyed this video! It’s pretty accurate, but I would like to add that even today’s Scotch Collies can make great family pets. They key is to be clear about what you’re looking for and to find a breeder who understands your needs. I also enjoyed seeing familiar faces of dogs that are in our pedigrees. What a treat to find these charming, versatile dogs being recognized for their wonderful character. Thank you!

I love the idea of the rough collie, but I absolutely HATE how over-abundant their coats are, they look WAYY too fluffy and like they can barely move!! Don't understand why people breed the dog to such extremes/admire big coats. The Scotch Collie just feels like a far healthier/better-looking dog, with a coat that's not gonna take several hours to maintain lmao. Sadly I don't think there's any breeders of the Scotch in the UK though, I've certainly never found one 😔

Just saw this video (I have been very ill since October, now getting better.) I will be binge watching all of your videos in the next couple of weeks. I LOVE the information you give on ALL breeds. But, as you know my heart belongs to collies especially the rough.

Thank you for this well put together and detailed video. I have a one and a half year old Scotch collie and she is an amazingly smart and beautiful girl! Today we had just adopted a rough collie girl she's a 5 month old pup that was in need of a home ,so now we have both!😁 The puppy (rough collie) is the same size in height and already weighs more than my Scotch Collie!

People here are not getting it and just being plain rude, I love both the Scotch and the Rough collie but each dogs serves its own purpose, the Scotch is a working farm dog and I'm glad people are working hard to revive this wonderful breed but the Rough is much calmer and gentle and the most wonderful companion, I love my Rough collie she is my hiking buddy and she is super smart but doesnt have the extreme work drive that a farmer would need in a farm dog. respect the different breeds for what they are and their purpose.
@rosewynfarm3 жыл бұрын
We have both. The Scotch makes a wonderful family dog, but not universally. Like with all pups, you have to make the right match between puppy and people.

We have an English Shepherd puppy who is now 8-1/2 months old. He seems like a strong cross between an ES and a Scotch Collie. He is already 58 pounds and not overweight. He has a stronger collie look, and his nose is slightly longer than other ES dogs, but his face and nose are somewhat wide. His nose is definitely not long or pointy enough to compare to a Rough Collie. His look is very old-fashioned, like I have seen him before on greeting cards and old ads. When I saw the old photo of the biscuit ad in your video, I realized how much Scotch Collie my ES likely has. He is a shaded sable with some wavy hair, especially along his back. His tail is full and somewhat fluffy, and he is muscular. His mane and ruff are filling in and getting fuller. I love that he he may have Scotch Collie in him as I love the look of some of those dogs in this breed. He is exactly what I wanted when I decided I wanted an ES. He is not dainty like some ES males can be. He is rugged and looks like he should be out on the highlands or the plains herding and keeping a cowboy company. And what a fast runner, nice and linear and quick and strong. He is an excellent dog and we couldn't love him more.

I have a 3/4 Aussie 1/4 Sheltie who is a shaded sable . His hood continues to get darker as he gets older . He looks incredibly like these scotch collies and I’ve actually had rough collie owners ask me if he is an old time farm collie . I’ve noticed he is incredibly similar looking to English shepherds as well . Thanks for clearing up what am old time farm collie is . I think I love them 😊.

I've read in several 'Collie' books that - historically - the rough coated Collies ( like Lassie ) were used to herd the animals actually still on the farm, and the smooth coated Collies were used to drive them to market. Are the 'Scotch Collies' just really descended from smooth coated Collies ( they 'bred out' that longer coat) - with their coats being the only real main difference, all else - intelligence, temperament, etc. - being equal ? It's very confusing since I've heard them call ( rough coated /smooth coated Collies) ' Scotch Collies'. I assumed it was just to differentiate them from 'Border Collies' - yet another 'breed' of Collies ?!
@harpgal99502 жыл бұрын
I have one of each. The little Scotch girl is still a pup, but she is very smart, very attentive and sweet. My rough boy is almost two years and has a beautiful, gentle temperament. Collies are the best! I believe the rough came about by introducing the borzoi into farm collie lines. Hence, the long pointy nose.

That accent is different from any I've ever heard before, what is it? Also, I'm looking for a dog breed that is good for herding, but also a protective family dog. I've been wondering if rough collies have lost their herding instincts. They appear to be very laid back...great for our family, but...I'm wanting them to herd goats. Since they are easily trained, should we just do that, or would the scotch collie be a good option? And where would I find one. I've never heard of them until I came across this video as I was trying to compare rough collies with border collies.
@Rocadog3 жыл бұрын
I am from Czech republic. Sure, Rough Collies can still be trained to be great herding dogs. Scotch Collies are very hard to find, if you are from US, it would be almost impossible i guess. You can check out Australian Cattle Dog, Bearded Collie, Border Collie, Berger Picard or Puli.. There is a lot of good herding dog breeds.

I think that the Rough Collie is not really messed up, i believe they are great dogs, there are many other breeds that suffer a lot more from the breeding :) But i got your point.

Smooth Collies are stunning. Shame that they are a dying breed. There aren't many breeders left who breed these wonderful dogs. Think there are a couple of breeders in the UK who still breed them. I will try and get one to keep my Japanese Akita company.

@Klara Bergman. Absolutely, and another breed, the Afghan hound. As with the show collies it is all about looks . Show dog Afghan's fur is alot longer than the working breed and have a much softer temperament. Alot of people also don't know that they were were also used as guardian dogs and some pet Afghan's still retain this ability to guard. The show ring ruins alot of breeds.
