If you want thick and beefy quads, lunges are an amazing exercise to add to your leg day! But because you're taking an "actual step" forward with weight, the chances of stepping incorrectly and placing strain on your lower back and knees is very high. But once mastered, the dumbbell or barbell lunge will become one of your favorite leg day exercises! *Program Selector Tool!- Get The Right Program For You! - **muscularstrength.com/Program-Finder*

Sorry that I keep asking, but I keep switching up my routine to make it better. This is what I currently have, and I hope that the shrugs and lateral raises on my upper FSU’s don’t ruin the lower days. If this is a good program, I’ll run it as a novice for aesthetics. What do you think? Thanks Scott!! Lower 1: Squat 3x5 RDL 3x8 Quad curl 3x12 Calf press 3x8 Shrug 3x12 Upper 1: Bench 3x5 Barbell row 3x10 OHP 3x8 Face pull 3x12 Skull crusher 3x10 Lower 2: Deadlift 3x5 Lunge 3x8 Ham curl 3x12 Calf raise 3x12 Lateral raise 3x12 Upper 2: Pendlay row 3x5 Incline bench 3x10 Chin up 3x8 Chest fly 3x12 Barbell curl 3x10

andre lamarque I wouldn’t put shrugs with lower. Also if you keep changing your program your muscles will never get used to the slow progressive overload your giving them and they won’t really grow. Stick with the same program until it stops working for you

Great video as always Scott. I did the 1st workout of your 2x per week chest workout yesterday for 1st time in 6 months. When I did this before I couldn't get thru all 45 reps of the pec blast finisher with 25lb dumbbells. Yesterday I got thru all 45 reps with 30lb dumbbells with a few reps left in me! Also I pyramided up to 80lb dumbbells for my last set of 6 reps of flat. The gains felt good. Btw my chest has never been as sore as it is today and I finally have a good mind muscle connection where the dumbbell pullovers lit up my upper chest. Thanks for the great content!

It has to do with what the front leg is doing. The weight is on the muscle the whole time during a reverse lunge and easier to control, less chance of bad form and using the back leg to do the work. I found doing front stepping lunges were working my back leg too much and struggled with balance more! This might be because of my own problems and may not be an issue for others though and definitely hate doing them! I know it's something I am stubborn at and need to do more. Thanks for doing this video Scott!

Scott! I have a question about squatting and deadlifting, basically, theres alot of people saying you cannot deadlift and squat on the same day, for several reasons. One says it's too much strain on the lower back, the other says it's too much volume for the legs, then theres also people saying that you should alternate between heavy squat and heavy deadlift days doing high volume on the others, then theres people you should do deadlifts on back days, so i kind of wanna ask you if it is smart to do them the same day without any danger for the lower back or some other detrimental effect? Side note 1: i Deadlift sumo because i have freakishly long legs, so less strain on lower back. side note 2: i generally avoid exercises that work the lower back too much in fear of injuring it. side note 3: i am doing push/pull/legs so i have atleast 2 days of recovery , and i am used to high volume.

Hey Scott, great tips and have been making a couple of these mistakes so will correct them. One thing, on the twisting lunges is it important to only twist to one side? Or could you twist to both sides? Also, I sometimes lean forward when lunging (sprinter lunges or something? from an Athlean X vid) would you consider these worthwhile or do they put lower back at risk?

Great content as always. 👍 What shoes would you recommend for leg training? Would you take multiple trainers with you to the gym so you have squat shoes, then change into flat shoes for deadlifts, then something else for lunges/plyometric exercises? Personally I need a bit more ankle support for my lunges and something which will absorb the impact to save my knees. But I do appreciate the lunge. It's a really good compound movement and I think it's one of the best exercises for targeting the glutes alongside the quads. What's not to love?!
