@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon hypothesis hitmonlee wins by a ton actually Unless Agatha Lance are that massive of a brick wall Hitmonchan moveset is worse than hitmonlee n I'm concerned about hitmonchan losing the speed battle with more pokemon like say gengar or final rivals alakazam or ninetales It will also one shot alot less than hitmonlee

To clarify on Counter: Yes, he said if you were hit by a water move, it would just miss. It did that every generation afterwards, and that's why they made "Mirror Coat" to cover the special moves. But to clarify for those who thought this, it would also miss if Ground, Flying, Rock, Bug, and Poison moves were used too. So a better example could have been used, but now hopefully people see how limited Counter really is on Gen 1
@jordanthejq12
@jordanthejq12 2 жыл бұрын
And yet even this limited iteration of Counter sees legit use in competitive play (shout-out to Counter Chansey). It turns out that, especially in a game with such limited movepools, being able to clap the most common attacking type in the game (including Tauros and Snorlax, two of RBY OU's "Big Four') is a pretty useful trait.
@bitterzombie
@bitterzombie 2 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, in RBY when the opponent hits themselves in confusion, it counts as a normal-type damage dealing attack. So counter, which always goes second, will follow it up by inflicting double that damage on the foe, sorta like the move Assurance that came about later. Its still quite limited as a combo, only Gengar and Magmar can learn confuse ray and counter, and only lickitung can learn supersonic & counter. But it was still quite a surprise when I discovered it on my "passive attacks only" playthrough. And it made gengar pretty viable in that context, as confusion damage was the only solid way to hit poison/grass types, and counter was the only damaging move I could use other than bide. It was still hit or miss, but really made confusion into a more potent status affliction for that run.
@Alienldr
@Alienldr 2 жыл бұрын
@@jordanthejq12 Agreed. Counter is limited, but when all physical types have limited moves (fighting only had a few. rock had rock throw and rock slide only. Bug was leech life, twineedle and pinmissle. Flying was peck, drill peck, and sky attack. Ground was dig and earthquake)... normal was the one with all the physical moves anyway. Unfortunately in competitive, Earthquake is everywhere. If Counter could deal with that one move, then most people wouldn't care about the limited usage.
@InsanityForce
@InsanityForce 2 жыл бұрын
The weirdest use I know is Counter on Gengar. It lets you counter Explosion if you just lost another pokemon to it and the oponnent switchs out instead of using a move... It's mentioned on Gengar's page on Smogon.

@@Hyperencrpted12345 I am surprised that GameFreak didn't give Hitmonchan an ability to turn all moves it can learn into Physical moves instead of Special moves, that would have made his elemental punches a tad bit more useful a generation before the Physical/Special split.

01:40:00 To be honest, i think that using the average between real and game time doesn't make much sense. The purpose of GT is to evaluate how the pokemon would perform in ideal conditions, where the player makes no mistakes and have good RNG, and RT evaluates how the pokemon would perform in a speedrun, considering the consistency of each fight. Those are different things with different meanings, it makes no sense to use their average as a metric. Also, the RT itself is like a combination between GT and n⁰ of resets, there is no need to mix them.

This is the first video I've seen of yours. I can't tell if there's an intentionality with this coming out on April Fool's, but either way, I love the production of this video and what I assume comes in your other videos. Very well used and well made layout of timer, base stats & current stats, movepool and current moveset, and reset counter. Doing split evolution pairs in gen 2 like Politoad vs Poliwrath, Slowbro vs Slowking(even though the differences in them are the Defense and Sp Def stats), obviously the 3 hitmons, Vileplume vs Bellossom, and the Umbreon vs Espeon or even all 5 which would be insane but interesting to see who would beat Crystal better.

Soooo, all of hitmonlee’s stats are superior or even with hitmonchan’s (except defence) actually starts off with a stab move, and a stat boosting move. While hitmonchan’s advantage is it gets greater elemental coverage, which,sadly for it, in this gen utilises it’s lowly special stat of 35! This doesn’t bode well for hitmonchan’s lol! I have started doing my own testing after watching the video and while I am admittedly not as proficient in certain aspects of the game I have seen some interesting results of my testing so far. Namely that the elemental punches are situationally useful and make certain areas faster and more consistent if planned properly. One big thing I did different is buying three Calcium instead of the Protein and Carbos that Scott did. I also didn't do Pokemon Tower til after Erika, instead fighting a few extra trainers along the way. By doing this Fire Punch was 2-3 shotting the Tangela without setup while still 2 shotting the following Weepinbell and Gloom. In addition this allowed me when I got to Pokemon Tower to 2 shot all the ghosts without Seismic Toss which gave me a bit more flexibility in my moveset. And as Scott found in his subsequent playthroughs Ice Punch is a consistent two hit against Rival Five's Sandslash when even at a higher level Body Slam is not a consistent two shot. It also makes Giovanni's Rhyhorn a one shot which was not shown in the video. I am hoping to continue testing and work on improving my ability to do the small things faster to see if I can improve on Scott's final time for Hitmonchan. While I know I won't be able to get it to be as fast as Hitmonlee was I can see it being at least closer in time with what I have been doing.

On the video that I commented and asked for the Hitmons' vs and you said that I would see why I kept wondering the motive ever since and was eager to watch it and LOL you were right, the first playthrough was almost walk in the park for lee while chan struggled a lot on the early game and it showed for the rest of the game. I knew Hitmonlee was a beast, oddly enough I fell in love with it playing pokémon sword because we can capture a Tyrogue early on and I evolved my into a "Lee" and after captured a digglet and the duo lee and dugtrio carried the whole game like a breeze. High Jump Kick has a tremendous 130 power on newer games making it steamroll the game. But never expected that his counterpart would be so less powerful (at least on gen 1). I'm a gen 1 fan and usually on newer games prefer to use them. Sorry for the long comment, I got carried away with excitement. Thanks a lot for the great content, you're the best pokémon youtuber!

I've loved Hitmonchan since I was a kid and he's literally never once been good. Such a shame and a tragedy.

Dude, you're sleeping on Chan if you say "he's literally never been good." Sure, in the early gens (pre-special split), he wasn't good. But once Hitmonchan gained access to Sky Uppercut, the elemental punches became physical, and it got the ability Iron Fist, it became pretty good. It'll never see consistent use (if any use) in the upper tiers of competitive play, but it's got a few niches in NU, RU, and even UU. Imagine leading with Ninjask (with Focus Sash), using Swords Dance turn 1 (getting a speed increase as well from speed boost), then, if the opponent attacked and did more than half-HP damage to Ninjask, use protect to get another speed boost, then baton pass that +2 in Atk and Spd to a Hitmonchan with Iron Fist, Mach Punch, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, and Thunder Punch. That's quite easy to set up and Chan is definitely capable of sweeping then, especially if it has good IVs and a good EV spread/beneficial nature. I've lost count of how many times I've swept an opponent's team by doing just that. Bear in mind though, that if Chan doesn't have the iron Fist ability, you might want to swap out one of the elemental punches for Sky Uppercut (or in later gens Close Combat) instead for the extra power and STAB (preferably drop Fire Punch, as it's the most expendable of the three elemental punches).

Hey Scott! Been enjoying the videos as always. I’m glad to see you go back to the longer approach. I also love seeing your adjustments and progression across a few playthroughs. Can’t wait to watch what’s next but also hope you make time to take some breaks and don’t burn yourself out!

Random fact because of how confusion mechanics work Hitmonlee is the gen1 pokemon that will cause the most damage to its self if it hits its self in confusion.
