If this was Red or Blue I think Alakazam would take it easy, but in this case, it only knows Teleport and Kinesis at the start. So wouldn't Gengar win then? In Pokemon Yellow, Poison-types have it much harder than in Red and Blue because of the gym leaders' new move sets. Giovanni has four Pokemon with Earthquake and Lance won't just spam agility with all his dragons! This race is going to be a weird one. From all the comments and poll before the premiere of the video, it seems people are fairly passionate about their picks to win this one. So let's find out who wins in this race! The grinning ghost or the spoon-wielding powerhouse?

The substitute grind really slowed Gengar down. Maybe a more offensive set with Thunderbolt and Psychic as well as a few more levels would speed it up. There are a lot of bikers, bird keepers, and swimmers in the mid/late game that a thunderbolt/psychic gengar would just eat right up for more exp.

Just one level 100? If you can pick which moves it kept as it leveled up, with judicious use of Ethers and PP ups (and the Psychic TM) Alakazam might be able to pull it off. Gengar does get more TMs, but it's base learnset is inferior so I'm not sure.

@@jaycobsimmons218 Hypnosis is woefully inaccurate. But sleep is super broken in Gen 1 so it may be worth it. Gengar also lacks good STAB and even if it had good STAB moves to use, they'd run off its inferior Attack STAT. And the lack of STAB also means it can do less damage than it might seem against neutral targets because the base power of the moves without STAB really show against bulkier mons. Zam's limited movepool only shows against opposing Psychics really though there's also the fact that it has paper physical bulk while Gengar is more like cardboard in comparison.

Not only is ghost physical in the early gens, in gen 1, there is only a single ghost move that benefits from your stats. That is lick. The only other damaging ghost move in the game is nightshade which deals fixed damage. There are two factors regarding audio. I am working to even this out. I have a fixed recording location with fixed mic / chair positions. But it's hard to get the exact same positioning and angle each day. I'm working on this though. 1) I have a chronic cough and it is worsening. It shreds my vocal chords a lot and makes me sound dramatically different between different days of recording. I'm searching for medical solutions to this right now. 2) I'm learning that I deliver lines different depending on where I am in the recording process. When I first sit down my voice is deeper, slower, and more relaxed. As I go it gets higher and thinner. I think the re-takes all sound different because I am using a different type of voice.

I was thinking about it, and I think grinding instead of getting substitute might help gengar as the Pokémon with earthquake which was one of the main reasons that you went down the substitute route, have poor special out side of dugtrio but mega drain could help there and mega drain would help with Rhydon. So you could theoretically with a high enough level wipe them all out (outside of dugtrio) with psychic before they could have a chance to use earthquake. But one flaw with this is that other Pokémon that you used substitute for might be a problem, but at the same time you would be at a higher level so they might not be as big of an issue. So I think that grinding might be a better play
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon 3 жыл бұрын
I do believe grinding will be better now. I had Butterfree's performance with substitute stuck in my mind coloring my decision making when I played this. I thought substitute would add the consistency needed to streamroll the league twice without any resets or lost time and just barely edge Alakazam out. Basically it was a gamble to trade Gengar's time lead for the consistency substitute could provide.

Great seeing my 2 favorite gen 1 Pokemon in a head to head! I feel you kind of limited yourself for Gengar by going for Hypnosis Dream Eater Substitute. Gengar only has 5 base spec lower than alakazam. Look at the E4 four footage and see how well Gengar can tank hits. He doesnt need the same wall butterfree needs. Thunderbolt Megadrain Rest Psychic, to me seems like a better moveset. Good coverage and 2 healing options. Perhaps mimic over Megadrain for Lance and Champ. I fully understand that after learning about substitute combo with sleep you want to use it more, but Gengar is a beast, he doesnt need to cower behind some intern, he can smile and electrocute most pokemon, or drain them, or dominate their minds. Does make him sleepy though. No real comments on your Alakazam play except teach Psychic ASAP, as you mentioned, its his best move, you arent going to replace it with anything. Getting substitute slowed Gengar down far too much, and then using sub/hypnosis strats is also a slow stall-y strategy like we saw with Butterfree. Gengar is a sweeper like Alakazam, I think just use Gengar that way and he'd win because of the early lead. Gengar isnt a squishy pokemon in this gen, so he didnt need sub. Ice beam is easy to get, 95 base power and super effective vs those difficult ground pokemon, would make Lance a joke, and give you something to blast through exeggcutor quickly. It's better than mega drain in basically any circumstance. Keep ice beam/thunderbolt and maybe psychic, just go full sweeper. Remember that if you're dealing neutral damage anyway, Icebeam/Tbolt will always do more damage than psychic with the higher base power. Spare move slot for hypnosis or mimic or whatever, but I wouldnt expect many pokemon to survive the basic Gengar sweeper in this gen.

Hey Scott I just wanted to share with you my most important Pokémon memory. It’s actually one of the first memories I have. I was about 4 years old and my parents had sat me down in the electronics dept. in Walmart. They told me that I was getting to that age where I couldn’t stop talking so they were getting me a game boy so I could shut the heck up. They showed me the games and they let me choose any game I wanted. For some reason I felt a lot of pressure to pick the right one since my parents were staring seeing which one I would choose. My eyes wandered until I saw a bright yellow monster with red on its cheeks. I didn’t even know it at the time, but that was pikachu and pokemon yellow version. My parents bought it for me and it soon became all I could play. Very recently I picked up my old copy of Pokémon yellow and I played it to completion re living my childhood nearly 20 years later. I couldn’t believe that such an old game still worked AND STILL made me feel the way I did when I was young. I like your channel a lot because you play Pokémon yellow more than jrose and mahdrybread. Ofc Alakazam is strong, but getting Gengar that wrong, while knowing Gen1 mechanics, ... dissapointment. Gengar should win in yellow if played differently. You should have know this, while you tried in past challenge a "substitute" option, and lost there much time aswell instead of not using.

I agree that I picked the incorrect strategy. I used it for a variety of reasons. 1. Giovanni, Sabrina, Koga 2. The consistent league run 3. Spending my time lead on something that will add consistency to help with the other important metrics (resets, consistent league time) 4. Bias because I had just used it in my most recent Butterfree video and it really help the Butterfly make it's sleep tactics far more consistent. I felt it would add consistency to Gengar's 60% hypnosis. In the end I agree with you and I want to continue to work on Gengar's run to improve the time. However, I did mention at the beginning that human error is a part of these races. This is not intended to be an objective scientific test.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Thank you , there you are right. Consistent might it be, but when points come for time and points , its not always that easy. In the Butterfree/Beedril run it was more consistent , but there you lost time aswell. I wonder how things would be if the item collecting part would be the rare candys, and using them in points, where it could improve Gengars flexibility more. I know thats not what is the option firstly, but if consistent for league is the question, it can be considert. Was just unhappy as a Gengar fan, however, options are there to use, and so every human use them surely differently. I try myself a bit too, maybe than i can give you some advise if i find one for me. However... i just tried until beating brook with grimer and koffing, i can tell its not as you would imagine, in case of advantage for one side. :)

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon there is a huge difference since Butterfree is base 80 special and Gengar is 130. I think Gengar's stat dominance makes it preferable to hit hard and fast. Glad I can finally catch this, as you released it the day I started my vacation. I had a gut feeling Gengar would win and I still feel justified in that feeling seeing the results. 2 levels and 5 minutes in the grand scheme of things is a slim margin, and should I be forced to choose between the two I would still lean to Gengar for the versatility the demonic balloon brings to the table. Great video, hopefully the Bovine Brawl will be this great of a race when it comes out.

It's not that surprising, to be completely honest. Psychic is far and away better than ghost or poison in gen1 (big surprise, I know, lol), and when the 2 are compared competitively, Alakazam is overall better, while Gengar, despite technically being OU, isn't particularly good in that tier. It's also worth mentioning that Gengar effectively doesn't have any STAB moves that are usable in gen1, which makes quite a huge difference as well when compared to Alakazam

The misdreavus episode also proves this. Misdreavus does not have the Poison type that makes the Gastly line horrible against psychic Pokémon or psychic moves and even then with an appropriate gen 1 moveset it still sucks. Gengar only is good by coverage alone and sweeper strats.

@@shadowtitanx3962 SB came in Gen 2 and DC was Gen 3 - both years after the established what was physical/special. They really should have flipped Ghost and Dark in Gen 2 as all Gen 2 DARK moves are now physical, but the 90s and early 2000s was a weird time, and none of them cared that much cause they thought Pokemon would fail after Gen 3.

I have an idea for a VERY different versus video. Pokemon BW; Zebstrika vs. Rapidash, with the same races as the gen 1 fossil vs. challenge. 1; Fastest/lowest level starting with pre-evos. 2; Fastest/lowest level starting with the evolved forms. 3; Elite 4 with no resets. It'll be interesting due to the move diversity.

Another great video from Great Scott! I'm hyped for the starter showdown if and when you get that done! Anyways, here's some fun facts for you! Fun fact: Alakazam us actually based on a Kitsune, a Japanese Fox Spirit, which are said to be super intelligent and have psychic powers. That's also why Ninetails, who is also a kitsune, but more specifically a 9-tailed fox, can learn extrasensory or psyshock in later generations. Another fun fact: my wife and I are planning to do a Clefable/Gengar gijinka cosplay for Halloween this year! Also, I love the little fourishes of music you put in for when you do battles or go to different places. Reminds me of how in Black and White the music will change slightly if you're walking, or close to certain landmarks on the map. I've been listening to a lot of Pokémon Stadium music since I've been drawing a bunch of scenes of Stadium fights for my next chapter, so, if it's not too much of a hassle, I'd say maybe look into plugging some Stadium music in here and there to break up the monotony of the Gameboy fight music here and there with some classic N64 soundfont. Anyway, I should close this, before I write a novel. As always, keep up the amazing videos, and GLHF on futute challenges!

Have you considered a Vs. tournament arc where you have 64 or 128 pokemon to start with, and with the winners you race again with the knowledge you have gained from originally racing them to get better times, this could be a sort of long term content, but you would have to establish set rules for the entirety of the tournament.
