Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

I didn't realize how much earlier Charizard gets access to Flamethrower than Typhlosion, though it may not be as crucial since both get access to Fire Punch early on. Typhlosion has an additional advantage of having access to Thunderpunch, and Charizard's flying type could prove to be a liability. I predict another Hidden Power Rock for both in the second playthrough (which is becoming my favorite hidden power, it's use case is so niche and unique!). Oh, and Gligar might be quietly crying in the corner again..

This brings back memories. When Gen2 first came out, a friend of mine got his copy of silver before i ever got a gen2 game. He didnt bother reading any of the text, didnt know what to do or where to go and got stuck right at the beginning before even the first rival fight. He thought "maybe i need to train more to continue". Blasting through the first few trainers and gyms with a lvl 37 Typhlosion certainly was an experience.

The lack of physical/special split is a big advantage for Typhlosion in generation 2 since the elemental punches are still special-based. I think the same contest in generation 4 might turn out in favor of Charizard, albeit still being pretty close.

Glad that my all time favorite starter did such a good job in my first ever pokemon game. Access to Thunder Punch makes a big difference since that coverage for water types is so useful. I think it’s awesome seeing just how much better you’ve gotten at Crystal, especially how much of an impact it makes cutting out Sprout Tower and memorizing the dark areas without Flash. It’s very cool seeing you improve so much at routing. I will say though, while I don’t know if this would’ve been better, I’m surprised you didn’t make use of the Defense Curl + Rollout strategy with Typhlosion to beat Lance in the first solo. Obviously HP Ice is way better for the Dragonite in the second solo, but that caught me by surprise. (Also I think it’s really funny that Charizard learns Defense Curl, but not Rollout)

Happy to see my boy Typhlosion. I have fond memories of playing Crystal as a kid and steamrolling through the league with him. With Flame Wheel, Earthquake, and Thunder punch, nothing even slowed him down until Lance. He's still one of my favorite starters to date, even though he's way worse in HG/SS because of the Special split and not getting Thunder Punch. And Charizard struggled exactly where I expected, Lance with his Gyarados and Aerodactyl. Rock Slide on a fast Mon is just devastating for him, and he didn't have an electric move to easily take out Gyarados. Absolutely LOVED this video!

Impressive performance by my boy Typhlosion! The Cyndaquil line has always been my favourite fire starter, my only negative against it is that I've always liked Quilava's design more than Typhlosion, but it is what it is. Looking forward to a Cyndaquil run some day! As I got older and learned about the various mechanics of the Pokémon games, I was always surprised that fire was a special type and not a physical type, though I'm not sure why. Could argue either way really!

As I said in the Meganum/Venusaur video, Charizard does get Flamethrower much earlier than Typhlosion, but doesn't get ThunderPunch, so the drake will melt through a lot of the game but will likely struggle with Water-types more. As for base stats being identical...y'know, if I could, I'd alter Charizard's stats to make him more physically-oriented - switch his Atk and Sp. Atk, at least in Gen 4 onwards. The Kanto starters are all primarily special attackers as it is, and Charizard's physical movepool in Gen 4+ is so much wider than his special movepool (not to mention Swords Dance, Dragon Dance, and Belly Drum), so I think turning Charizard into a physical beast is justified. Just like how I'd turn Sceptile into a physical attacker, too - the physical Leaf Blade being his signature move, along with most of his moves being physical as well, and his design, all scream for his Atk and Sp. Atk to be switched.

Base stats are identical. Typhlosion may have trouble in the first gym. Charizard may have trouble in the...third? The one with the rolling cow. Lance's Aerodactyl needs to go down in one hit or the quadruple-effective Rock Slide is going to wreck Charizard. Poliwrath may give some trouble to Typhlosion, while Charizard may have Wing Attack by then. On balance I think Typhlosion barely takes it, but I'm rooting for Charizard. Pokemon Red was my first game in the franchise.

Well in the Gen 2 games I could have Rollout 1 shot 6x LV 30 Pokemon instantly including Quilava itself if you don't beat it in 1 attack but in Crystal you actually would need to put it to sleep/Paralyze it twice due to its held item that cures that effect though Charizard/Typlosion don't really have a easy way to cause those effects to begin with. it also doesn't help that MOST Starters will be MALE and Milktank will use Attract IF possible.

Ah, I just wanted to leave some advise for the Feraligatr vs Blastoise run. For Fer more specifically: 1- Skip Sprout tower, and head directly to Falkner. Fer should be able to sweep with rage. If the Pidgey only hits with tackle at least 2 times, that should be enough to build up enough rage to one shot Pidgeotto. 2- rage strats are also the way to go vs Bugsy, especially against Scyther. If it hits you with fury cutter at least twice, that should be enough, in addition to all the previous damage accumulated from the two cocoons. 3- to beat the rival before Ilex forest, and especially his Bayleef, you might have to temporarily teach fury cutter to Feraligatr. You can get rid of it as soon as you enter Ilex forest for Headbutt or Ice punch in goldenrod, but fury cutter might be the best way to beat his grass starter at that point. You can't build up rage cause he starts with a gosht. 4- Don't forget dig in Goldenrod. Feraligatr can learn dig. Ofc, you can also beat Whitney with rage spam, especially if she locks herself into rollout, but dig might also be useful. 5- For Morty, his goshts obviously don't have levitate, cause there's no abilities in this gen. But dig should be enough to get one shots on all his goshts. That in addition to bite should be enough to get you through him. 6- Chuck's Primeape should be an easy one shot with Surf. And Poliwrath might just be Feraligatr's first obstacle, cause it has nothing to hit other water types with. That's why I advise you to try and get return before Chuck to hit the Poliwrath and any other water types. If you can't, I guess headbutt should be enough. 7- If you do Pryce 1st, then by then you should have return for his two water types: Seel and Dewgong. Should be easy one shots, and Piloswine goes down to Surf. 8- Jasmine might seem intimidating at 1st glance, but don't fret. Her magnemites go down to dig, and Steelix goes down to one Surf. 9- Claire should also be easy. Either return (which is preferable because Fer has a higher attack) or ice punch the Dragonairs, and return the Kingdra. If Meganium could get one shots on them with return, so should Fer. 10- Against Will, you'll also have to rely on return, and kinda bite if you want to. I don't remember if Fer gets Crunch in gen 2, but Ik for sure it gets bite. You'll have to rely on it and return to get one shots. 11- Koga should also be easy with a mix of Surf, Earthquake and return. 12- Bruno is always easy. Just use return and e-quake. 13- Karen is challenging. You'll have to insist with e-quake on Umbreon. Luckily after it goes down, all her other mons are easy. Vileplume goes down to return, Gengar to earthquake and so does Houndoom. Murkrow is a joke. 14- Fer should not struggle vs Lance. Surf and Ice beam should carry you. Use return on Gyarados. 15- For red you might want to set up with curse after beating Pikachu, and sweep with either Earthquake or return. If you outspeed Pikachu, then take it down with Earthquake, and then proceed to set up with curse on Snorlax and get one shots on the rest of his team with either return or earthquake. If you ask me, a good moveset for Feraligatr for the Red fight, would be: curse, return, earthquake, and rest. With that, Red should not be too hard. With that, Fer should sweep through the game, it's less than ideal sp. Attack not a problem.

Typlosion was my Ace when I bought Gold back when it came out. I purchased the Japanese version from a local GameStop and used Flameboi exclusively through the game. I solo’d the game with him using Flamethrower and Flame Wheel because they did big damage through the entire game once I learned them. I could only memorize what potions and poke balls were from the store since I couldn’t read the Japanese. Lol beat the entire game, including Red, with 0 knockouts and no guide. I just grinded enough as I wandered around from area to area. I think I ended the game with him being level 83. Flamethrower, Flame Wheel, Quick Attack, and I think Thunder Punch. It was a really fun experience to beat the game in Japanese before I ever got it in English!

I am pick Typhlosion basically because of thunder punch and lacking the flying type. Charizard has the same abysmal matchup vs Lance that Ho-oh had without the massive attack to help out. One has half of Lance’s team to worry about while the other has basically return for the entire team. Unless Typhlosion loses so much time elsewhere which I don’t really see I doubt Charizard in the first playthrough can pull it off.

I love Scott’s foreshadowing that sometimes a secondary typing gives you an advantage that pushes you over certain battles and anchors you in others. That’s 100% the case with Charizard. Typholision being a mono fire type with a little coverage gives it a small enough advantage over Charizard which is probably why I favored it over its Gen 1 counterpart.

Really fun video! I suspect that if you were to redo this race in Yellow version (with a back-ported Typhlosion) Charizard would win due to the prevalence of ground types and Earthquake, making the flying type a much stronger asset and without a Thunder punch TM Typhlosion wouldn't quite have the coverage advantage against Charizard. Still, it was very nice to see my favorite starter evolution line do well!

The fire starters are my favourite, and in particular Typhlosion and Charizard,😊 which made me feel rooting for them both. These results were surprising me quite a lot, I thought that having a secondary type usually is better, but I guess that the last 2 videos were proving the point that not all secondary types are an advantage. But I think that charizard was dominating the early game because of its early access to flamethrower and to a flying move . But Typhlosion had the right coverage for each major battle . But if that match was held in gen 4 the results were really different.🤔 For now, I'm not sure if Feraligatr would win this one because it's more of a physical attacker , but blastoise has not so good moves in terms of level up . But I assume that these two will have similar results . One thing is for sure I'm really excited for this.😊

Overall, Fire type is much better in Johto (Gen 2) than in Kanto, since they do not have many struggles as they do in Kanto (Gen 1), like Lorelei's Lapras, Lance's Gyarados, Yellow Giovanni, Misty, and Champion's Sandslash and Cloyster, relying on STAB Fire Blast for those that learn Flamethrower late or cannot learn Flamethrower, like Arcanine and Moltres, having move puddles for some, like Flareon and even Moltres, and having very middling Special for most Fire types except for Ninetales, Flareon, and Moltres. In Johto, they resist Ice, have better Special Attack than in Gen 1 except for Ninetales (Nerf), Moltres (Same), Rapidash (Same), and Flareon (Nerf), have better access to Flamethrower at slightly earlier levels for some Fire types, and their weaknesses are not as problematic or exploitable as they were in Gen 1 other than Water types. There's not a lot of Earthquake or Rock Slide users in Gen 2 compare to later Gens, where teams have far better diverse movesets. The matchups in Johto are way better for Fire types than Grass types, since Fire hits at least neutral or Super Effective against everyone but Clair and Lance. As for the runs themselves, coverage is the name of the game for Typhlosion. Thunder Punch is the main thing it has over Charizard's Flying type. Thunder Punch really helps against Water types, allowing it to run Hidden Power Ice for Lance. And, there's no major trainer that uses a Water/Ground type until Gen 3, where Hidden Power Grass would be an option for Fire types. Charizard not having Thunder Punch hurts, since it would have to choose either HP Electric for the Water types or HP Ice for the Dragonites. Still, both of them have a very good time for Johto thanks to their overall matchups in Johto. I wonder how will the Water starters fare. Water is a consistently excellent type throughout the series.

I predict Feraligatr. Neither it nor Blastoise have good special attack, so they're bad at attacking within their element. Blastoise wastes a lot of points in special defense in a game where electric and grass don't have terrific representation. Feraligatr has 22 points more attack, equal defense and speed, and a little more hp. Same base stat totals, but Feraligatr is simply optimized better for this environment. It also starts with a better water move. Teachable moves, where they matter, are the same.

I recently did a playthrough of Crystal on my 3DS with a Typhlosion. I was super lucky to get a full power hidden power ice DV Typhlosion, which was absolutely amazing to play with! That is definitely the best combo for Typhlosion in Gen 2!

I have no particular comment to make, so here's some competitive GSC tidbits. Although the Fire type is still not that great in GSC OU, there are FIVE Fire types in the Borderline tier, including Charizard and Typhlosion along with Houndoom, Moltres, and Entei. Charizard's niche compared to other Fire types is interesting in that it is based around using Charizard's relatively weak Attack power. By breeding Charizard with Snorlax though, you can get a Charizard with Belly Drum, making it the fastest user of that move available. Just set up a Belly Drum and use Rock Slide and Earthquake to defeat everything... at least everything that isn't faster and capable of using super effective moves (Starmie, Raikou, Gengar, etc). Typhlosion's niche comes from not being a Flying type like Moltres and Charizard (thus taking less damage from Electric and Rock moves), being more Special-oriented than Entei, and having access to Thunder Punch. It can serve as a mixed attacker using Fire Blast, Thunder Punch, and/or Hidden Power Grass/Ice along with Dynamic Punch and/or Earthquake. That said, you might notice that there's not enough move slots available, and not all of these moves are amazing, so Typhlosion can be played around once its gimmick is figured out.

Cannot wait for Feraligatr versus Blastoise. The return of the immensely powerful Gen II Rage will probably give Feraligatr an edge over Blastoise in the early game, but also its stats are just kind of...better. It's really, imo, the first example of a base stat spread that has been tuned up compared to the rest. Also, as an aside, Feraligatr is only the speedrun Pokemon of choice for a little while iirc, they use RNG manip to pivot to Entei later on because well, yeah a Level 40 legendary Fire-type you can catch before Morty would be pretty good. I don't really have anything to say about the results of the video though. I think I expected Typhlosion to win? There's just less difference between these two than Meganium and Venusaur, and I think Thunderpunch was always going to be the difference maker between the two. The really high times between these two and Ho-Oh do suggest to me that Fire-types are probably positioned pretty well in Gen II as a whole, but we don't really have the data for it like we do in Gen I.

First ever lvl 100 mon I ever had, and it was absolutely beastly. I used it to solo red up to the honor battle. My slash was too much.

Rage is kind of fun against Whitney, when her Clefairy uses Double Slap and every single hit from it boosts Rage. Obviously not the most efficient when the alternative is to knock out Clefairy in one hit and Miltank in two, but fun.

Access to Thunderpunch is what pushes Typlosion over the edge and, honestly, makes it one of the most powerful starters in the series. It's funny how it and Ferigator are just really fucking good, so Megainum looks that much worse in comparsion. (I wouldn't say it's as good as Swampert, or Prernima or Skeledirge but I would put it in top 10 of best starters for a single player adventure) But yeah, lack of it really hurts Charizard. Elemental punchs in gen 2, despite only having 70 base power, showcase just how powerful type coverage is.

31:40 Use Thunder Punch?? Also, Feraligatr is the speedrunning Pokemon for Johto thanks to Rage. They have to use Totodile vs Falkner and Croconaw vs Bugsy, so they can't steamroll with a fully evolved Pokemon, and Rage is broken in Gen 2. Rage stacks in power going from 1x to 2x to 3x and so on until it's at 255x power whenever you click Rage, even if you miss. It's absolutely broken and you should remember it for Feraligatr if there are fights with multiple Pokemon he can't oneshot back to back, because by the 3rd or 4th Pokemon in that fight, Rage could likely OHKO everything that's left. Obviously max friendship Return outdamages Rage since Rage starts at 20 power and Return is 102 power, but Feraligatr *_starts_* with Rage.

I always figured level up evolutions are partly based on the trainer's experience, bug catchers and youngsters have over leveled pokemon because they are inexperienced, Falkner got his pokemon from his dad, an experienced trainer we can assume, who could likely get a Pidgey to evolve earlier than us, the average trainer

My Prediction as I haven't watched very far into the video yet, Charizard will probably win, Even though Typhlosion has a much better move pool yet again, Charizard gets flamethrower 26 levels earlier which I feel will be a big difference maker but we will see... Edit: *Spoilers* I have finished the Video and I'm happy to say I was mistaken. Don't get me wrong I like Charizard, but Typhlosion is my favorite starter Pokémon. Not only that but Charizard is game freaks favorite child alongside Pikachu (two megas and a gmax form). I thought the flamethrower difference was huge but it didn't matter when it came to coverage, although I bet that was the reason they were so close. Looking forward to the next video. Also fun fact I accidentally misspelled Charizard while typing this comment and its actually an option on spell check and no I never added it to my dictionary.

My guess is that Charizard does better in this game but Typhlosion might do better in later gens, since Charizard gets immunity to ground, but that 4x weakness to rock can be brutal... in Gen 3+ where there's actually some threatening rock moves. Although rock is a more threatening type in Gen 2 than it is in Gen 1, at least, so that might help Typhlosion. Now to see what actually happens...

Do you think hidden power electric would have been a boon to charizard for opponents like gyarados and blastoise? I realize you give up some power with hp ice against dragon types, but it seems like the water types were slightly more problematic that I’m curious if hp electric would have smoothed that out.

HP electric tanks the HP DV makes Clair and Lance less consistent and Blue’s Gyarados isn’t really a threat. It might help against Red’s Blastoise but I already had the sunny day strat for that, so I didn’t think it was a good choice.
