Managers do all of these things as well. The distinction between managers and leaders is often hyped up and reflects a stereotypical bifurcation rather than a qualitatively distinct reality. In truth, many leaders need to manage operations and many managers need to inspire people.

And that alone says a lot because there are a lot of churches as well as the company's don't know the difference between the two. And for me, it will take me a long way in whichever to go. Thank you, Scott.

I searched for "tips for new managers" and this video is the first I watched. How glad I am that I found this. Thank you SO much for helping me realize that I can continue leading my co-workers without having to manage them. You have helped me so much without ever actually meeting me. Keep posting these gems. I'm very impressed with this video. I'm sad to say the my manager is leaving my company and she's been the ideal leader, supporting, motivating and constructive. She was the anti-manager. She encouraged idea building and freedom to choose how the work gets done. I love this video because it reinforces my beliefs about the best people to work with. My former leader, not manager, acted as a partner with me in our business rather than a person who needed to breathe down my neck and enforce unimportant guidelines and regulations. I grew instead of retreated as a result.
@melvinstolk81912 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I am an upcoming manager. Is it possible that you'd be able to teach me some tips?
@selflovesciencepodcast8672 жыл бұрын
@@melvinstolk8191 I am now a leader myself and have had the opportunity to be surrounded by really incredible leadership. 1. If you're managing people, create the goals together. 2. You can be responsible for the "what" of what the team needs to get done and allow the team to drive the "how" of what to get done. This is the agile approach to leadership. 3. Allow the team to make mistakes. Failures trigger emotional responses which lead to change. If the team is afraid of a leader breathing over their necks, they will never grow. They will only retreat. Focus on what the team is doing well, take those success steps and apply them to your next round of work. If the team fails at 99/100 things, analyze what part of the *process* isn't working. Never focus on making people wrong. If employees are not succeeding, fix the process and coach the people.

This video brought a lot of information to the surface on the topic of leadership. As a leader you have to understand and deliver in your role. The reason why is because people are depending on you and looking to you to make the decisions that will ultimately affect them one way or another on a daily basis. On the otter hand as a manager you are focusing more on the fact that your employees have a job to do and your role is to ensure that job gets completed on time. These are two very different approaches and this video does a great job of comparing and contrasting between the two. The B.E.C.C analogy was perfectly stated and the concept is excellent. Thank you for sharing the information!

good video, something to remember though that you need attributes from both sides depending on the staff and the task at hand. (Nothing major) It was around seven years ago because of anger, I took a project, started "bending" some rules (basically what you just pointed out.) and found myself being promoted. Scott Williams. You literally have me in tears over here! lol. You just described me to a T! This was soo refreshing! I have felt like this for YEARS and always felt extremely different from others around me. Not running into other leader types..i guess. I have just begun attending college courses in business management. This video was part of my homework for my 2nd day of school and I must say...I LOVE THIS VIDEO. Question for you though. Is management the only type of career for a person who feels they are a natural leader? I am currently going for my bachelors in Human Resources. Listening to this video just put some fire under my butt!! Lol. I would like to tap in to my full potential and have had WAYY too much bad experience with managers. So I am wondering if that is the best career move.

+April Riley Sorry if this is old, but I think you can do both. I have a great manager in my job right now but it's because he also displays these characteristics of a leader. I often watch this video to remind me of the kind of supervisor/leader, that I want to be. If you want to be an HR manager, go for it. Managers and leaders don't have to be two separate things, and from my experience, HR people that have these kind of people skills are GOLD! As HR, you can identify the job fit and help take people to the next level in cultivating talent from within the company. My HR lady helped me to identify the skills I needed for promotion and I can't thank her enough! - Oh, and she's not even manager, but we love her.

Thanks for responding :-). Great managers are rare. Even more rare to find one that has leadership skills, so if you have one..that is awesome :-). This became one of my biggest obstacles while in this class. It left me wondering what exactly they expected us to learn..lol. When I read your response, it made perfect sense. Thanks ;-) I am still enrolled in HR Management and on my 4th term. Ive always known managers to be just that, and HR to be the ones to just handle alot of bs for their company. I guess it really just depends on the person, and the company. I really hope to be able to work for an awesome company, and make a difference. I am one of those rare people who CARES about fitting the right person with the right job/position (things just work/run better that way!), and watch the company and the individual grow from it.

Hi Sir, First of all, Thank you very much for this great video, I enjoy and learn a lot from your content. I am more on the leader side, but I strongly think after watching your video that, in a corporate environment it's really great to be a bit of both...I'm thinking like 60% manager, 40% Leader...I may be wrong though, in which case please let me know what you think. I'm in dire need of good advice about which side I should choose, should I be a Leader, or is it being a manager that would benefit me more in a corporate setting, especially when I'm an aspiring entrepreneur. You see, I've been working as a senior analyst for about 6 years now and I've worked with great companies. I want to learn all I can about how I to lead a team with influence but, I'm more used to watching managers managing people from a positional standpoint which most of the time does not go too well, cuz they tend to become bossy and aggressive causing the team members to lose motivation and slack productivity. Hence, I'm really confused which model I should choose when I get the full fledged responsibility of leading a team as a manager. Please help me with this confusion, I need to clear my mind on this and I need your help/advice badly. Thank you, Anootosh.
