So, my wife picked up a hyundai santa fe years ago... I was dubious. But so far so good. It's over 275k miles and going strong. Only regular maintenance. No major issues at all. Of course now that I said that it will grenade itself tomorrow haha!!!

I've had the same experience. I had a 2005 Hyundai Accent (their bottom model) with 54k on it. When I *DROVE* it to the junkyard, it had 245k miles on it. the shift solenoid was worn out, but the car was still going.

The 6V in the santa fe is better than the V6 they put in GMC, Chevy and Buick. I got a 2014 santa fe (6V) and it runs like new with 153K miles so far.

I've had 2 sonatas with high mileage at trade in and currently have a Sportage SX and they've all been perfect with me and I drive my cars hard. If you take care of them they last a long time.

Purchased a 2016 Kia Sorrento with only 49,880 miles. Carfax said it had 30 days and over 10,000 miles of powertrain warranty. Needs a engine and Kia is stating that their internal date was different and I was 2 weeks out of time but the Kia was at the dealership for a week and so I called to ask for some help. They said that they have a goodwill program since it just ran out but only in their internal system which I have ask for that info and had no response

Scotty. My daughter bought a 2008 Hyundai Elantra SE new in 08’. She drives it to work & back, a 95 mile round trip. With 220,000 miles - she never had a problem. Changed timing belt once, the oil at regular intervals, brakes, wipers & tires. Not one major repair. Still going strong. And my wife bought the same car (just different color) 2 months after my daughter. Her Elantra has 55,000 miles. Same condition and no repairs. Both are going strong in NY weather. So I’m not too sure where you get your “not made well & don’t last” opinion. They certainly have performed extremely well for this household.

There cars that just aren’t built well, Hyundai and kia have a massive class action lawsuit going on do to there catastrophic engine failures cause there has been so many. No other auto maker has had that particular lawsuit before.

When my car turned off at traffic lights and we brought it to several mechanics for years nobody could find a problem. Then my friend came over, he works on his own cars. He opened the hood and said: can you see the air intake? Yes ..... I see a large hole there. Yep, a huge hole that I could see but mechanics couldn’t? He replaced the intake and it never happened again

Same... Our 2001 Accent lasted 230k of hard daily driving before the transmission went. And our 2009 Sonata is still a daily driver and has 219k still going strong. Both driven hard, and not as well maintained as they should be. Not sure why they've lasted so well, but so far so good for us. Jury is still out my our 2015 Sonata... Only 45k on it so far.

When did you change the transmission fluild? I have a 2014 with 65,000 on it. It states change trans fluid at 60,000 only if you drive in severe conditions. Otherwise I can't find when or if I should change it.

The Hyundais we buy in Australia are made in South Korea, and they have a strong reputation. US stock is built in the US, and the problems with your vehicles don't occur with S Korean builds

Are the parts sourced differently? It’s the materials that break down. Forget about the mechanics, it’s things like paint flaking, rubber crumbling, interior fabric wearing thin, etc… VW’s are like this too.

Was just at a Kia dealership. Some were assembled in Mexico, but most of them were assembled in Korea, with parts from Korea. The Souls seemed to be the most common made/parts sourced in Mexico. Most of the other models were Korean sourced. At least at dealerships in Ohio.

I was amazed that scotty could find anything so radically wrong with Hyundai they are knocking on the door of BMW build quality at a Ford price point and I'd not heard anyone say they had ever had any probs with one. I am coming to the conclusion that cars imported to the USA were fitted with a delayed unreliability module !

I have a 2016 Sante Fe with 85,000 miles on it. Head Gasket went out and not under warranty and Hyundai Corporate Customer Service was terrible!! Junk cars, junk service.

I absolutely hate it when people say that. They are the same people that don't do oil changes regularly. The only time 25k mile reliability review is valid is when you've got a sports car running 500hp and above. Other than that, get back to me at 90-100k

Had a 2010 Hyundai Tucson that I bought mid 2009 and had it up until May this year. So roughly 12 years and 164k miles and only 1 issue where the radiator started leaking and that was around 125k miles. Traded it in for a 2021 Tucson. I'm throughly convinced that as long as you keep up with maintenance and not drive like a bat out of hell, a Hyundai will last you for a very long time like mine did. Aloha from Hawaii Scotty!!!

My family has had good experience with Hyundai. I also have a friend who bought a very old 90s hyundai with 400,000 miles on it and in running condition for a few hundred dollars, drove it for 6 months, then resold it. That thing was a champ.

Not discounting your experience but buying a Hyundai is like Russian roulette. Yes you’ll get some over 200,000 miles and others will have major problems a lot sooner then that. Consumer Reports gives a view generally into reliability for cars. I own 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid with 205,000 miles with no maintenance issues but the battery pack which is expected. Scotty is talking about overall reliability and cost and not some particular cars like the ones you experienced. Hope one of those 200,000 miles Hyundai’s was your.👌🏻✌🏻

As a South Korean, I think Hyundai/Kias are generally reliable, but you can get some crap ones. With Toyota/Honda, the probability is much lower.

3:30 Oil and air pushing the oil dipstick up and out can also easily be caused by a plugged PCV valve, or a plugged up vacuum source upstream for the PCV valve.

Yup! The crankcase pressure has to go somewhere, and it's designed to be vacuumed by the PCV system. They get clogged or stuck all the time by oil vapors. Really, I'm kinda surprised a "mechanic" would forget this. Think maybe he's rushing his responses.

When you say to change your transmission fluid at 40 to 50 thousand miles, should the filter be changed as well? Also at what mileage is it best to not change the trans fluid anymore where it becomes risky to change it if it's never been changed? Also on some cars where you need to pump the trans fluid in don't you need a lift to lift the car whole car up to be able to do it?

I deliver freight to dealerships, mainly engines and transmissions. 5 to 10 hyundai/kia's a week for the last 5 years. I've never had a toyota engine in my trailer.

Makes sense considering their respective warranty programs. Plus Toyota engines tend to cost a lot due to their engineering. By the time they go out, they outvalue the car.

If you need a replacement Toyota engine, they are dirt cheap. More supply from wrecks than demand from blown engines. If you need a junk yard Hyundai engine, they want a lot of money for it, high demand.

I understand why people criticize Hyundai for that but at the same time. Toyota has existed since 1910. Hyundai what 1969 and made ships and still makes their own steel and engines and transmissions now? I mean give them a break. Yes the early 2000 ones were more bulletproof than now but they need more experience especially trying to take a mitsubishi unreliable engine design and trying to make it reliable

Ok, watch your videos fairly regularly, today because we own two Hyundais . 2013 Tuscon runs great at 77,000 BUT the 2017 Sante Fe Sport has the engine issues for that year. Fought it out with the local dealer / Hyundai and got it "fixed' at no charge but won't be buying another one. BUT, until today never realized that you were from Lewiston. We ride our bikes past that old Sunoco station / pizza place often on day trips and were very surprised when you posted the picture of it on the video. Small world sometimes Love the knowledgeable and straight forward videos. Keep it up!!

I agree that Toyota and Honda are top brands, but even with great maintenance they can have issues, too. I had an 86 GTS that we had for about 10 years, and we spent at least 5-7k on repairs- heating and cooling, steering issues, sunroof got rusted, etc. And our 2005 Acura TL had the trans go out at 60,000 miles. Great cars, but anything mechanical will break.

I've owned two Hyundais(4 year lease and 10 year owned), two Hondas (11 years and 6 years current) and two Toyotas (6 years and 8 years) and have been happy with ALL of them. I have friends who own Mazda and Toyota vehicles and they both swear by them. BUT, i also have a friend who bought a Kia Rondo used years ago and it's still going strong at close to 10 years old AND my ex-wife's Elantra is still going strong at 15 years old. If you're the type who drives your car till it dies of exhaustion, maybe Scotty's right. If you're not, a Hyundai works just as well and you get more car for your money than a Honda or Toyota.

Bought an 18 Elantra just for work commute with 3 miles on it back in end of 17. 3 years and 78k miles later, no problems at all. Not one single issue. Did a brake job, changed oil every 5k miles, and bought tires. Not one single problem. Sold. New owner said he’s not having a single issue.

I'm confused. I had a Kia for 18 years and its still running with its new owner. My current car is a 2016 Kia and has not had a single problem that wasn't normal wear and tear parts, or that wasn't covered by warranty and its still running strong. Regular maintenance is critical with Kia and Hyundai.

They’re brainwashed. Once a brand gets stuck in their head they can’t let go. I’ve never owned a Honda or Toyota for two reasons. They’re cheaply made and the illogical cult following. Lucky you. My cousin got an Elantra in 2012 and it had it's transmission die twice. I made the mistake of getting a 2013 and will never make that mistake again... Utter garage drive and major electrical issues every few years. Meanwhile my parents 2010 toyota matrix still runs like a dream. Sure the new hyundai might be better but i wouldn't risk 30k+ on another one. Booked myself a 2022 corolla cross, just waiting for it to be delivered. Hopefully by Feb 2022, lol.

I just stick to Toyota's now, largely because that's what my mechanic says he sees the least problems. As for American cars I've only owned a year 2000 Chrysler Intrepid. I liked the power of the 6 cylinder but it had its issues too. Currently my family has all Toyota's. Thr oldest is a 2010 Matrix with 200k on it. All run fine but I'm replacing the Matrix with a corolla cross.

Based off of my own experience mine has been a good first time car. First owner bought in 2010 from the dealership and kept up with maintenance, She baby the car. She sold it to me because of a passing in the family, The daughter was given her dad's car and the mother got the daughter's car. I paid $1,100 for it and now the second owner of a blue 2010 Hyundai Accent GS with 188,660 miles on it. I've had it for 2 years, 5 months, 9 days and do basic maintenance on it. I only had one problem with the car and even my mechanic couldn't find it or fix it. The car had intermittent starting based on the weather,etc it would seem. It would start no problem one day and the very next day not at all. I got fed up with this and bought a blue driver, It had another bad day of not starting and i checked for codes with blue driver. There was a code for Bad or Failing Crankshaft Position Sensor, I found the sensor and removed it. I had a family member drive me to the dealership, I told them i want a new one of these and i put the new one in when i got home. I cleared the codes and just like that the my problem was gone. She's been good since then.

I'm working as a delivery driver. The company uses the Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra that they buy used (a lot cheaper than Toyota or Honda) with 40 to 70kmiles. There are four of these cars ranging from 2014 to 2017. The are driven six days a week, 10 hours a day. Three of the cars are fast approaching 200k and are running fine. The fourth car has a little less than 100k and it's in great shape. I've owned a couple of Hyundai's myself and never had a problem. I'm not a mechanic, just giving my personal experience having driven them a lot of miles.

I was told by a local dealership service writer that the 2005 to 2009 Tucsons were bullet proof. After that they went downhill fast and have never been as good. I have a 2005 Tucson with 200,000 miles and it's good (original engine and transmission, water pump, alternator, exhaust system, gas tank, wheel bearings, etc.).

One of the best cars I owned was a Hyundai Lantra, it went hard, ran on an oily rag, even when the wife cooked the engine as a water hose burst the next-day I put an oil flush in it and when the lifters ungloged it was fine. New oil and filter and all good as new. If that was a ford or Holden it would of been stuffed.

My last car was 5 years old and because I walk to work (I live across the street) it only had 35k miles on it. That was 2 years ago. Now I'm driving a 2 year old Genesis G70 with just under 12k miles. Honestly when my lease runs out I'll probably buy out the lease and keep this one another 3 years or so. My motto is, "Save enough money for a comfortable retirement and spend the rest however you choose". For some that might mean leasing a car every 3 years. For others that might be traveling the world. For some it may mean doing both. What good does all that extra money do once your dead? Life is short. Enjoy it. Just make sure you have enough money for retirement for 20 or so years.

Hey Scotty. I haven't really heard you mention a Mitsubishi 2ltr 4cyclinder motor. I have owned a few over the years and my purchase has been around the 100,000K mark and I upkeep the oil changes and do my own basic maintenance. It have added over 150,000kms in all cases and also have a Lancer wagon with 280,000kms and it burns no smoke and uses no oil and just keeps going.. even towed my trailer and kayaks to Queensland and back.. a round trip of 2000kms or so.... My wife burnt her Honda engine 1.2L 2011 jazz down to a crisp, the mechanic said he had never seen anything like it in his entire life. The car didn't make any noise or smoke, the engine light just went on. Had the engine cleaned out, checked and re-oiled, runs perfectly fine again. Very impressed.

I have a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe with 150,000 miles on it. Its a 4 cylinder and I pull a 21' center console over 3,000lbs with it once every couple of months. The vehicle is only rated at 1600lbs towing capacity and I've had no major problems so far. I only tow through town to the boat ramp where I don't go over 45-50 mph though. I have changed out the starter at around 100k which was kind of frustrating but that's the only problem Ive had so far.

I was a dedicated Chevy owner for decades, but finally gave up on them when they wouldn't last longer than 150K miles or so. Bought a new 2017 Tucson in '17. It's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Not one issue in 4.5 years. Plus, I'm on the ORIGINAL set of factory-installed tires (Hankook). Scotty...back in the late 1980s my uncle and my Dad both bought Hyundai Excels. To set the scene, my Uncle was/is German: very meticulous about his cars, and the upkeep; my Dad (God rest his soul) was NYPD, and wasn't as meticulous on the maintenance. So Scotty - if I have understood your way selecting cars then my choice of a 3.0 inline 6 non turbo Volvo S80 should work for a long time as the engine is under stressed but I have had problems with the suspension which is one of the Monroe 4C systems. The suspension module corroded and needed to be changed and recalibrated.

I gotta find a new car for the winter bc of my new job. They’re paying me more for a car package but it also goes towards gas, for now it’s been nice using my 07 Chevy Malibu with less than 100k miles and runs like a clock I love it. But with the driving I’m doing for work and traveling on the expressway is scary af in bad weather, winter is coming and I’ll still need to get from A to B in snow/rain. I’ve been wanting to get a small awd suv and watching a lot of scotties content, I just have no idea what to do but sit on my hands and use my car now.

Believe it or not the older Hyundai/Kia's are more reliable than the 2016-present models. I drive a 2006 Hyundai Sonata V6 147,000 miles-Only replaced starter and brakes... I also own a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon V6 with 100,000 miles..Only replaced timing belt and radiator...When Hyundai went to Gas Injection engines that's when their engine failures started happening...Alot of late 1990's-2010 Hyundai's still on the road here in California!

@@KayGx No.. Direct Gas Injection engines (GDI) are forcing more fuel and air into the engine chambers causing premature carbon build up and engine problems.

Hyundais are pretty simple unlike something like a bmw so they’re cheap to fix and if you take good care of them they’ll take good care of you but you can’t beat on them like a Toyota.

Scotty you need to make a video of each type of car from mini hatch to suv from years 2015 to 2021 which are your favourite and are very reliable engine wise build wise etc. This would be fantastic video..

Scotty, I'm driving my 2010 Honda Accord 4cyl 4 Dr Sedan and loving it. There have been no issues outside of normal maintenance, but I'm thinking of possible getting a 2022/2023 Honda Civic 4Dr Sedan. My 2010 Honda Accord currently has 78,000 miles on it. Would you recommend I get the new Honda Civic or keep the Honda Accord and have it checked to ensure nothing bad happens to the engine/drive train? Always enjoy watching your videos!

I rented a 2021 Hyundai Kona the other day... It was horrible. uncomfortable seats, incredibly rough/stiff ride. Couldn't believe that a brand new "daily driver" vehicle could be so awful to drive.

Other Hyundais aren't faring well in the ride quality department. My veloster engine is still running at 104K, but man ..the ride is like riding in a wheelbarrow. My wife has a Sonata, which is nice and big, but she complains the seat feels like a wooden stool, so hard. I can see where Hyundai cheaps out when it comes to cars. Suspension.

@@Neanderthal75 Wow good to know, yeah the way you describe the ride on the Veloster, and the seats of the Sonata sounds EXACTLY like the Kona as well. I was on the road for around 6 hours with it and it was baaaaaad haha

I have a 2003 Hyundai Sonata GLS. I bought it with 109 thousand miles on it 4 years ago. I put 12000 miles on it since then and it is still a very reliable and trouble free car.

I bought a manual transmission Hyundai Elantra in 2005 brand new for $12k. I drove it until it had 278k miles on it and the engine was still running good. No oil leaks. Just the Valverde cover gasket. I replaced everything that wore out and it only broke down once while driving (alternator gave me out at about 250k miles). It was a very reliable commuter. I sold it for like $500 since it needed suspension work and the paint was starting to peel in some parts.

Hi Scotty - Thank you for all your videos - I leased a New 2021 Genesis GV80 6 cylinder fully loaded and so far love it except the battery died one day, which the dealer replaced immediately. I haven't had an issue other than that except of course the price but I'm 65 now and wanted a reliable luxury vehicle after owning a GM vehicle that I constantly spent money on. I was told not to get the 2.5 litre GV80 only the 6 Cylinder In your opinion, what do you think of this vehicle. I did research before leasing it last July and Car and Driver rated it 10 out 0f 10 (at that time ). What do you think should I buy it out in the 3rd year ? Always appreciated for anything you can find out. Regards Graham
