I was a teenager working in a garage after school in the 1970’s and “double-gasketed” one car. It was a 1966 Pontiac with a 389, I believe, that held six quarts of oil plus one more with the filter. I poured all that oil in and checked the dipstick and couldn’t see any oil, so, I added an eighth quart. When that didn’t show up, I looked under the car to see eight quarts of Mobil 1 on the floor and running into the drain. Mobil 1 was new at the time and very expensive (I think it was around $3/quart compared to about $.50 for regular oil). Nonetheless, I learned the importance of wiping the metal where the gasket seats in order to make sure the new filter seats properly. The owner of the garage, a great guy, didn’t make me pay for the oil. I learned so much by working at that garage including how to deal with people and problem solving in addition to how to do my own repairs - skills that are invaluable throughout life. Young people would be well-served to work around cars with knowledgeable people.

Oil change tips for people who care about their engines: 1. Don't double-gasket 2. Pre-fill the filter as much as possible (sometimes not possible) 3. Buy a quality filter (Wix, Motorcraft, Napa Gold, etc) 4. Light layer of oil on the new gasket 5. Use good oil (Valvoline, Motorcraft, Napa, etc) 6. Use Full Synthetic or Synthetic Blend. Luckily I always do a test crank (for checking final fluid level) and was taught by my father to always watch for leaks at the oil plug & filter in case they arent tightened down fully. Still had a huge mess and wasted at least $10 worth of oil, but there was no engine damage and now I instinctively put a hand on the filter mount and put eyes on the old filter o-ring. Very true, have seen this happen before at certain work shops, and yes I've had it happen to myself also. As a newbie you are more cautious and pay more attention. After years of doing oil changes and more you can easily forget a step or two cause in your own mind you think, I did it and I know I did right. Really, that kind of confidence is good but can bite you in the end specially if you happen miss one of one these critical steps. Most likely in a driveway or shop if it happens there you might get in to a heap of trouble but at least you have a chance to save the engine, minus all the oil spill and embarrassment. But if it's not spotted then and you get in to a car for a road test and it leaks it all out while driving and you blow the engine up cause the engines crank bearings overheat from loss of oil, be prepared to buy the customer a new engine or need get a new job. OUCH !!!

Great tip even though you should figure it out pretty quick when it's leaking oil all over the place. I've worked in Auto Parts around 15yrs or so and I've heard of this happening way more than once. Also make sure your drain plug is tight/snug(don't over tighten tho) then check for any leaks underneath after you fill it with oil. I had an NTB Tire we use to deal with not tighten a drain plug enough(probably only hand tight I'm assuming). The customer drove it around not knowing it was leaking pretty bad until the oil light came on. She had driven 30 mins away or so to the city after she left and decided to drive it straight back to NTB since she knew they obviously screwed something up. She made it somehow but her engine was ticking like a clock. I was told this after another NTB employee (who didn't work on it) told me abought it after asking me for a GALLON of Lucas Oil Stabilizer to try to save her engine(don't do this EVER btw unless it's a last ditch effort like this case I guess). I suppose what I'm getting at is whether you do it yourself or have it done somewhere (especially chain oil change places) make sure you pull over and check for any leaks before leaving. PS: I hope NTB has good insurance lol.

I see this about 5% of the time I'm doing an oil change service, likely due to the installer cleaning off the mounting surface but *not* applying oil to the new gasket. Done thousands of oil changes and not once have I had one of my filters leave the gasket behind upon removal. Also helps if you don't overtighten the ever loving crap out of the new filter. Some of them I could swear were installed by a competition bodybuilder.
