My dads 1982 had 465k before he sold it about 10 years ago. It was mint until it was broken into twice. 1 owner never rebuilt. He drove to and from the city every day almost an hour each way. Went through 3 clutches. The 3rd time he figured he'd have the trans rebuilt too and the guy he took it to said no it was still like a new transmission after all those years. Those old trucks could be unlocked with a butter knife in the window and that's about their only downfall lol

Got up to 188,000 miles and then it failed inspection due to a rusty chassis. Gave it away to a friend who intended to take it to Bulgaria and use it solely for offroading.

My uncle had a 1996 4 Runner and at one point it sat for 3 years collecting dust and cobwebs, the engine didn't even turn over once during that time. He sold it and the guy who bought it just changed the fuel filter and battery and it started right up and he drove it home. The 4 Runner's build quality can be attributed to it still being manufactured in Japan.

Then a few other things that weren't necessary but I did anyways including sway bar bushings, shifter bushings, Tacoma antenna (old retractable one was broken), external transmission oil cooler. Prior owner had done the alternator and installed a new radiator. If it's a 4WD you should bypass the tranny oil cooler in the radiator and install an external one, factory one has a nasty habit of corroding/cracking and mixing coolant with tranny fluid which will destroy your transmission.

I changed the brushes on the alternator so I'm still with the original alternator. The original clutch was finally changed last year since I was planning on driving around Las Vegas and then up to Yellowstone for a vacation. travel78 the GX and the 4Runner share the same platform, the gx is just the really luxurious version of it. But frame and suspension wise they are the same. The downside with the GX in my opinion in the long term ownership side is the air suspension. Although it’s not super expensive to replace, I like the simplicity of having Regular shock absorbers that aren’t even expensive to replace especially from the dealer. I have an 03’ bought it with 145k on the clock. Still had the original suspension in place, shocks, struts, springs, control arms. All worn with the mileage and still had an amazingly smooth ride. Just recently I decided to replace everything. Just to be on the safe side, with ball joints. Replaced my springs, shocks, and both upper and lower control arms. The truck rides like it’s brand new at 160k.

Air compressor went out, shocks replaced (well, that wasn't so bad), too much play in the transfer case, cracked dash, trim panel cloth adhesive failing. 405HP is nice, and it's a tank - a very good thing in Dallas traffic. But, I'd rather drive my 4Runner any day of the week. It's also, surprisingly, more useful for hauling large amounts of stuff without having to remove seats and protect the nav screen with whatever you can find.

I agree with almost everything except for the frames. 3rd gen 4Runners and 1st gen Tacomas had some of the worst rust protection. Even if you cleaned your frame like you should, the faulty ones would still rust out from the inside. In fairness, I’ve had four 3rd gen 4runners and two 1st gen Tacomas. My 2000 Tacoma had a defective frame - could stick a pocket knife through it. Body was rust free and so was the frame, at least on the outside....

Me on the other hand I took a risk and bought a 2002 limited with 240,000 miles for $2300. 15 thousand miles later I honestly feel like I cheated the market. Thing runs just as well if not better than my 97 which had 115k on it when it got totaled

My 2007 runner is a V6 4WD base model, rare no sunroof model, lighter and better headroom . Sunroofs are trash. It had no trailer hitch so never towed anything. 113k miles. Best vehicle ever conceived.

I’m happily driving around in a 2003 SR5 with the V8 that’s been passed down from Grama, to Mom and finally down to me ❤️ Really don’t think there’s anything that I don’t like about this truck! It performs just like it did when I started learning how to drive in it, and even with close to 295k on the clock now, the quality is so top notch.. there are absolutely no squeaks/rattles or shimmies to speak of. I’m really impressed the most with the trucks rock solid powertrain, though! I follow Toyota’s recommendation with only using 91 grade fuel and for an almost 20 year old V8, 20mpg in mixed driving is totally fine by me! That ‘ol 2UZ motor still has gobs of torque on tap & the 5spd auto continues to shift effortlessly!! Yeah, unless the worlds fuel supplies dry up or the thing (god forbid) gets totaled, I’ll be driving my beloved Beige Betty ‘til I’m a little old man 😆❤️

The reason for this is because the Japanese are honest and don't participate in the corporate practice of "planned obselesence" (ie purposely engineering things to fall apart after a certain amount of time so you will be forced to buy something else).

As long as you got a 4 liter V6 you have a chain. I am hoping 4runners never have the 3.5 like they have in the tacomas because you have to rev it higher to get the HP and....it has a belt.
