The set up for the show is that it’s post apocalypse world. They refer to Mushroom Wars a lot which is a nuclear war that raged. Fin is one of the last humans. Marceline and Simon (ice king) have a few episodes explaining quite a bit

Adventure time ended up being pretty lore focused in the back half of it (mostly post season 3, after the ice kings backstory was revealed) and theres currently 2 spin offs with more content on the way. The spin offs are distant lands, 4 episodes that are about 40 minutes long each, and fionna and cake, which is currently 1 season with 10 episodes around 20 to 30 mins each. Fionna and cake is rated tv14 which means they show considerably more stuff, but its also Incredibly lore heavy. It is not kind to beginners.

I watched it growing up, and when Fiona and cake was coming out, I went back through and re-watched the entire show, the second half of the show I had never even seen. Then obviously, I watched the distant lands spinoff in the new show. I’m always excited for when new stuff comes out because it’s actually a really good show. After about season three or four, it doesn’t even seem like a kid show most of the time😂
