If you look at all of Odin's children, the main villain and cause of all the issues of Thor, Loki and Hela all seem to originate from Odin's terrible parenting skills. If you really believe the MCU version of Norse mythology, I suggest you read the Poetic Edda instead. The MCU screwed the Norse mythology. Something that always stuck with me, and made me sympathize with Loki is taking into consideration all the interactions between Loki and Asgardians outside of his family. He is a Prince, a member of the royal family, and yet in multiple scenes we've seen people --who he technically outranks-- openly disrespect him. Thinking about the message that sends... that these people think so little of him that the fact that he is their Prince... doesn't matter to them. There is no way they could've done that to Thor, or Odin, or Frigga. But Loki is, for some reason, not awarded the same respect
@michaelthornton4506
@michaelthornton4506 2 жыл бұрын
@Fernando Martins In the first Thor movie, there's a few scenes where Thor's friends are disrespectful towards Loki (particularly Volstagg making fun of him before they go to Jotunheim and Hogun insinuating that Loki's a traitor with little evidence. There's even a deleted scene that shows an Asgardian servant openly showing disdain for Loki), but the biggest example would be when Loki takes over in Odin's place during the Odinsleep. As the remaining son, Loki would be in line for the acting ruler of Asgard and thus his place as King would be legitimate (which is confirmed in a deleted scene with Frigga). However, Thor's friends see it as a power grab and directly disobey Loki by going down to Earth to look for Thor.

@theadaunicorn
@theadaunicorn Жыл бұрын
@@michaelthornton4506 see, you say that, but Loki is an antagonist to the majority of the characters throughout the majority of his appearances. Yes, they were disrespectful, but not without reason. We know that Loki taking over during the Odinsleep was, in essence, a power grab. Yes, he was the rightful heir, but we also know he was actively working against Thor's return, and putting a hit on his father's head to ensure he maintained the throne. We know that he did let the Jotunheims into Asgard, and thus it was appropriate for Hogun to insinuate Loki was the traitor. He was the traitor in the end, even if there wasn't active evidence to support it. I adore Loki, and I think it was entirely the TVA's fault that he behaved that way, over and over and over. That does not mean that he was not also technically in the wrong.

Actually, in the earliest representation of Loki we have in mythology, Loki is more of a good guy than most other gods. He's always cleaning up after their messes, and the other gods imprisoned his three children (seriously wtf) because of the prophecy of Ragnarok, which of course was ACTUALLY what made them angry enough to cause Ragnarok. Classic case of trying to prevent a prophecy, and accidentally causing it instead. (The three children are Hel, Fenrir, and the world serpent. In the story, Fenrir is actually the most powerful of the three, not Hel) (Hel = Hela btw, they probably made her Odin's daughter because it's a plot that makes more sense in the movie. Also for those who don't know, Fenrir is the big bad wolf that was Hela's pet.)

In the comics after Loki and Thor were already in good terms, Loki became the ruler of Jotunheim and actually did his job way too well that there was no problem to take care of (compare to Asgard that has constant invasions when the frost giants are supposed to be the violent war mongering ones) Loki got really bored so he made a giant snowman called Frost who easily ate Nightmare who came to invade the realm minutes later. He’s so good at his job that Loki can go on adventures without having to worry. Like he’s such a good ruler that his kingdom never have to be under threat so he made a perfect successor, these are already than Odin had done.

Honestly that very well might be the case. Up until now in the mcu everything was supposed to happen according to Kang. Loki is never meant to get the adoration of Odin, otherwise a nexus event occurs. I do see a problem with this video though. If that variant of Odin is allowed to exist, would Loki even grow up with the same set of characteristics and Ideologies as what ScreenCrush describes as the perfect Loki? All of the "choices" that Loki made up until now built the character that he is. If he were to make other choices it would build his character differently. @@mini9503 in the first Edda Loki was portrayed as the good guy, as a reimagined Jesus of sorts. The Edda was written when Christianity was already present in the Norse and so it had to be in terms with Christian beliefs. So Loki was the scapegoat, he was always used by the other gods to make problems dissappear and he was father to hela, the world Serpent and fenrir. Those children of his would bring ragnarok, a new beginning for the world wiping it from its sins (only the pure hearted survived) similar to the genesis flood. Another thing would be that his children were not evil but traited as evil by the other gods from the get go. Fenrir played with the gods and was just a good boy, but they chained him away and betrayed him, hela was cast into the underworld. So if you read the Edda the gods are sinful and pretty much evil in some cases.

@UThink UCan which is why Kang was right the ONLY alternative to multiversal war is Loki, the only person who can understand all sides, to take over the role that(no matter what) he will be sent to anyway. The only logical choice is to take the 'throne' of the place that would rule over him anyway. He likely would have focused on eliminating Kangs and other REAL threats and put real thought into other variant realities. The one foil to it all is the role of the leader itself. The role of the leader forces you to make difficult choices that may not be fair to all, which means the best leaders are not necessarily the most trustworthy. Because he isn't truthworthy and leadship relies on some narcissism he get lost in a relationship with ironically himself in Sylvie. However the main foil is that if you cannot be trusted the other aspect to that is not being able to trust. Its where we see the TVA loki vs Sylvie fight as a thematic fight over two sides of the same coin. Leading to killing Kang and the starting of the multiversal wars much like Odin doing wars of his own. The circle continues.

Your points are well thought out and fun to listen to, but I think you made a big flawed leap in logic. Assuming that the experiences that created the Loki we know, we don't know what he would have been like had Odin been a different/better father and give him hugs n whatnot... had he grown up in those experiences he [just as likely] may not have the view of the world this Loki does, like his understanding of the criminal underground, the secret entrances n knowledge of the underprivaleged, [not the word you used, but you get my point] the ideal Loki you refer to being the ideal ruler/protector of Asgard likely wouldnt have been created being raised by Odin in a different way.

I agree with most everything you’ve said! But a couple of points: 1) We don’t know that Loki faked his death in the first Thor movie. It is more in character for him to have let go because he saw no other option and then took advantage of the situation he found himself in afterwards. 2) We don’t know that he is the one who found Thanos. It seems just as likely that Thanos found him since the destruction of the bifrost created some form of split in the space below Asgard while it fell. 3) Loki’s alliance with Thanos seemed very one sided and since we do know that the mind stone was effecting Loki during Avengers, there is some room for interpretation of that relationship. These three points lead us to a different set up within the movies. Loki fell and met Thanos. Loki took advantage of this meeting to form an alliance or was coerced into an alliance with Thanos. Loki, knowing about the infinity stones, put up a good fight but ultimately lost Thanos two of the infinity stones on purpose. Knowing of Thanos’s desire for the stones, Loki was then in a good spot to protect the stones he already knew the location of and to search for and protect the stones he didn’t know about. By being returned to Asgard, he could manipulate his way to freedom and he would be protected from Thanos. During Ragnarok when Thor begins accusing Loki of leaving the nine in chaos, we see Loki’s ego on full display. However, it’s also obvious that Loki has been pulling forces out of the other realms and onto Asgard where one infinity stone and the fake gauntlet are kept. He takes time to hide the Aether where he thinks it will be safe and sends Thor to help retrieve the scepter with the Avengers. He also allows Thor to return to Earth where two stones now reside. Throughout these movements, he changes Asgard from a colonizing empire into a protectorate that allows the other realms the freedom to govern themselves. He puts Asgard first and begins to encourage the growth of his realm instead of wasting resources ruling the nine. He also creates a realm strong enough to withstand Thanos and manages to protect at least four infinity stones. So yes, Loki would have made a much better king than Thor if stoking his own ego hadn’t been his defense mechanism against Odin’s neglect and his people’s/friend’s disdain. Also, Thor needed storm breaker because it held the power of the bi frost. To get to Thanos quickly he needed a way to move through space. With Asgard destroyed, that was his only real hope.

one thing i want to point out is that Thor was going through a depressive state. he lost his home, his people, his brother, so many things. when something that horrible happens to someone so fast, they're going to want to turn back to simpler times when things were okay. he's not going to want to keep that growth because it came from that pain. he feels this need to get a new hammer because it's one of the few things that still makes sense and he feels confident in. it wasn't self-pity, it was him going numb and choosing to forget about the things that have happened and the many responsibilities that were dropped in him because of those events.

yeah, i feel it's really harsh on Thor. Thor just lost his people (most of them), turns out he had a blood thirsty sister he didn't know about, he lost his brother (again) and had to watch him die (agai) saving him from someone he was afraid of. (disagee about Loki seeking Thanos out, since Loki was very clearly under the thumb of the Other, and looked very ill for half the Avengers. It could be argued he spent the rest o the time running from Thanos. Where else is safest but Asgard? even if it is in the dungeons ... ) He kept going, he got himself a new weapon which he used alongside his expanded powers. This suggests he instantly knew every nuance there was simply because he realised hes 'not the god of hammers'. But really, he didn't have time. Thanos was coming, and he needed all the help he could get. Then he loses. He never loses. He couldn't avenge his people, so he got depressed. Although it's painted all haha funy, I actually really like it. He's sad, he's lost hope, he's got PTSD, he's falling apart. Thor1 was a tantrum, Endgame is being utterly lost

I think that absolutely right but also, that's after all the decision Thor made (not that he is the guilty one) but he did left his home and decline being a King when most needed. By the time he took the crown it was too late and his kingdom had fallen and was about to fall even more. Basically he lost his army and many peopleto Hela, he then lost his people to Thanos and then the remaining Asgardians got reduce in half due to the snap. As an Asgardian I would do blame the king, because independient of their personal life, my life and my family's depend on a good leader. So... anyway all Asgardians had it tough.

He would lack the drive he had as the second son, and wouldn't have that dark side of him that made him seek out the underworld thus losing out on a lot of his power and knowledge. He felt driven into the shadows to gain an edge on Thor and thus the approval of his father. Take that tremendous drive away, and you have a totally different personally.

This starts in Infinity War already. I very much doubt Thor was aware that half of his people were spared, and he sounds positively insane throughout the movie. He believes Thanos killed ALL of his people, he saw him kill his friend Heimdall and his brother Loki, with whom he recently reconnected, and he sort of shuts down everything except his need for revenge. That's why he doesn't go for the kill; he wants Thanos to suffer. Then in Endgame, with the imminent threat gone and nothing to fight left, he goes into the PTSD and depression.

Why would he bring it up to people that wouldn't understand his pain? He wanted to do the snap! You don't know what he was hoping to ask for. They wouldn't let him. Also, he has a memorial tattoo across his entire back. He hadn't even begun to face what he had lost when we see him in Endgame. Also, everyone grieves differently. Yes, he most certainly cared. This was quite insightful. Loki's character is imperfect yet complex, a total bundle of contradictions which makes him so interesting. When I re-watched the first Thor, (it's probably Tom Hiddleston great acting) but if you'll notice his subtle, visceral expressions, I felt like he really loves his brother Thor and it was proven at the Infinity War when he sacrificed himself. Then after watching the Season 1 of Loki, it was shown that he has also a great love for his mother, making him a really great character in the MCU anyone can relate to - he'll do whatever he can to protect those who matter to him.

This is the rare moment where I side with Odin. When Loki says, "You should have told me what I was," Odin replies, "You're my son." Period. And Loki clearly wants that to be true in that moment, he's just despairing because it's all such a shock. Loki has no connection to the frost giants (who seemingly abandoned him for being too small). In every way that matters, he's as Asgardian, especially after thousands of years.

Couple of things: It's not so much that Sylvie is ruled by her emotions, but that she's under the thrall of her Glorious Purpose, which is to find and eliminate whoever it is behind the TVA. So at the end, she's not capable of choice, of free will, because her aim is controlling her, and she can't see any other action until it's completed. At which point, she's obviously disenchanted, but it's too late. Loki, on the other hand, is fully disenchanted with his Glorious Purpose (to be a king), so he's capable of making a choice. The problem is that he's a blank ("I don't even know what we're doing"), and has no other aim than to support Sylvie - he fights her because he sees that her aim might be as self-destructive as his own was. (Ultimately, despite the decade of destruction we're about to witness, it might be for the best: although the TVA is *a* solution to the problem of the Multiverse, it's not necessarily the best one, and the next time the pair stand here before He Who Remains they may be able to provide a solution to the Multiverse that doesn't involve a fascist bureaucracy. The Kintsuge that the castle is made symbolises that - something that is broken, repaired with gold, that is exalted by its status as a broken and repaired thing.) So, everybody's right! The other thing... a family psychologist whose name eludes me posited that everyone in a family has a job, and that sometimes it's a dirty job (such as carrying ill-will for the rest of the family). Loki's job in that family is to be the villain - note the D.B. Cooper sequence, where Loki commits a hijack not because he wants to, but because Thor and Heimdall think it would be funny. It's his job in the family, and without those expectations he's able to move towards freedom. The fundamental difference between Sylvie and all the other Lokis is that she was free of the expectations of Asgard. So, Asgard: pretty, but no place to raise a child.

The treatment of Thor in Infinity War/Endgame is probably my biggest gripe about those movies. I would imagine schedules and writers and all sorts of other things behind the scenes caused the issue, but Thor just "forgets" all of his growth from Ragnarok. This effects his character in a really negative way but it also frustrated me as an audience member. "He doesn't need a hammer for lightning! And why did they give him a fake eye?!" @@lilchrizzy4554 One of the big themes of Ragnarok was Thor fully growing into the true king of Asgard. Mjolnir was destroyed, he was incapable of beating Hela, and he thought he'd basically lost his powers. During the fight with Hulk, he begins to tap into his real powers. Then during the final fight with Hela, he gets a vision from Odin asking if he's the god of thunder or the god of hammers. After that, Thor can fly, create lightning, and kick all kinds of ass. He can't beat Hela but he can lead his people to safety and a better life. Fast forward to Infinity War and the Guardians find him after Thanos kills half the Asgardians. He gets his eye conveniently restored and he suddenly needs a weapon again. Thor was kicked around a lot in Infinity War and Endgame (he gets overconfident with Thanos and it causes the snap, he gets fat and depressed for comic effect, etc.) and I just thought it took away from his growth in his movie. Not to mention, Thanos killed half of the Asgardians in there as well. This probably caused Thor to abandon the no hammer idea since it failed miserably with Thanos and set out to find a new and better hammer that could finally defeat Thanos. It almost did but he still failed so whatever Thor learned in ragnarok and endgame, it did not work for him and his people so this ultimately made him depressed and sulk around.

I can see how it took a lot of scrutiny to make this video and kudos to you for that! The examples just prove you right so perfectly. Two things I'd like to add: -the bit where Loki cut Lady Sif's hair is directly taken from Mythology: Loki cuts Sif's hair as a prank and it annoys Thor. So Loki promises to give her a golden hair piece crafted by Dwarves..basically they took the inspiration from Norse Mythology -a depiction of Loki being raised as a heir is in the What If series, in the episode about Party Thor (ep 7). He's a fully developed Jotun prince that is good friends with Thor and is a jolly, fun-loving character which he probably would seek if he wasn't constantly pressurized to be better than Thor. THAT Loki, I believe would be a Ravenclaw.

I truly believe that Loki's going to lead the Avengers this time around. Heck, the thought of him saying the "Avengers Assemble" line would probably make the audience erupt in cheers when it happens. And after the big fight he and Slyvie will take their proper place in the TVA to rule over all timelines.

I really like this theory! The only concern I have is that in the "best Loki" scenario wherein he receives the praise and throne as he desire, who's to say he won't turn out as another Thor? The Loki we know is a product of his upbringing. Giving him anything else may fundamentally change his personality and or beliefs. I guess it goes back to the notion of fate. It's hard to change someone's fate. But if you manage to, are you always still that same someone?

Thor as the ceremonial king and Loki as the prime minister. That way Thor can be all over the galaxy doing his thing and Loki can rule day to day. Heimdall keeps an eye on Lokii and if things get out of hand he contacts Thor. Simple as that.

The question would be, would Loki really be the same person if he was an only child. You are assuming that if Loki was an only child he would still know the underbelly of the underworld, but that is not necessarily the case. He would not have the need to know it as he would have much easier life from the start. If he were to be the king you describe he would have to be chosen instead of Thor, who would have to be the same pain for Loki for all his childhood. Hard to say what would become of Thor in that case though.

I was a Loki stan before the Loki show came out. Part of this is because of how Tom portrayed him. Yes he does horrible things but you can tell there are redeeming qualities there as well.

@Elizabeth Bennett yall seem to forget that his character significantly changed after being subject to the TVA’s near-omnipotent power. Imagine thinking you and your kind (Asgardians) were some of the most powerful beings in the universe, only to be completely overshadowed by a bureaucratic time cop police force that uses infinity stones as paper weights. that kind of cosmic restructuring of your entire universe is gonna do a number on your psyche no matter who you are.

Nope. If Thor improved himself and acted like a good son, TVA pruned. If Oden hugged his son, TVA pruned.

I love your perspective! I never thought it like that, even though I would pick Loki over Thor any day (and Tom Hiddleston is such an amazing actor comparing to Hemsworth). I am with you on all points. One thing that I’d have to argue though is that all the gifts Loki has, like “seeing” the people who fell through the cracks etc, it is exactly because of being ignored in the past. Unfortunately he would still have to go through that hurtful childhood in order to become the amazing mind and soul that he is. It’s just the TVA that needs to LEAVE HIM ALONE!!! 😊 Thanks again for the video
