About the ward thing... adoption didn't always exist. Not formal adoption as we think of it today. And people didn't think of kids, especially other people's kids as somebody that you would take in. Wards are basically children that you take in. Usually rich people who can afford them. Either in a good way, you clothe them, educated them, basically rear them. Or in an awful way, take them in and use them as unpaid labor.

Apparently Frank Gorschin, (The Riddler) took his role in the show so seriously that he did lots of exercising getting into such shape that the producers of the show found it difficult to find stunt doubles for him. Now the character is seen as rather a joke that even Robin could beat up.....
