My favorite explanation for the inconsistency of the tech is that Pimm just gave the quickest, easiest explanation Scott/the audience would understand, but it's actually more complicated. Though it wouldn't even have been hard to explain it in a way that fits what we see in the movie: if the suit can do both shrinking the space between atoms and decreasing/increasing the size of said atoms, and this can be done together or swapped at will, then everything works. Which doesn't even technically contradict the idea that they retain their mass, since technically they'd still be made up of the same amount of material.

My least favorite thing about Iron Man 3 is that the blonde extremis subject who captured Rhodey/Iron Patriot when he entered the clothes workshop was forgotten off camera. The movie makes the rounds defeating/destroying all extremis powered bad guys, but she does not appear in any further scenes nor the final battle. Prove me wrong.

One extra line like "you can temporarily restore your normal size weight by pressing the button, it expands the Pym particle field for a moment to allow greater graviton interaction, but you can't use it for too long because it drains too much energy" there all inconsistencies are eliminated. Shrinked items are their shrinked size weight unless you have adiitonal energy to restore the weight for a moment.
