Star Wars is one of the most beloved franchises in the world. But between the first and second movie, when nobody really knew what it was going to be-- they tried to capitalize on the success of A New Hope while working on Empire Strikes Back. That attempt took the form of the Star Wars Holiday Special, a made-for-TV movie that’s set in the Star Wars universe and featured Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Chewbacca’s family. Okay, MOSTLY Chewbacca’s family actually.

The man behind this holiday special is Steve Binder. He is also the man who produced Elvis Presley's 1968 NBC Special, better known as "The Comeback Special," which is widely acclaimed, and credited with helping to revive Elvis's music career. Crazy how he can fall so hard.

I watch this review every few months, and always laugh my ass off at it. Just the best review of that total LSD-trip of a show. I watched it when I was a kid, it wasn't weirder than any other variety show special of the time. In fact, I think even now many musical specials are still cringy. The shocking part for me was to see an unrecognizable Mark Hamill, and the best part was the Boba Fett presentation in the cartoon.

My wife and I found the holiday special on youtube, sometime within the last year I guess, and watched it. We have checked the box. It was not super easy, nor was it barely an inconvenience. It was a painful inconvenient. But, now we can say we have watched it. The cameos were rather interesting. Diahann Carroll, Bea arthur, and the guy I don't remember his name art carney? All three of those celebrities were well known good artists, actors, performers, back in the day. I wonder if any of them wishes he or she had not been in this lol.
