Thanks so much for doing these! Everything looks great with this disc, but that difference at 1:08 kinda concerns me - feels much brighter than the mood of that scene has always conveyed for me..but might be just fine on my LG hopefully
@RESET_-bg7kw25 күн бұрын
haha, I know... I double-checked my VC-1 and UHD BD and it is indeed the actual difference.
@BeberDag13048224 күн бұрын
No, no, it's always been like that ever since 1995. It's the Blu-ray that was way too dark and wrong in so many ways.
@Chrisratata24 күн бұрын
@@BeberDag130482 i get that the bluray was too dark but that HDR still looks bright to the point of changing the entire mood of the scene pretty drastically
@BeberDag13048224 күн бұрын
@@Chrisratata You're just seeing the mood back to what it always was. It's the Blu-ray that changed it, not the other way around. You've just been accustomed to a lie. Not that the scene on the UHD is totally right either. Well that shot is pretty much it, but just before, we're missing the golden hue when Mills is sitting in the back of the police car, and Somerset talking with the captain. Having seen a print 6 times in a recent past (even taking 1100 pictures of it to document the look of the print) and having a 35mm print scan, I can very much tell you it was never that late at night originally in that scene as you've been accustomed to with that failure of a Blu-ray released by Warner in the 2010s.

David Fincher himself was responsible for the HDR accurate mastering so I believe that this scene is exactly how the director intended.

Got the none Steelbook version. Strange packaging. The 4K disc seemed stuck lol. Not watched yet

Great comparisons! Instead of the split screen like it is now I would prefer the same motive on the left and the right (maybe just the middle of the frame). Even greater or maybe as an extra comparison would be an extreme zoom of the same motive in motion. That way we could actually see if the resolution is higher or if the changes are color/contrast only.
@RESET_-bg7kw24 күн бұрын
I don't know but thanks for the suggestion. I like the split screen motion comparison. As for the zooming, I suggest you use the slowpics.com comparisons. You can zoom as much as you want and they are truly lossless 16bit RGB (30mb + per picture)

2:35 As soon as this was announced for 4K, my first thought was: “The flashlights are gonna look sick in HDR.” And I was right. 😂
@RESET_-bg7kw25 күн бұрын
yeah, it's not overly bright, just right. I also like how the shadows are darker.

Can i inject the dv metadata in the the bluray remux or would it result in wrong brightness level?
@RESET_-bg7kw21 күн бұрын
Yes you can, they look like the same brightness. I did that and watched it.

This film has always been a mess in terms of rereleases. There is a very detailed article about all the different versions and the color differences between them. The new one seems substantially brighter but it looks like it is actually closer to the original look.
@BeberDag13048224 күн бұрын
Absolutely. It seems they went back to something closer to the digital color grading they made for the Newline Platinum DVD in the early 2000s that was at the time an attempt at recreating digitally the original CCE bleach by-pass look of Darius Khondji's cinematography. The Blu-ray equivalent of that was the Dutch Blu-ray, not the complete failure Warner released on Blu-ray in the 2010s.
