Sea lion with pups nearby charges toward people on San Diego beach

A sea lion that appeared to be defending its pups charged toward beachgoers in San Diego, video taken in June shows. According to local officials, the area by La Jolla Cove is a popular spot for sea lion mothers to raise their young from May to October.

It's not even just animalistic aggression, they are clearly trying to protect their babies and create distance from what they see as a threat. I can only imagine how horrible and inconsiderate some of the people are. Who knows what that sealion dealt with before lashing out. So tragic how we colonize everywhere and care about nothing except ourselves.

Sorry hun, it’s SHARED “territory”. I grew up in La Jolla, and went to the Cove hundreds of times in a summer as a kid. In my 17 years there, I NEVER saw a sea Lion there. EVER. I don’t care what the writer says…it never was a hang out for them. And yes, these people surrounding the Lions are crazy arsed people.

Imagine how upsetting it would be if crowds of people were allowed to descend into your baby’s nursery everyday, creating noise/disturbances at all hours of the day. That’s what’s happening here. San Diego needs to close that stretch of beach to the public and designate it a wildlife sanctuary.

As a kid, my (single) dad couldn’t afford to take us anywhere that cost money but he did take us there so we could observe the wildlife from up above. People were *NOT* allowed down there back then (early 90s) and stuff like this rarely, if ever, happened!

It used to be their home. The humans ran them off. There’s about 840 miles of coastline for California but the selfish people of La Jolla couldn’t give these animals this minuscule amount of beach for them to relax. They used to feel safe there people were not allowed on that beach, and there were signs that said do not approach the sea lions will bite. Leave the animals alone it’s their home.

The Cove has never been closed for sea lions or seals. Maybe you're thinking of the Children's pool which is sometimes closed off for seals and is located a short walk away. Anyway, looks like stupid tourists

This sheltered swimming area was created by installation of a man-made sea wall and intended as a children's beach. Sea lions sunbathed on the rocks along the coast and calved in other natural spots. People who enjoyed seeing them close-up have now turned this space into a tourist attraction. Predictably, it is not a good fit.

​​@@barbarabirch2101you've just described the "children's pool" where seals rest. The beach in the video is "La Jolla Cove", where the sea lions swim by and people snorkel. Two different beaches with two different animals. Both beaches are a short walk from each other through Scripps park. Btw, sea lions use their front flippers to walk on land while seals have to slide their bodies.

I’m from San Diego and recently visited this location to show visitors from out of town. I was heartbroken to find that this area, La Jolla Children’s Pool, that once was reserved for only sea lions has been overturned and given back to the people to use. Tourists come to see the sea lions there. Not people hanging out on the beach line taking selfies with the sea lions. Now it’s so crowded that the locals still can’t use the space like before when the sea lions inhabited the area. What was the point of getting rid of them. Give this area back to the sea lions!!!

One of the grossest and most baffling things I saw when visiting San Diego were people blatantly ignoring the numerous signs telling people to stay off certain areas of the beach for sea lion mating. They were literally fighting with other people saying ignorant things like, "This beach belongs to people, not animals." This was over 10 years ago and I see things haven't changed. It's very depressing.
