Sea Trial: Farallon 27' with 6BTA 370HP

In this video we take the Farallon out for a spin and find it to be a bit under propped. We look back some of the work done to the boat to get it to this stage, and take her out for a second run with a new prop.

DUDE! I didn't know this had been done before. I've been searching for a while to find if someone did anything similar with no luck, then this randomly pops up in my recommended videos. I found a really nice 27x8' 3 piece mould for a real good deal and I was planning on popping a hull out, widening it to 10' and powering it with a rebuild 12 valve. Super stoked to see someone did it successfully! And now I have a rough idea what I need for a reduction gear and prop! Thanks a bunch you just made my day :) Just one question, what size shaft?

With the Zf63iv set where it is could a 21" dia prop fit; if shaft angle was increased? I was understanding this one is running less than 12deg shaft angle. Also, do you need the rudder set forward like you have it to reduce cavitation? If the rudder is set rear like on a stock farallon do you need a cavitation plate off the transom? Thanks

hmm...what's the rationale behind the no transom? Obviously with the railing, its not for dropping crab traps off the back. One thing if the deck was high like a lobster boat or a full transom with a door to pull in tuna etc, but that looks like it is ready to get swamped in small seas.

That was the customers design, maybe he will chime in and answer. Personal preference. Nice thing about building a boat, you get to make it the way YOU want it.

That’s great! 12 valve ppump Cummins is my pride and joy and to see a brand new one in a boat is just awesome! May I ask the what the timing is on the engine? It seems to like the rpm really well

I like efficiency. Wheel size & pitch does matter. Regardless of Continuous Duty, Timing, and so on...it won't last ripping the crank out of it.

I have 25 farallon 300hp cummins and at 1800 I get 14knts @ 2000rpm I get 16-17 @ 2200rpm I get 19-20 knots I cruz usually between 1800-2000 rpm and the engine is barely working

Nice, yeah he is loving his setup. The Farallon is a nice hull. He caught a swordfish the other day at 1000' depth.

Honestly I am not exactly sure what he planned on using it for but he had his reason. Trolling for something. Lets hear from others in CA who are more skilled anglers than me. What do you guys troll for out here?

Only really need a troll valve to get down to salmon troll speed (2.8-3 kts roughly) or halibut (around 2 kts)

We feel a common mistake people make is to prop for top speed at the cost of long term performance and an optimal load on the engine during cruising speed. In the long run, better off making your HP with a bit more RPM, scrubbing a few knots off the top. It will be happier at all other speeds in the long run. Especially when the bottom is fouled, prop gets dinged, weight is added. Etc...

Prop size is usually determined on WOT RPM. Don't want to over rev your engine and you don't want to bog it down either. On a diesel depending on the setup 1" of pitch creates roughly 50-75 RPM difference
