Another rescue day at Cape Cross. There are no towns or cities or even villages close by, but many seals find themselves entangled in different types of ocean rubbish, often with unknown origin.
This seal found himself choking from a piece of bright white plastic packaging strap around his neck. He was very likely playing with us under water and tried to swim through the loop, only to get stuck in it. As the seal grew, the plastic loop would have gotten tighter and tighter, eventually taking his life.
Luckily the rescuers from Ocean Conservation Namibia were close and quickly grabbed him with the rescue net. A few moment later, the entanglement was cut in half, and the seal was allowed to join his friends again, totally unharmed.
A few seconds of action saved his life. 🦭

Can't believe how tight that strap was in the photo! Must've been on her for a long time. She'll be grateful to have lost it. Every time a line is cut, I imagine how good it must feel to the seals. You can see the the tension release and the body relax. What a slow, painful death for many seals that are undetected. "Death by 1,000 cuts". Watching these videos, I'm riveted to my computer screen. I am soooo grateful for every capture and release by the Seal Whisperers. Nothing stops them. Words are inadequate to express my true gratitude. IMHO, it doesn't get better than this.

Well to be fair, he stepped on one right before he catches the seal, got at least his fin under one foot. 😅 But I guess that isn't harmfull for the seals at all so... 🤗 What wonders me more is: they are extremely careful with a netted seal where one person is riding it's back, another one is pinning down it's head and they are wearing expansive work gloves because the seal could bite, but then you see them often running in shorts through this field of seals, their mouthes and teeth left right and center. 🤔

My morning dose of OCN rescuing a beautiful seal makes my day. Sometimes I get to watch it before I go to bed at around midnight but mostly it starts my day off. At least I know my small donation can help you guys and the wonderful work you do. Please everyone please consider opening up a patreon account for even just a small amount to help these wonderful people out. They are making a difference but without our help it wouldn't be possible. The more we donate the more seals are saved from a certain painful horrible death. So many of these loops seem to be deliberately tied to make them into death traps for the poor seals. is it fishermen who don't want competition? I don't live near a seal colony but I make sure that I cut up discarded dental floss, string or rubber bands so that they don't trap birds and other small creatures when they go to landfill. I also cut the hard plastic rings that are part of bottle tops- pill bottles, milk bottles, sealable bottles of all kinds - because they can trap birds and lizards, the unnoticed small creatures that also suffer from our actions.

@@Snookyooz -- GOOD for YOU!!! I'd never really thought about the rings that are left on bottles after you remove the lid (pop bottles, power-aids drinks, etc.) until I read something a couple of years ago that said those rings were getting caught on bottle-nosed dolphins'snouts and the poor dolphins were starving and drowning. I now remove them and have a cache stored up -- I'm going to melt them down and pour them into silicone molds and put them in my garden.

This is important to do with hay bale twine and the cotton twine they use on horse, pig, cattle, sheep, chook feed bags. That can tangle around magpies legs, all sorts of native birds' legs, and then it catches on barbed wire, or a twig on a tree and birds dangle, unable to gey free and die of thirst or hunger or are killed by passing cat, fox, whatever. That cotton thread you pull, opening feed bags to put in bins, IS LETHAL. I have saved about 4 magpies, alone.

I cannot help to wonder if the seals are coming to this particular beach just to get these things removed off of them. Also thank you for what you do in rescuing these poor seals and also thank you for sharing this with us so that we may stay alert about what's going on in the world.
