Seal Rescuers Spot Invisible Entanglement

Recapture or not - we simply do not know. Has this seal been rescued before? Is it an old wound? Is there an entanglement that is so thin or deep that we cannot see it anymore, possibly overgrown with skin? The rescuers do not take a chance and capture her. The seal is an excellent and very calm patient and she allows Naude to thoroughly check out the wound. He needs the help of his crocheting hook to really dig in deep: and there it is!!! The rescuers' instinct is right, there is a teeny tiny loop of ultra thin fishing line attached to her neck, ready to take her life. They quickly remove it, and she can start her journey to full recovery. Well done, team! 🦭

The earliest seal rescue I can find is from Ireland 6 years ago. And that was a one off. You are really showing the world what a problem plastic is!

The late Francois Hugo was rescuing and rehabilitating seals in South Africa in the 90s. There is a little bit online, should be more. He was the original "Seal Whisperer".

The knot on that loop of fishing line irritated the seal's skin and caused infection that left the 5mm opening that Naude was able to investigate with the crochet hook (ouch!) The only time a knotted line is good news for a seal.... Good work!🦭👍👏

Just when I think you have learned everything there is to learn in order to service the seals, you guys reach into a crochet kit and pull out another useful tool...evidenced by an overgrown thin fishing line! Persistence pays off for this puppy; the bigger he got, the deeper the cut would have been without your 'knit 1, pearl 2' intervention. Well done guys!

Wow, Naude thank goodness you took your glove off to feel the wound. Such a small gap proved to be this seals saving grace because now you've saved her from potentially dying a slow horrible death due to infection. She was a very good patient which was nice too. Great for Naude for really digging deeper to find that invisible fishing line and total shame on the ignorant fishermen who leave those in the oceans. I am sure that seal was in so much pain but now is free to get that deep wound healed.

After watching that on my phone, I watched it on my TV. What a difference! To see a massive herd of seals on a big screen is almost surreal! But I wanted to see clearly, what Naude was doing in that seals open wound. That was an astounding rescue on all fronts. Single fishing lines are the worst of the WORST! Death By 1,000 Cuts!! When he found that line with his crochet hook, I felt soooo happy and relieved for that seal. Omg.... Naude, I could sense your determination, perseverance, and complete joy, from here. They've developed that "Little Voice" - *_knowing_* there's a foreign body there even when it defies their "normal" senses. So glad they've added handy bits to their arsenal to accommodate that Voice! So sorry they've _had_ to. Great rescue, guys!
