Our rescue excursions up the Skeleton Coast take us to seal colonies that are hundreds of miles away from formal human settlements. Many of those seals in the video would never even have encountered a human being before - but they surely have to deal with our rubbish! Like most other plastic rubbish in the ocean, packing straps like this black strap do not biodegrade. Plastic can take centuries to break down. The strap was not new, a clear sign that he picked up this entanglement weeks or months after it was disposed of into the ocean. These animals do not only have to deal with new plastic rubbish and current or future littering, they also have to deal with rubbish from many years ago. They are not safe anywhere.

With the seals up at Torra Bay having so little experience with human contact I just wonder what that little seal must have thought when captured. “You want your plastic strap back? You are welcome to this piece of garbage, I have almost outgrown it already” Well done gentlemen and a good start for your trip 🦭🌊💙

Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year. We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

Slowly (kinda), but definitely surely, OCN has grown. From just basically Naude and, I think, Tony, until it is what it is now! One seal at a time (usually), and now a fully funded and very knowledgeable and experienced full-time occupation. What an experience from just a humane act while out earning a living from canoe guides! (And I may be wrong.. .but I am so happy that OCN has evolved into what it has now become!

Hi all! “You’re clean! No, you’re not clean! But now you’re clean!” It’s wonderful when, even if nothing is visible on the seal’s neck, it will still be checked, no matter how big or small it is, but it will run to the water without a fatal noose. Thanks guys! Today is April 11, 2024. This amazing channel has 1.91 million subscribers (Hurray, 10,000 subscribed this week... We are waiting for another 90,000!). Subscribe if you haven't already. The end message: "The global recycling capacity is simply insufficient to handle the annual production of single-use plastics." It wouldn't be, if the plastics manufacturers that caused this mass production would take recycling seriously. What can be done to achieve this? How can they be induced to recycle instead of manufacturing?
@OceanConservationNamibia
@OceanConservationNamibia 23 күн бұрын
In our recycling campaign, we shared that the recycling process itself is expensive and resource-intensive. Therefore, it is usually much cheaper for manufacturers to produce new plastics compared to recycling old plastics into new ones, especially if oil prices are low. Instead of only considering their bottom line, we need organizations to start caring about how their actions affect the environment. This way, they will opt for more recyclable products that can be easily recycled and reused over and over. Read More: www.ocnamibia.org/plastic-crisis-is-recycling-the-answer
@marigeobrien
@marigeobrien 17 күн бұрын
@@OceanConservationNamibia Easier, yes, but unethical. And, IMHO, if they had the incentive (as they should) they would find a cheaper and easier way to recycle. The truth is, they have no motivation to do the right thing. And it's killing all of us. It's killing the seals, yes, but it's killing people, too. I apologize if I sound angry. Please understand I am only angry at the situation. I think all you do is amazing. I only wish I could do more to help.
