Channa! Can you make a video about what movies/scenes/songs you like to test speakers with? I have heard you mention "A Quiet Place," and the Red Circle scene from "John Wick 1". We trust your advice. Maybe a top 5 songs/Top 5 scenes, and then mention what you are listening for for each one?

Having owned both sealed and ported, I believe the sealed for music and ported for movies expression is pretty accurate. The ported will give you that much more for your explosions and action movie moments. The sealed sounds so much tighter for music and less explosive for movies. They both work either way but each does seem to do one thing a little better. That's how I'd go, depending on what I want a sub for. I think duals can be mixed though. I have that now and it gives the best of both worlds.

However larger sealed boxes can hit hard in low frequencies and are extremely good in films, I know this because I've built different sealed enclosures large and small.

Ported subs being "slow" is a myth. AS long as the sub is tuned properly and has low group delay, it will not be any less accurate than a sealed sub. The "slow" sound is usually a problem with controlling room modes or getting a badly designed ported sub more than a problem with ported designs in general. see: www.audioholics.com/loudspeaker-design/sealed-vs-ported-subwoofers

Would you say that at lower budgets, it is in fact the case that sealed subs are "faster"? Again there may be exceptions, but is it a "more common" situation?
@xanderguldie
@xanderguldie 4 жыл бұрын
Physics-wise that doesn't make sense as the woofer should react faster due to the pressure of the box. Also the best responding subwoofers are servo controlled.

Yet, the most spectacular moments that are going to make a difference between a good and a great experience are exactly the visceral moments you're talking about. Think dinosaur steps in Jurassic Park, etc. Not sure you can actually tell the difference in terms of musicality between a good sealed sub and a good ported one. Just my 2 cents !

I had 4 - 12" (sealed) 1000 watt rms subs in my 4Runner back in the mid 2000's, and I had the amps and capacitors to push them. I was able to achieve insane amounts of hair raising rumble while still keeping clean, tight bass. The problem with pushing that much sealed power (at higher volumes) inside a car is that I thought my eardrums were literally going to burst. I've sat inside some ported demo cars and found it much easier on my eardrums while still being able to feel it raise my hair. As for my home, I'm in a guest house so I'm still content with my older 10" ported Velodyne sub.

Techno Dad My dedicated theater is 20x18x10. I have never heard an SVS sub in person. Assuming cost isn’t an issue and going with dual ported, what size would you recommend without it being ridiculous overkill? I’ve been reading good things about the new PB3000’s but I am willing to go bigger if there’s an appreciable difference on an upgrade.

Hi Chris, great question! I would go with as much as you can afford. Dual SB16s might be a good fit for your room since it's 3500 cubic feet. Here's what mike said above, "I’ve owned dual ported subs for 20 years. Until now. I now have dual SB16 Ultra’s and they sound a perform better than any of my previous ported subs. Property calibrated with my Denon X8500H I’m finding that I’m now listening to more music again, as before I never listened to music in our dedicated home theatre. I’m still easily able to reach sub 20hz with my SB16’s and that’s just fine for me. I’ve never heard a sealed sub that can achieve the same SPL’s for movies in particular that what my SB16’s can. Because of this, I am also now able to put them in their best listening positions unlike before with my previous ported subs due to their footprint, and not taking up as much precious real estate within my home theatre. The SVS SB16 ULTRA’S are a win win for my personal use!" Hope that helps!

I've built several speaker cabinets, including a 2x15 front-facing rear-loaded folded horn for my old bass amp, sealed and bass reflex cabs with 15s and 12s for stereo. The 15s in mynas setup had 18 lb magnet structures, and could get very loud without much wattage, I always thought that a small, sealed enclosure (not true infinite baffle) would have a smooth roll-off as the bass put more pressure on the air in the cabinet, and that a port would get deeper, but have a sudden drop if the bass was too deep. I thought the transient response was more related to the power of the magnet and size of the voice coil along with proper port design, however, I can't argue with a spec sheet on a sealed subwoofer that goes down to 20 Hz +- 3 dB. I play and listen to music with a 5-string bass with a low B, which I guess is about 31 Hz. I can't hear below about 28 Hz (I tested it with a program and headphones that go from 5 - 35k +- 3dB. I'm not young, and considering I've played and listened to very loud music, my hearing tops off at about 15k, though less compression in the music tends to add spatial dimension to the sound to my ear. I listen mainly to hard rock and metal.I would like to check out some of my music with sealed and ported subs to see if I can hear the difference. I don't play video games or listen to movies loud.I'm thinking of getting pair of SVS 1000s. The sealed ones could keep my 12" 3-way systems sitting on them while keeping the tweeters aligned with my ears, while the ported ones would rain them a bit high. I suppose I could put them on the inside of my current speakers. BTW, good video.

Large 12" sealed sub than gets down to 20hz with 500 to 1000 watts. Plenty loud, plenty accurate and you only need 1cuft of airspace usually. I use the Image Dynamics IDQ12 with a bash 500w plate amplifier. Plenty loud and gets low.

I am in the process of redoing/finishing my basement. I ran cables specifically for a 7.2.4 setup. However my downfalls are a short ceiling height (under 8 feet) and that one side has the staircase and is open on both sides to the rest of the basement. I am not just there yet to buy, but the SVS 16 Ultra's caught my eye. I just wish I could find a place to listen to these much higher end subs before just randomly buying them when I am ready. Not only do I need to finish the floor and paint, but I need HDMI 2.1 and eARC to come out before I can even buy a TV.

@@voodoo9077 I had a def tech pro 800 sub. Decent sub....The SB 3000 is on a whole other level. I have never experienced bass like that before. It's absolutely incredible for movies. Very clean bass that can go so low in frequency that you may not hear it but you feel it in your chest. It performs so well that it is very comparable to their award winning 4000 series but for a lot less money. The sb3000 is a very impressive sub and definitely worth checking out. When SVS asked for feedback on it people responded with worry that it was so good it would negatively effect their 4000 series sales. But SVS has come out and said that if it means more people can experience their subs because it is more affordable then they're ok with the loss in 4000 sales.

Well put bro! I would add that sealed subs are strongest in the low teen hz as they have a more flat response that doesn't taper as much on the graphs but can never be felt as loud as a ported sub with the same wattage, as you said. Also the svs ported subs are tuned to boost that sweet 17-22 hz area that is most common in movies or rap, which is where it really counts for me! The SVS ported subs are also very tight due to the large driver simulating the resistance the woofer would have with a sealed box. The SVS 3000 series is a new breakthrough in that technology. Yay!

Yea i kinda do believe in that "sb for music, pb for movies" thing. For the last ten yrs when i first got into H.T. Ive always had a klipsch brand set up with two 200wrms 10 ported subs sw450 i believe they are called and they never disappointed in any way, movies and music both sounded great. Up until this past yr when i finally decided to upgrade i first went with a pair of svs sb 12nsd's, and good thing for that 45 day trial cause no matter what i did in adjustments, they never sounded anywhere as good as my older "weaker" subs. Svs at 400wrms vs sw450 at 200wrms. I returned them before the trial was up and luckily for me the thx monolith's by monoprice went on sale and actually for about $100 less i was able to get dual 500wrms ported subs, and these boys are tanks! U can convert them to "sealed" with plugs and a quick tuning, but to me ported sounds awesome for both movies and music. I like the older rap music and it doesn't have that electronic bass like today's does. I also listen to rock,metal etc... I rediscovered NIN on a whole nother level thanks to these subs! I say get a ported sub that also has a sealed tuning feature. Or get a one of those subs that have a passive radiator, about the same size as a sealed but sound deeper thanks to the radiator. They are pricier though!

In a nutshell: Theoretically you can but in practice you'll find that it doesn't sound very good and doesn't have a good frequency band because the Chassis volume is finely tuned to the driver and ported subs need different volumes than sealed ones.

Ported subs that aren't designed to have a sealed mode won't sound very good if you plug the port. However, if your ported sub has a sealed mode and is designed to be able to be plugged, it'll become a sealed sub and will sound good. I've owned both the svs sb and pb 2000 pro and the pb once plugged sounds identical to the sb. Get a ported sub that has a built in sealed mode in the dsp and you get the best of both worlds

By the way great video. I think from my experience, is that before you even get to what type, is how large is the space. I know that sounds amature, but I see a lot of people getting 15" subs for 1000 cubic feet rooms or 12" for 4000 cubic feet. Or the solution is if I add another sub it will just fix the problem. If you have a room that clearly needs a 15" sub, one 15" will sound better than (2) 12". Sure 2 will help even if it out, but from your sweet spot seat, that 15" will still move more air in that space.

No problem getting a sub that's great for both music and movies. A sub for music should go as deep as possible just as with music. Most important is that the sub has a really fast responce. So stay away from the really cheap ones. But a ported sub does not necceseraly need to be huge and a closed one is not necceseraly small. It all depends of the tuning etc. A closed construction can pump out as much bass and "rumble" as a ported one if it's built right and maybe even have a slightly larger box. And both needs alot of power to react quick as f*** and produce bass correctly. But a closed one always needs more power.

hey hey! great vid as always! i am wondering if you could do a video on the how to's of crossovers and lfe's and all the settings you would need to pay attention to and consider when telling your avr when to kick sound signal to the sub and when to leave it on your mains. also, if there is a video hidden somewhere on your channel, i'd love to be pointed in the right direction! i have a sub that is as old as it was cheap and never looked back mostly because i was always able to shake the earth with it. its an old old magnavox that came with a 5.1 "in the box-plug and play" system from like 2000 haha. but i am not sure where to go on my upgrade. this video helped a lot and i will watch your other video on how to choose a sub, but i know once i do i'll need a bit more background on how to configure it to best go with 5.2(hopefully and fingers crossed!).4 system. Thanks!!

Build your own sub to save money. Image Dynamics IDQv4 12 is $179. A box costs about $30 in materials to build. A 500w plate BASH class D amp is $249 from Parts Express. Costs less than anything from SVS, Klipsch. And you are able to make your own sealed setup. Most home audio subs are ported. Want a monster setup? Buy a big SPL sub like a Sundown, SKAR, SoundQubed etc. Use a ported box and then a Crown or Berringer external Class D amp. 1000+ watts for way less than a SVS.

Hi tecno dad I have an onkyo receiver TXRZ 720 7.1 channel, a fluance bipolar surround speaker HFBP, 8 ohms 30-120w, and fluance tower speaker XL7F 8 ohms 80-200w. When I checked on the internet it said the onkyo reciever is able to go 8 ohms 110w per channel, 6 ohms 225w per channel, but why doesn't it show 8 ohms when I go to the settings because it only show 4 ohms and 6 ohms. next if I go 6 ohms 225w per channel and put volume on high, could it damage my surround/ tower speakers or receiver? If I want to add ceiling speakers can I connect them to my rear surround speakers through a series connection?

Hi Techno Dad. I've been a member for a while and I really enjoy your videos. I've learnt so much from them down to the nitty gritty. I'm setting up my home cinema, I've got the 3020i front, 3090Ci and 3010i for rear. Ive decided to go with sealed subwoofer. As I listen to music and movies 50/50. Im stuck between 2 models, SVS Sb 2000 or REL ht1205. I've read great reviews about both, but I know you own the Predator 15", and that drew me towards the REL. The 15 is a bit out of my budget, so it's between the 12" and SB2000. Really appreciate any advice. Thanks, Sukh, London

Hi Fred! I would go with dual 12" subwoofers for that room as you have just about 2500 cubic feet. I would try to draw out where you would place everything in the room. That way you can get an idea of where everything will be. I would go with a 5.2.4 Atmos setup as I don't know if you'll want surround back channels, but you should have room for a 7.2.4 configuration. But that's up to you, you know? Figure out where you couches would go, and how many there are. Also think where you would put the equipment. Do you want to have an equipment closet or is everything going to be out in front of you? Just think about it, should be pretty easy. You can also email me to get more detail: technodad55 at gmail.
