Most mattress chain stores don't use these Sealy model designations, but have custom names to confuse customers on the specs. It is a bizarre business model, since you don't really understand the differences in construction between mattress models, and don't really know what you are getting.
@goodbed

Hi there -- Thanks for your comment. We call that the mattress name game. The name game has been the norm in the past and is still sometimes the case today. However it is MUCH less common than it was 10 years ago. For example, almost all of Sealy's products from the middle of their line and up are a national line that uses the same model names in every retailer (with Mattress Firm being a notable exception), leaving only their least expensive models subject to the name game shenanigans. The same is true for Beautyrest and Serta. Meanwhile, Tempur-Pedic and Stearns & Foster both use the same names in all retailers throughout their entire line. So the good news is that after years of having to deal with the name game, things are finally looking up for mattress shoppers on this front. I hope that's helpful.

I was told that "Extra Firm" is so hard, I 'may as well sleep on the floor' - thoughts?
@goodbed
@goodbed 2 жыл бұрын
Ha, an "Extra Firm" on GoodBed's softness spectrum is as hard as it comes with respect to mattresses. These mattresses won't be a good fit for most of us, but there is a (relatively small) group of people who prefers this type of feel. That said, unlike the floor, even an Extra Firm mattress still has a little give. So anyone who compares an "Extra Firm" mattress to sleeping on the floor is either exaggerating or hasn't slept on the floor very much. :) I hope that's helpful.

@@goodbed the mattress shops I've been to are pushing me into a softer mattess that is less durable for a heavy side sleeper. It might be a good mattress but after a few years it will sink in, I believe. What's the best compromise in your opinion? Also, I've read somewhere that it's better to buy a taller mattress as if has more support - is that true? I'm considering a Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid
@goodbed
@goodbed 2 жыл бұрын
@@ormand3000 In terms of what you read about taller mattresses, there is no truth to that whatsoever. As a heavier person, there is a minimum height to ensure that you are not going to bottom out on the mattress, but this doesn't necessarily need to be that tall -- depending on the softness of the various layers, it could be as little as 10". Oftentimes, thicker mattresses (eg, 15" or more) tend to just have more layers of foam, which can break down over time causing deeper body impressions for a heavier sleeper. Re: your principal concern, I do think you're right to be concerned that as a heavier person, more softness will likely not last as long. All else being equal, the more foam is compressed, the more it will break down. That said, all else is never equal -- so there are soft foams that are extremely durable and firm foams that will break down very fast. The key factor tends to be the density of the foam, which is not directly correlated with how soft or firm it feels. In terms of the best compromise, I would recommend that as a heavier person, you give strong consideration to one of the mattresses on this list: www.goodbed.com/guides/best-mattress-heavy-people/ In most cases, these are mattresses that are specifically designed with denser foams and stronger coils to deliver the best mix of support, pressure relief, and durability for heavier people. In many cases, they have warranties that back this up (unlike most mattress warranties, which tend to offer effectively little to no protection against body impressions). In all cases, they're ones that we've evaluated and deemed to be up to the task for a heavy person. And collectively, they represent a range of feels (to suit a variety of preferences) and features (some of which will be a higher priority for you than others). I hope that's helpful.

I’ve laid on two today. Grand Supreme model Prestige line. It felt very soft and not so hot. There was one even softer Presidential Grand Suite Palatial Crest with even more cooling beads. To me the former felt decidedly better as the little firmer feel is good for Stomach sleeping, while still conforming enough for side sleeping and back sleeping. It felt “snug” or Nestled as you call it. But not in the same way of a Tempur does. How about a Simmons?

You and your channel/website are incredible!! I have been “tossing & turning“ (pun intended… LOL!) Over my next mattress and with so many choices over the last decade I find myself dizzy with all the options… Not to mention all of the new construction of said mattresses. It was easier to pick out my first car then to pick out a new mattress. I am hoping this will be the last mattress I will ever buy as I am 69 years young and if I get very very lucky I may need to buy another mattress down the road. I can’t thank you enough you are my “safe place” when I get overwhelmed with choices and bombarded with advertisements as “everybody” has the best mattress, in their opinion.🧐 I find myself leaning toward the Purple mattress as I am blown away by the “out of this world“ concept. I am going to go back to your website and see what you have to say about the purple. And if I have to take the free 100 and night trials of all of these mattresses then I will have to do that. But I’m hoping to get lucky and pick the most perfect option for me without going through the entire gamut. Thanks again for all you do and all that you are! 👍❤️

My only hesitation with that one is that there's quite a bit of foam on top. Mattresses with tall pillow-tops such as this can sometimes soften prematurely and lose support. Good question. This is sometimes hard to answer, as many brands won't talk about the details of the fire barriers in their mattresses. However, we can offer a general guiding principle here in that quilted top models are much much less likely to have fiberglass fire barriers. These are typically only found in smooth, stretch-knit hybrid mattresses. Hope that helps.

This is largely dependent on personal preference and your specific body type, but... typically mattresses that are made with higher density foams and higher coil counts tend to last longer. In the Sealy collection, the higher coil count Pro HD coil should have the best longevity.

Hi Teri -- Thanks for your question. Technically, the closest successor to that model would be the Posturepedic Hybrid Paterson Medium. Great video 👍🏼 I need to get a king single for my mother who is going into aged care. They require it to be compatible with their bases that bend (adjustable base). It’s a bit confusing to know which is best for this because although many of them are supposedly adjustable base compatible it’s pretty obvious they are generally not very flexible. I looked at the Sealy Elevate range but even that’s confusing because one guy indicates that if I want it to be adjustable base compatible then it needs to be made to order and apparently they make the side support bars differently. I really don’t know. There’s a different brand called Body Balance which is what I think you call a hybrid design. Micro springs plus memory foam, that seems more flexible in theory.
@goodbed
@goodbed 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the question. Generally, most mattresses that use pocketed coils and/or foams are compatible. We think that overall, mattresses with pocketed coils tend to conform best to an adjustable base. Keep in mind that mattresses using the older continuous-coil style tend not be compatible with an adjustable base. I see you were looking at the Sealy collection -- so the Sealy Essentials, for example, can't be used on an adjustable base for that reason. Also generally, look for mattress that doesn't have a super quilted/puffy cover; those thick covers can get bunched up and uncomfortable. And a thinner mattress (say 10" or so) will probably conform better to an adjustable base than a super thick mattress. So to sum up: Go for pocketed coils. Something on the thinner side, and with a tight top that isn't too quilted/puffy. Hope that helps!

Hi, you seem to be an expert on Sealy mattresses. I just got a replacement basic Sealy single sized mattress. This is an offset coil mattress but it has the center third extra layer of foam to give it the "posturepedic" designation. I notice that I can seem to "see and feel" this extra foam on the mattress surface. My foam strip seems to be misaligned. It seems to start at the 31" mark on one end and the 21" mark on the other end. Ideally it should be at 26" on either end to be centered properly. I watched a video on how this type of mattress is made and the worker simply drapes the strip of foam across the center of the mattress without doing any measurements. Is this misalignment something that you've seen yourself and is it something I should worry about? The replacement I had was via Sealy not the store I dealt with, so I still can do ONE comfort exchange if I need to. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know the exact differences in firmness and conforming between the Sealy Essentials Sudley 8.5 and the Autumn Ash 10.5? Do the springs have different levels of firmness or is only the thickness of the foam different? I have serious spinal cord compression and on my 8 inch foam I just sink near to the bottom making any body part I am laying on go numb. I need something that is giving enough to sink down for pressure relief to stop numbness on my shoulders and arms when side sleeping, and numbness on my upper back and shoulders when back sleeping. But also needs to be firm enough to not sink in too much. It seems a very difficult balance to figure out at 220lbs. I am concerned memory foam will make the numbness worse by conforming too tight. As you mentioned in another video it seems connected springs might more evenly distribute my 220lb weight. I appreciate any advice for choosing the right mattress to stop more serious nerve damage.

Sorry we missed this question and we're sorry to hear that you've been suffering with this. In the case of the above models, there are very few details on these and we're not sure that either would be a very good option for you. It sounds like you need a lot more pressure relief and more conformance whilst maintaining firm underlying support. We'd probably recommend something like a memory foam mattress or even a Tempur-Pedic here. The memory foam will allow for more pressure relief and the firm underlying base foam should hold you in proper alignment. That said, it sounds like you do have some specific needs, so please feel free to reach out to us on the chat function on our website if we can be of further help here.

@@goodbed Thank you so much for responding. You seem to have more Sealy expertise than anyone. I was able to try the Sealy Sudley in person finally a few days ago and it felt pretty close but was just a little too firm. Maybe if it sank in 1/8-1/4" more it would have been almost perfect. I am a side sleeper and need enough give to stop the numbness on my elbows, arms and shoulders. It seems springs would give more even support as you mentioned in other videos. I never had issues with numbness with spring mattresses. I have had nothing but trouble with memory foam always sinking in too much and it contouring too tight at 220lbs. I ask about the Autumn Ash because it seems very similar to the Sudley but with thicker foam, but still supportive springs. I tried several memory foams and they all felt like they contoured too closely and caused more numbness. It looks exactly like the Sealy Sudley diagram at 3:13 and you might be laying on the Sudley at 3:16? Do you know if there is any difference in coil gauge between the Sealy Sudley and Sealy Autumn Ash? Would the Autumn Ash have softer more giving springs or is the soft rating only referring to the extra foam thickness? Sorry for the long post but this is pretty serious having had recent surgery for Cervical Myelopathy. The numbness always gets worse when laying down so I somehow need to figure out the right mattress
@goodbed
@goodbed 5 ай бұрын
@@bmp713 So I'm looking at the Sudley on the Mattress Firm website, and I don't see much comfort material at all there. I'd be very concerned that this could cause tingling/numbness and/or could cut off circulation for folks that are susceptible to this. The Autumn Ash looks to use the same coil unit, but just has more comfort material up top. Truthfully, I'm not sure that either would be a good fit for you with what you're describing as these might break-in to have uncomfortable pressure points. Did anything else feel good to you in the store?

@@goodbed I greatly appreciate your advice. Most of the mattresses I tried were either too firm causing more pressure, or the memory foam layer(s) sank in too much leaving a tight imprint around my arms, shoulders and back creating more pressure. At 220lbs and a side sleeper it seems almost all memory foam forms a tight imprint of my body rather than sinking down more evenly. It seems like I need something that sinks in more evenly spread over my body, not contouring tightly around the outline of my body. It seems springs are designed to do this more even sinking rather than tightly contouring. I don't know if different types of foam might sink more evenly such as poly foam. I also need a flat surface because the ridges on most mattresses also create more pressure points. It seems what would be best is some kind of spring mattress or non memory foam mattress that sinks in enough to relieve the numbness on the sides of my body, but does not contour tightly around my body creating more pressure. What kind of mattress would would sink in far enough to relieve pressure on my sides but more evenly than the memory foam that too tightly contours? What kind of spring mattress might have this more evenly distributed support? What kind of foam might have this more evenly distributed support?
@goodbed
@goodbed 5 ай бұрын
@@bmp713 Hmmm. So what I'm hearing is that you've had issues with some kinds of memory foam and some kinds of quilted top and textured surfaces. If that's the case, then you might look for smooth top "hybrid" mattresses with less memory foam (less than 1.5") or another specialty foam like a latex-like foam or latex. Off the top of my head, some of the Posturepedic Hybrids might be a good option? The Albany Posturepedic Plus and base Posturepedic hybrids both use 1.5" or less of memory foam. These also have smooth, untextured surfaces and should distribute weight well. As a way of double-checking myself, I made a quick list of models with smooth top surfaces and minimal memory foam using our search tools: www.goodbed.com/mattress-models/?surface-type=2&memory-feel=1

Unfortunately, this is a very difficult question to answer as everyone experiences mattresses very differently. I didn't realize you had replied. I've gone through several brands and models, but I ended up getting the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Satisfied plush eurotop. I tried the medium but it was more of a firm. And although it may be good for back support, it has no pressure relief at all!! Especially if you're a woman with curves, you need something with a little more give. The plush is perfect!! Great support at the same time very soft, without sinking. That was my main concern with plush mattresses. I previously had a plush memory foam and it killed my back and pelvis. If you have spinal issues, you need the support from innerspring. Never do memory foam! Innerspring or hybrid is best especially with spinal fusions. Only complaint I have with the satisfied plush is that it gets a little hot, but other than that, I'm happy. It's correct that most of the ones we mentioned are compatible with an adjustable base, but not all. Some of the lower-end models are not. Make sure to look for the adjustable base emblem on the bed you are considering to ensure that it is indeed compatible. Beyond that, I would add that throughout the line, the Extra Firm models will have a tougher time conforming to the curves of an adjustable base, regardless of whether or not they are technically compatible. Has the mid third extra foam, over 1000 response pro coils, the duraflex pro edge as well the moisture and suface guard. Being Big Lots, it makes us weary of longer term quality but wow was it comfortable. The mattress cover looks like the Posturpedic Plus cover though with the monstera plant leafs on it? Any thoughts on this? It has the springs and maybe three layers of foam too?!

Hi Ashley. You've done a good analysis of what's in the Edgefield -- which is not a model that's known to me. Sealy does this all the time though -- makes exclusive models for specific stores that can sometimes be similar, but not exactly the same as, their national models. Oftentimes, these exclusive models are simply a way for the retailer to insulate themselves from price competition, so they tend not to offer the best value. As for the return policy, that's going to be through the retailer, not Sealy -- so whatever Big Lots return policy is, that's what you'll get. Re: the warranty, that will be on the "law label" of the mattress with various codes that correspond to codes on the Sealy website. Hope that helps!

I have had the posturpedic mattress for about 15 years now and I am a big guy. It has held up amazingly well. The only reason I am considering getting a new mattress is because I would like to get a bigger bed. Online mattress companies are the rage, but Sealy is the best IMHO.

Hi Sean -- The term "Cushion Firm" was always used to refer to the medium level of softness, softer than "Firm" but not as soft as "Plush." It was also called "Luxury Firm" in some cases. Nowadays though, many manufacturers have simplified things by changing their nomenclature to Firm, Medium, and Soft. So if you're looking for what used to be called "Cushion Firm," it may be called "Medium" in some lines. I hope that's helpful.

Hi Mimine. The monogram series was a hotel-type mattress, meaning an innerspring mattress with comfort foams on top. While it's impossible to identify a direct comparison, my educated guess is that it's similar to the Posturepedic Plus line. Here's our overview: There are a couple of pillow-top models in there that are probably close to that series. www.goodbed.com/reviews/sealy-posturepedic-plus-mattress-preview/ Hope that's helpful!

How do store specific posturepedic plus compare. Like Wenlock from BJs?
@goodbed
@goodbed Жыл бұрын
Hi A.J. -- Thanks for your question. I'm not familiar with that model specifically, but as a general rule, the only reason store-specific models exist is to be able to charge you more for the same (or extremely similar) product without you realizing it or being able to make apples-to-apples comparisons with the products and prices from other retailers. Sady, this "name game" is as old as the mattress industry itself. Fortunately, fewer and fewer retailers are hanging on to these practices, so it's much easier to avoid this today than it's been at any point in the past 20 years. I hope that's helpful.

Hi there -- I really, really feel your pain! We did create a short video called "What's the Best Mattress" that is definitely worth watching for any mattress shopper. You can find that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXjcmX2mYqtgfpo That said (spoiler alert), the reality is that there is no such thing as the "best mattress" -- lists like that are just a marketing trick used by dozens of spammy websites to try to fool you into buying whichever mattresses make them the most money. Mattresses are *highly* personal, since everyone's needs, preferences, and priorities are completely different. So unless you happen to be in the, say, 5% of people who have similar requirements to me, knowing which mattress I sleep on would quite honestly be a terrible way to choose a mattress. Fortunately, there is an easy, thorough, and highly personalized tool to use that will help you search across brands and stores (both online and offline) to find mattresses that best match your unique needs -- the GoodBed Quiz. We created it for exactly this reason, and it is by far the most sophisticated mattress matching algorithm on the market. If you haven't yet taken it, you can find it here: www.goodbed.com/mattress-finder/ I hope that's helpful.

Hi there -- We've got that in this comparison here: www.goodbed.com/compare/?mod=sealy-posturepedic-plus-hybrid-high-point-soft&mod=sealy-posturepedic-plus-foam-high-point-ultra-soft The Ultra Soft has a little more softness as well as even more cushioning and conformance. And of course, having no springs, it has little to no bounce. Perhaps most surprisingly though, in spite of having more memory foam, it has a tad less memory feel overall, which is on account of the memory foam it uses having faster recovery properties than the memory foam used on the Soft. I hope that's helpful.

Should my brand new mattress have loose fabric on top it’s not tight top feel like my other mattress
@goodbed
@goodbed 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there -- Thanks for your question. The short answer is no, not in an ideal world at least. That said, if you'd asked whether this is normal I'd say yes, it's pretty common and it's certainly not exclusive to this brand. Here's a case where we observed this on the model we reviewed from another brand, for example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWXamXRmfL-ssJY In general, this phenomenon results from the quilt layer of the mattress being just slightly bigger than the surface onto which it is sewn, leaving a tiny bit of extra fabric. Due to the structure of the quilt layer, this can result it in bubbling in some places. Usually this effect diminishes or disappears over time as the quilt layer breaks in. In the meantime though, its impact is more visual than anything else, and it should not affect the comfort or support characteristics of the mattress. I hope that's helpful.

Thanks for a very thorough video. But brands that make a quality product don’t need to confuse their customers with ever changing product lines and features…
@goodbed
@goodbed 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Guy -- Thanks for your comment. I completely agree with you. This is a longstanding and widespread practice of the entire mattress industry (not just this one brand), and one that I've openly questioned ever since GoodBed began. I've seen firsthand how frustrating this can be for consumers who are simply looking for a replica of their previous mattress -- especially in light of how difficult it is for them to start from scratch in finding a mattress that matches their unique personal requirements. FWIW, I've come to understand that its origins and intent are not in deceiving or confusing consumers, but rather in maintaining and attracting the interest and enthusiasm of retailers and their sales associates. But regardless, consumer confusion is no doubt an unfortunate ancillary effect, so my view is that this practice has long outlived its usefulness (if it ever really had any). All that said, I don't think this practice of periodic product updates should be construed as a negative signal of quality. While there are certain cases when updates include the removal of quality components from the product (called "de-spec'ing"), these cases are not the norm. In most cases, updates are designed to incorporate newer features and "technology." So, as much confusion and frustration as this practice may cause, I don't think one should infer that the updated models are inferior. I hope that's helpful.

@goodbed
@goodbed Жыл бұрын
Hi there -- Thanks for your question. Notwithstanding what you might hear from the salesman, I would be shocked if these are actually the same. From a business standpoint, this wouldn't make any sense. The only reason to give this product a different name (if it was actually the same) is so the retailer can charge more for it than other stores charge. But the "Sleepy's" brand is used for "value" (ie, inexpensive) products. So it wouldn't make any sense to add a value brand's name to a Sealy product and then try to charge a premium for it. Much more likely is that it is a lower-end product. I hope that's helpful.

Does it make sense to spend 3k on a mattress?
@goodbed
@goodbed 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Max -- Thanks for your question. I'm afraid this is an impossible one to answer in general though. Does it make sense to spend $60,000 on a car? or $100 on a bottle of wine? The answer to all of these questions is yes for some people, and no for others. Like these other products, mattresses are a product where you get what you pay for (usually at least, though not always). So the decision of how much it makes sense to spend on a mattress is a very personal one that involves how much you can afford and how much you care about getting a mattress that will check all of the boxes you need it to check in order to get a great night's sleep. Just know that no mattress will deliver a good night's sleep for everyone -- even a $3,000 mattress. So make sure you do the research to choose one that matches *you* and your unique requirements based on your body size, weight, preferred sleep position(s), comfort preferences, and priorities. I hope that's helpful.

Sealy makes a different matres for Macy’s then for other retailers. It’s impossible to compare from store to store.
@goodbed
@goodbed 10 ай бұрын
Hi there -- Yes, this is a frustrating and IMHO extremely unfortunate practice that has been eliminated from much of the industry but is still perpetuated by a few large retailers like Macy's. Put differently, Sealy would *much* prefer to sell the same products under the same names in every store. However, some retailers still insist on having their own products, generally so they can avoid having to compete with smaller retailers who may be willing to offer better prices. So in this case the blame goes to Macy's, not Sealy. That said, Sealy is more willing to make this concession at the lower end of their lineup than they are with their higher-end products. So as you get into the Posturepedic (Hybrid and Foam) and Posturepedic Plus (Hybrid and Foam) collections, you will find few if any retailers that are allowed to get away with the name game. I hope that's helpful.

Ah thanks for this! Great question. The Posturepedic line is a brand name for Sealy's core line of mattresses, yes. Most of these have some type of extra support in the center third to support the heaviest parts of a person's body - their hips. This extra support is commonly a layer of extra coils or an extra foam sheet. Both work to provide extra support and thus support one's posture. This extra support can be shown in laboratory settings, as these areas tend to be slightly firmer, but there aren't high quality medical studies available to my knowledge, no. Hope that helps!

Hi Elizabeth -- Thanks for your comment. When you say "you," to whom are you referring? The average consumer or GoodBed? Assuming you mean the former, we completely empathize with what you're talking about. For certain collections, depending on what retailer you are at, the same product can have different names -- we call this the mattress name game. Note that this renaming is driven 100% by the retailer, not the manufacturer. So based on what you said in your comment, it would seem that HassleLess Mattress is not so hassle-less after all. Fortunately, manufacturers have pushed back on this re-naming practice, relegating it to only their lower-priced products, making it less and less common overall. For example, everything in the Posturepedic Plus Hybrid and Foam collections uses names that will be common across all retailers. For the most part, the same can be said of the Posturepedic Hybrid and Foam collections as well. As for your experience with your current mattress, I'm really sorry to hear about that experience. I'm glad that it is covered under warranty, as body impressions usually are measured in such a way that they are excluded from warranty coverage. So in that sense, it sounds like you were fortunate, though I realize that is likely to be cold comfort to someone whose mattress broke down that quickly. In any case, I hope that information is helpful for you.

Hi Warren -- Thanks for your comment. Not sure if you were just being tongue in cheek here, but in case you are serious (and for the benefit of other readers), below is some pertinent information to consider. Let's start by putting aside the fact that there is no such thing as a "100% all memory foam" mattress. The mattress with the highest percentage of memory foam by volume on the market today would be around 40%, and anything more than that would be completely lacking in support, which is why nothing like that is made. But going beyond that to the root of your point, AFAIK there is zero data to support the notion that memory foam offers the most longevity of all the mattress materials in use today. To the contrary, the best predictor of a foam's longevity is its density, not its type. And memory foam, just like any other type of foam, can come in a wide range of different densities that will have a wide range of expected longevities accordingly. Going further, IF there is any one type of comfort material that is categorically most proven from a longevity standpoint, it would probably be latex. I hop that's helpful.
