That's because, my dear Seamus, that apparently, Lilo and Stitch did what a lot of other Disney sequels (Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Atlantis, Tarzan) were trying to do back in the day, where they made a movie (and alot of these were cobbled into 3 or 4 "mini stories" and that was the jumping off point for a television series.. And in my humble opinion, Lilo and Stitch is the ONLY one Disney did, that actually did this idea very well. Stitch was apparently the introduction to the television series and Leroy and Stitch was the farewell to the television series. And honestly, I would say that the sequels to Lilo and Stitch are almost as good (if not as good) as the movie itself. They infused the sequels with a lot of heart and emotion......I liked the creativity they used when introducing Stitch's "cousins"....they each have their own unique design and powers. And I actually liked that Lilo and Stitch weren't always best buddies. They had their moments of conflict.....but then, they worked it out. I liked that they weren't afraid to go a little dark with it sometimes....especially in the movie Stitch has a Glitch.

I disagree its the only disney movie/franchise that did it well. I think Atlantis had a good set up. Change atlantis 2 a bit here and there, maybe choose one of the three stories to focus on and bam they got a set up for a series; they need to travel the world to hunt down possibly dangerous machines and weapons from atlantis, getting introduced and discover other hidden mysetries in the world. It could have been great, but since Atlantis flopped they weren't able to follow trough and the introduction film became a mangled sequel with 3 different stories. Like yea for what it is it isn't great, but the reason it isn't is cause the would be tv series got scrapped, the set up has an intresting premise.

Also, that last film would have made WAY more sense had you seen the series, which is actually quite interesting considering it was targeting really young kids and deals with some heavy topics on occasion. I think the only stark contrast is the two different animation styles of the first film and stitch has a glitch versus the other two films and the series (but it makes sense from a budget standpoint and makes the show seem less out of place animation-wise with two movies bookending it with the same animation.)

Starting with Tarzan, 2D animated Disney films started incorporating a special program called "Deep Canvas." This was a CGI rendered background, painted over with watercolors to help the 3D environments blend in better with the 2D characters. This was started when I watched it in the middle of the night on a charter bus ride to Disney World for my high school marching band. I cried and bought a Stitch plushie as soon as I got to Disney. I still own it actually.

I think "Lilo and Stitch" two were made by the same team who did the movie one, seeing how similar the animation style is and how the tone of the script seems closer to the original. "Stitch! The Movie" is a pilot hour special for the series, seemingly with supervision by the original team. Chronologically it seems L&S 2 is after the originals, seeing Lilo's room as seen in the ending of L&S 1 isn't there yet, while we do see the finished dome room in S!TM, and likely why none of S!TM and the series were referenced on 2. I really recommend watching the series. While it is true that L&S 1 was about a found family, it's mostly on Lilo's perspective who lost her parents. However S!TM meanwhile has Stitch longing for a biological family (and I know it's odd, but I still count the experiments as "biological relatives" seeing they're from the same creator) and this time it's him trying to "tame a monster" in the form or Sparky. If you see it more as a 1 hour TV episode it makes much more sense in how it is delivered. It's kinda funny though that you said many of the things didn't make sense, but did try to establish "rules" like how the pods are dehydrated for easy transport, and is an ironic juxtaposition on the Hawaiian archipelago. The wormhole thing is odd, but it did have a dilemma where the rock isn't the same weight hence Stitch having to bite it. Also 625/Reuben & Gantu's dynamic is VERY fun in the series. Reuben does his own thing but does love to mess with Lilo & Stitch at times. Then there's 624/Angel who is like the love interest of Stitch (I get their "biological relatives", but they we're created, so I don't think there has to be squick there IMO).

I think those movies look weird because the backgrounds are a single painting that doesn’t really move, so they can give them as much detail as they want, but the characters (and animated objects) are drawn much simpler and with less detail to make it a bit easier for the animators to...well, animate. I personally like the backgrounds in Lilo and Stitch because they look like watercolour paintings and I love that style, but the contrast between moving characters and static, flat backgrounds can be a bit jarring. I don’t mind it, though.

1:32 -- ooh, i'm an animation major! Let's see... ok so at least the videos you've shown, I don't think there are any 3D models in the clips themselves. There might be some rotoscopy from 3D animation, but even then... certainly not in the Lilo and Stitch clip.. The interesting thing about your comment here was that this was right after the Disney renaissance, an era where they were often doing 2D foregrounds on sometimes 3D or 3D-rotoscoped backgrounds. Anyways, this was the part of the Disney timeline right AFTER the disney renaissance, which was kind of a Weird Time for disney. I remember seeing a pinterest post with more details on this that I can't find right now, but I do have the Disney Wiki page pulled up and this was known as the Experimental Era. Basically, IIRC, Disney was actually starting to make the move over to 3D animation and in the meantime they gave a lot of the 2D animation to this one studio of theirs... aand i can't find it. The point is, (once again-- if I remember right) at this point Disney was putting a lot more of their professional effort into the move to 3D with pixar and such, but they still needed to produce movies, so they handed that job over to one of their sections in florida and just told 'em to have fun. Which is why a lot of the 2D movies from Disney's Experimental Era have less standard Disney plots/themes (and kinda got less box office acclaim, unfortunately). I"d guess that's also why something seems weird about the compositing to you. I don't know that I see anything particularly jarring about the Brother Bear clip, maybe a little that the background seems washed out (but it is ice). On the lilo and stitch clip, the background looks painted with watercolor. In both cases, the foreground actually looks more digitally done than the background, though I can't imagine how they'd animate those ice floes crumbling in traditional off-computer animation. Heck, I can hardly imagine how they'd animate those ice floes crumbling in 2D. And looking at it... I think that's the problem. No one had the patience to hand-animate all the 3D motion of giant chunks of ice so they did a lot of panning and tweening with 2D drawings which wound up looking flat, whereas the characters, as is tradition, were being animated frame-by-frame and with the illusion of moving through 3D space as you'd expect. I don't know why they couldn't use any 3D animation, maybe because disney was focusing that elsewhere. so yeah, I don't think they used 3D models on the foreground but standard animation for disney has a lot more sense of depth than they were able to give to the background. I guess. TL;DR: I don't actually know, Disney is weird, and all I know is how to 3d model things and then make them look cool in substance painter. (well I don't actually even know that last part yet, I'm procrastinating the online tutorial by writing this comment, but anywaysss yeah bye hope this helped)

1:29 I think there's 2 answers to that. 1. Is the opposite; when the landscapes move or if there's a complicated cameramove, they're often done in CGI with the rest done in 2D. In the Lilo and Stitch example however, the animation was still traditional but coloured digitally, whilst the backgrounds where done in watercolour and gouache.

Anyways, since I’m already here, might as well explain the timeline to everyone: There are several continuities for the franchise: We got the main Lilo and Stitch one that includes the first movie, the Stitch! Movie, the Series and Leroy & Stitch. Then we hot the secondary timeline, which only includes Lilo & Stitch and Lilo & Stitch 2 (the series and the sequel movie were made by different teams) so the series is not canon to the sequel and the sequel is not canon to the series. Then we got the anime continuity, this one is the most complete one since it includes the first and second movie, the Stitch! Movie, the series and Leroy & Stitch and then the three seasons of the anime and two specials made also for the anime (the anime works as a sequel to the original franchise). So yeah, the anime is not canon to the series or the second film but the second film and the series is canon to the anime there are several references to all of them throughout the anime which prove this. Then we got the Stitch and Ai timeline, it only includes the same movies and the series as the original Lilo & Stitch timeline (no sequel). The show only lasted one season but the story never ended. I haven’t read the manga tho’, so can’t tell you anything about it.
