The lineage of people does include European peoples, whatever they may be, but have you ever considered the fact that the reason they want to "appear indigenous" as you put it is because they do present different. Have a think about it . I am Pakeha can trace my lineage back to English, Scots, and Irish roots, and all of them are caucasian I could swap all of them and be any.I could walk in all of those worlds. If some people have too much melanin in their skin, then that's what marks them so why wouldn't they be more inclined to celebrate their cultural distinction in a positive way? After all, despite having nearly as much English, Irish, Scots, Welsh, or whatever, they can't as easily move between those like I or others like me can. I've spent 17 years on my 4 small yachts cruising all over the Pacific. I started before SatNav and GPS so I do know about traditional pre-electronic European navigation. Some Maori were good navigators given that they stayed in the tropics and temperate zones. None of them were as good as Cook. Undoubtedly many Maori canoes were lost at sea during explorations and voyaging. I've got to laugh/cry about the fake "Maori" (with chin tats) woman NZ academic who got a NZ$300,000 grant for her ludicrous "proof" that Maori discovered Antarctica, based on a Cook Islands myth about "white foam" on the ocean. Then she asserts that Maori should have a major say in what goes on in the Antarctic because one Maori seaman was on board a European ship that went there in the 1800's! This year I was at Anchorage at Able Tasman Park on my yacht. 3 double hulled re-created Polynesian canoes pulled in (under outboard power) to get ready for a big cultural event at Mapua. They had sailed down from the N. Island. They ALL had European style Marconi rigs and sails, Not the traditional Polynesian ones. But, before they sailed off for the Big event, they ALL modified their rigs to look like traditional ones.

The same can be said for olde England, the Romans weren't exactly kind when they came in and took over for a few hundred years, neither were the Vikings with their constant raiding of coastal villages. Surely that is what New Zealand should be doing in a united way for the benefit of all? Maori evidently want to walk backwards into the future looking at their past, righting all the perceived wrongs done to them to 'guide' them forward, evidently there is even a word for this.

Mass reporting to the race relations commission on that article please. It’s outright racism and shouldn’t be allowed in publication.

Gee if someone did that, poor old Joel would have a heart attack and not get to tell us he's 54 next year lol

Indigenous means, native OR belonging to a place. Therefore Sean, if you were born in NZ and you "FEEL" that you belong here, then you are indeed indigenous.

There is also the definition of 'being there before colonists arrived'.

That's not a gotcha. What happened to them on the Chathams was terrible. Why wouldn't they use that?

Well said, Sean. We must never forget our past, where we can find solutions to the challenges that confront us today. We must preserve and protect our culture so it can be passed on to our children and fiuture generations. We humans and our fellow species of life, are indigenes creations of planet Erath. That's all!

"...pray for change to structural racism" - yes, because after making up a mystical non-existent foe, we should adopt a posture of great religiosity to combat it. That's definitely the future for public policy in this country.

Former British MP Tony Blair reckons that populists exploit a grievance, but they do not resolve it. That is the condition of the world, and our nation, as we speak.

The first Pakeha theory was that Maori arrived 2000 years ago based on carbon dating of a kiore rat, then they found another and dated it at 800 years, then calculated that each Maori generation lived on average of 35 years, hence we have the 800 years arrival. With this in mind, who brought over the 2000 year rat? Or is this his-story in the making again?

Take stuffs Joel Maxwell. Writes a thousand hyperbolic words on reclaiming the haka world record but has written nothing on why so many Maori children, babies and infants are being brutalised and killed at home. No justice yet for ruthless empire, Joel. You don’t care do you? A war dance celebrating a famous Maori coward more Important. As for his growing old piece, reasonably good journos never have ‘I’ in the opening sentence. Nothing but an ‘I’ specialist.

They just never stop talking about themselves in glowing terms, totally conceited.
@pamelaabsolum2202Ай бұрын
Maxwell isn’t a Maori name neither is Joel. He forgot to write about pre European times and how tribes fought each other, ate each other, female babies often killed at birth, slavery, elderly quietly died. Joel needs to take a DNA and be honest about his true ancestry. Diabetes has been around for thousands of years, If the Spanish had arrived in NZ before the British, there would have been no Maori left. As for growing old, we all do from the day we are born, so Joel, get used to the reality of aging and be positive. Instead of whinging and writing clap trap do something useful in the community.
