I spent several years living with elderly Nuns, they would not have buried anything imo. They are too old and would not have taken the chance it being ruined. It would be somewhere like under the alter, inside a hidden cabinet, in a priest hole...when they took special pieces out for holidays, it was always wrapped in velvet, inside a nice box and clean looking. Good luck, this treasure hunt is exciting!

Now that you know that there should be these items on the premises, you should notify the authorities that they appear to be mostly missing and have been since you bought the convent. You also have hours of YT videos to back yourself up. I would not delay doing this. There may be a simple explanation for their disappearance. 🙂

I agree. They will never go and hide things in a far away place from the sachristy or the altar. Have a look behind the big marble place on the wall. Right underneath the statue of the Virgin. Other places could be inside double doors. Visiting the surviving nuns in Canada could be a greater idea and adventure. Why not?
@Xazoutje
@Xazoutje Жыл бұрын
They were nuns, more likely in an advanced age, the chance that they had a secret trapped door somewhere in the chapel to hide things is far greater than them burring things in the garden. As they probably wanted to respect the items as well, or they were to great of a value and they took them with them not knowing that a previous sister did the actions to classify them.

my two pence worth. I would definitely be in contact with Monument Historique about the fact that you do not seem to be able to locate these items, but you acknowledge and are clear that they are specifically listed in the building. ( identifying what you do have upfront)! I think you need to be very clear to the Govt about that ( I have a degree in historic conservation and am involved in heritage preservation to some degree in the UK) and at least make them aware at the earliest opportunity- I also own a non listed older home in France that I am restoring so I am aware of the differences in the countries' approaches to heritage). I also think that those that have suggested contacting prior nuns who may have lived there, are suggesting a really good idea.I had quite a few thoughts about where they could have been hidden from your video but realistically you are looking for a needle in a haystack at this point. My genuine suspicion is that it as at least every bit as likely that they were removed before you bought the place and taken " for the church". -entirely understandable, but you need to clear YOUR ownership of that asap w Monument Historique.

When Ryan showed pictures of the missing objects, they looked like altar vessels. I would concentrate my search around that area, and in the sacristy area. In an earlier video, didn’t you suspect that there might be a chamber beneath the altar area? If the objects were in fact vessels used on the altar, the nuns would have considered them to be sacred objects. For that reason, I don’t think they would have buried them outside, but hidden them in a protected area around the altar somewhere.
@martincullen8990

Additional thought. The hidden room that you discovered earlier is another good possibility. Thy searching there again when you get your new metal detector. There might be a space behind a wall or in the floor where they put the objects for safe keeping.

IMHO I think they are somewhere in the Chapel. The Holy Family Picture is still there and the nuns would think of them as possibly guarding the valuables. The altar is a very sacred place. When the masses were said in the extraordinary form in Latin the Priest would have his back to the congregation. Sometimes the altar was part of the wall with a little shelf so to speak Later a table type altar would have been used especially after Vatican II in the 1960s. My educated guess would be somewhere either under where the new altar was or a secret compartment in the wall where the old altar was. I’m sure the objects were blessed so I can’t imagine they were buried. They would have been treated very reverently. Just a thought. Can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoy your videos every day. God bless on your treasure hunt. ❤

Yes.. I am RC and that all changed in the Sixties with Vatican II I seem to remember. I was a child then. Then much of the liturgy was delivered different. It went from Mass being said in Church Latin to the language of the country the Mass was being said it and as you say the alters were then facing the congregation.. so they could see the host and venerate it.. the Body of Christ. When I was small we used to see a lot of the priest's backs. lol.

I’m a french canadian living in New Brunswick Canada. Here, the nuns are quite elderly and there’s almost none left. Many convents are now closed. The chapel items have all been returned to the archdiocese for safe keeping. Also, when a church closes or is sold or demolished for lack of fellowship, the sacred items are always returned to the archdiocese. I can’t see nuns burying items. I don’t believe they would have hidden them at the convent. My first guess would be « hidden » for safe keeping at the archdiocese, second guess would be in the sacristy room, third would be in the crypt. I’d be curious to know the dates that the chapel was desacrilized and the date that the items where listed as protected and the date the nuns left…what does that timeline look like? do those dates all make sense?

I would also be giving the relevant authorities a call and asking if the items were removed from the premises or where they are exactly so they can be placed into safe keeping. Just to protect ones backside if sometime down the track someone, from the heritage or other association, who wants to cause a fuss over missing items accuses Billy and co. of selling or getting rid of the items or just not looking after them properly while they are in his care. Declare them gone if they are so and remove the heartache and stress further down the track. They could also argue and say that Billy should of spoke up earlier about them being gone and make him liable. People can be nasty like that.

Speaking as a member of a Catholic religious order I really don't think those items are in the convent any longer. They were registered because sometimes unfortunately items like this are stolen. I think the nuns would've taken them with them to Canada or given them to another religious community. It is important to remember that the objects were registered to the community not a specific building. For example, if my church is being renovated and it's a big enough renovation or they have to vacate the building all sacred objects are removed Or as a last resort they would've melted them down or bury them if they were damaged and no longer to be used. There is no way possible that nuns would leave sacred objects in a decommissioned convent it just wouldn't be done These objects are simply to sacred. That's the reason why they deconsecrated the chapel and destroyed the altar so it could never be used again for any purpose that was not sacred. I would definitely report to the relevant authorities that the objects are no longer there just for legal purposes. For the nuns to leave sacred objects would be completely against all protocols and it would be completely out of character.

I am an ex-catholic and now a Christian. If people would research the true history of the catholic “church” and study from a Bible version not corrupted by the antichrist Roman papacy and the Jesuits - they will come to know about the atrocities and abominations taking place for centuries within catholic “church” buildings especially convents, monasteries and cathedrals. There is nothing of monetary value left in that convent. Vatican City and the Jesuits would most certainly confiscate it before the convent land/building was sold to the public.

Billy…i was around nuns for a long time as a youth….there is no way that the nuns would go anywhere else but the chapel. The object that you are looking for are sacred and would only be hidden in the most sacred place of the convent…the chapel. Look around the alter underneath the floor or in a niche. Call it a gut feeling. Check the alter around the garden but that’s a long shot. I hope this helps….

Hi Billy, First, I love what you are doing to the Convent and what you have done with the Chateau! Great jobs! I really enjoy watching your videos and look forward to seeing each one. I am a Catholic priest in Michigan, USA. Being such, I want to tell you that what you are searching for - a Crucifix, an Ostensorium (Monstrance) and a Ciborium (Chalice with a cover) - are rather large objects anywhere from 20 to 30+ of centimeter highs! So, be aware of this as you search. You are looking for something large! Also, here in the USA, when a church or convent closes, precious things like these are sometimes passed along to neighboring churches and Catholic institutions. Sometimes also, the local diocese might take these things on too. So, you might want to check these places too. It would be a terrible shame if squatters or others absconded these things. In any case, please be sure to notify the authorities that you don’t know where these things are to make sure that you are not charged or at fault for the missing things. Again, love you, your family and you vlogs!

We do not have a lot of nuns anymore in convent here in Canada. I have worked in a convent few years ago as an administrator. The vast majority are more than 85 years old now. The Congregations have sold most of these beautiful convents to entrepreneurs. They have kept the facades, done structures and rebuild some gorgeous and very expensive condos. It's very beautiful ❤️. You should see the prices ... 😮 At the turn of the last Century, those convents were the house of the poor's, now they are the condos of very wealthy people for most of them.

My guess is that it is hidden inside the chapel, inside a hidden space under the floor or even inside a panel in the chapel. I doubt they would hid such precious items in a cellar or in a place that isn't as sacred as the chapel itself. I think they had to much respect for the items to do that. Three ideas: 1) look where you always get the goose bumps from the "presence" you feel. 2) look behind the cross, behind the painting or under the altar stone plate - in any case in the chapel. 3) normally a female convent is "paired" with a male convent - try to find that out and then ask them - maybe they have the two items.

Would those wise old nuns have hidden those last treasures behind the wall of the altar thinking no one would dare risk their souls to cut into it? I also wonder if they would have left more clues or special instructions of where those last bits are stored with someone within the church administration and that person just forgot all about it? Have you considered tapping around the walls in the chapel, especially the wood panel covered ones to see if their could be a pocket of sorts where they would have hid the religious valuables?

If the nuns did hide something, I believe they would have put it in the most sacred area which is the altar area. Check for false panels behind the niches where blessed and consecrated items would have been.

I would think these objects would be hidden in the chapel. What's behind that space below the protected painting? Or just up around that alter area? Or the confessionals?
@Normb29
@Normb29 Жыл бұрын
There was a strong medieval tradition of burying important people close to the alter . They paid for the privileges . After all God is poor and needs the money. I’d be checking the chapel floor as the most likely place as the three objects you mentioned are part of chapel or alter furniture. The alternative is within the chapel walls. I had three aunts who were nuns and that is the way they would probably have thought this out. Anything outside of the chapel they would view as desecration. I have a cousin who is a priest and biblical scholar. He has a genuine 400 year old Jewish Torah.. he keeps it hidden in « plain site » wrapped in old moth eaten alter cloths wrapped in black plastic and duct tape amongst boxes of church records in his sacristy office. « To not desecrate it» and keep it safe. « nobody steals the garbage » he said.

Possibly the priest that came to say mass for the nuns was given the treasures for safe keeping. Inquire at the local Roman Catholic parish. Or the order of nuns that they belonged to may have what your looking for. Well I hope this puzzle can be solved. Good luck Billy

Hey Billy. With them being protected, along with the painting above where the alter used to be, can't help but wonder if they aren't hidden behind the painting up high. Or perhaps somewhere behind some of the paneling in the Chapel area. Or under a piece of the flooring in the Chapel. I just wouldn't think they would hide it too far from the actual Chapel.

@vickiefowler1429

It’s entirely possible that the nuns may have taken them… unaware that their protected status meant that they were to remain on the property. Protecting them, in their minds, may have meant taking them to Quebec. If any of the sisters are still alive (very possible) they might tell you where they are - if you could convince them of your sincerity to keep them safe. I would reach out to them, if possible, and explain what you are doing and see if they are willing to assist you in locating the missing items. Could save you a lot of frustration in the long run!

Here in the US during the civil war, people hid their treasure inside the walls, inside banisters, stairs and barn floors.(where animals were kept). Also in wells. My gut feeling is they would have chosen inside the chapel. But, if it wasnt that big of a secret, then it may have already been found.

Wonderful to have a weekend video. Alone at the convent?? Well, the usual door did close. The convent that is "part of my family" -- my 3 late aunts & my livivng sister, all in the same order of nuns -- originated in France, moved to Canada. Some Sisters came to the US. My family members as above, all Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange [California, USA]. That order of sisters has a very long history. Used to be all nurses or teachers. Now every profession you can think of. Besides being very happy to discover The Pethericks, at the beginning of the convent reno, extra close to my heart because it is a former Roman Catholic convent in France. Blessings, Billy.

I know you have already done things like this, but I decided to see if AI could come up with a suggestion or two about where items might be hidden. In order of likelyhood, the AI suggested checking: 1) Cloister rooms, 2) the basement (my personal theory), 3) Attic, 4 Chapel, and 5) Library. The Chapel and Library seem really good ideas but I don't remember you ever describing an actual library. Anyway, love the work you are all doing and hope you have this quest accomplished. Very important to history. Best of luck and Crack On.

Hi Billy, loving watching the renovation’s. Looking good. I worked in a Prison in Australia for many years, it was a prisoner of war during the 2nd world war. It was is a mansion and had a tower above the 2nd storey. After the war ended, they found a radio that the Germans had hidden in the top step of the tower which lead out to the viewing area. Maybe the Nuns have hidden things In stairs/ staircases. Also the prisoners would make false floors in the cupboards to hide things. Maybe there is another hidden room somewhere. Can’t wait to see if you find it and where you find it. Maybe look at getting a Minelab monster 1000, not sure what it would cost in France but they are $1000 AU. Good luck 🎉

Great vlog again Billy and in such temps! Found the metal detector then! Good idea. Try the new one in the attic in what was deemed by the ghost hunters as nun cells. Searching for hidden items in the convent could be a needle/haystack moment. A number of churches had false panels around the alter piece to hide chalices etc from nasty non-believer types. Plus, I rather imagine a number of elderly nuns weren't going to be able to carry all that stuff too far.
