Kidney stones can be more painful than natural child-birth, so we all want to avoid them if possible. There are some folks who falsely claim that eating Meat/keto can cause kidney stones. Nothing could be further from the truth.
There are specific thing you can do to decrease your risk of kidney stones, and things you can do to make them more likely. I go into these details in this video. To say that a diet that humans have been eating for millennia somehow causes stones in the urinary tract is foolish.
Between 2001 & 2010, hospital admissions due to kidney stones increased by 50%, even though no one was eating keto/carnivore at that time. It is very likely that a fad diet does increase the risk of kidney stones, it is called the Standard American Diet. Avoid this fad diet and eat they way humans are meant to eat and you won't have to worry about stones.

My daughter was born with kidney problems and the last 4 years she’s been getting a large amount of kidney stones. She’s had 3 kidney stones at the size of 3 times 3 cm and 5 smaller ones at the same time. The doctors were planning some really difficult surgery’s to remove the stones, with a great risk of puncturing a lung. And they said that the stones would come back and she will have more surgery’s later on. She’s started a carnivore diet 2 months ago and last week she took a CT scan on her kidneys before the surgery and we got the result this week. We were hoping that the stones might have shrunk a little but to our big surprise there were only one tiny stone left, all the other had vanished! So the surgery’s are cancelled! Did the doctors talk to us and wonder what happened? No they just sent a letter telling her that it was ok and see u in a year. But I’m planning on giving them a call! My daughter hasn’t even been that strict carnivore and still there was such a profound healing! Thanks for sharing this, you’re helping so many people!

Was her Parathyroid hormone panel tested, for Hyperparathyroidism as well? If needed, the Norman Parathyroid Center in Florida specializes in Parathyroid Conditions. The Parathyroid is responsible primarily for calcium metabolism. Kidney stones are one symptom. Make sure they rule that out. Not thyroid, that is different.

I have a non-immediate family member a few years back get kidney stones when he went on Keto, then he went vegetarian. But I question that. He blamed Keto for it, but what about the 40+ years on the American diet? That gets zero blame? Also, was he staying hydrated? Was he doing “lazy Keto” and ignoring whole foods and fiber? I don’t buy that Keto “gives” you kidney stones. I think if you spend most of your life with a shitty American diet and make a huge change like Keto out of nowhere... yeah expect your body to adjust to things. Also, what if he went vegetarian first before Keto? I highly expect the same thing would’ve happened and he’d been blaming the vegetarian diet for the stones, he just happened to do the Keto diet first. Again, the American diet gets zero blame.

I was eating a diet high in almonds and got kidney stones. Foods high in oxalates cause kidney stones, don't know why the doctor didn't go into this more. What I found out to help with the inflammation of the kidneys is to eat only once a day for 3 days, drinking lots of water.

I LOVE Dr. Berry's videos! I"ve been intermittent fasting and have been studying and living a healthy Keto lifestyle for 2 years - without ever stopping! I love how I feel and look. I'm a 54 year old woman and just had my first Kidney Stone (5mm) and it motivated me to do some BIG TIME studying so I never have one again!!! I found that we tend to eat lots of high oxalate foods when we are eating things like spinach and almonds... I then learned that if I added more water, magnesium and potassium with citrate - as well as squeezing fresh lemon juice on my food and in my water each day, I can avoid kidney stones! There are some other great videos on KZbin about this!

I did keto about 2 years ago for a couple of months, it was extremely successful! I lost 10kg. However I slacked off and I found my way back to the SAD diet and eventually developed a 6mm kidney stone a couple of years later. I’m thinking cleaning up on keto was great, but I feel like it heightened my sensitivity to high GI carbs, especially sugar! It also caused fairly severe depression, riding that glucose rollercoaster again. I’m proud to say, I’m back on keto and feeling great, no more brain fog or depression. It sure is reassuring to hear Dr Berry’s perspective on what actually causes kidney stones.

I was suffering from pain on my left side, obviously due to kidney stones since 2000. I got xrays and sonograph done, and was shocked with the result that I had so many of them, that I could build myself a decent 3 bedroom villa with them. I did not want to undergo invasive surgery. Got news that I could get them dissolved in India through ayurvedic medication. A slow but sure process. In 2001 I flew from Cincinnati to Bombay to Goa and saw a recommended doctor who prescribed some medications. I spent the next 6 months in Goa, undergoing extensive test. I returned to Cincinnati with a lot of stones dissolved and feeling a lot better. I follow a strict diet to avoid build up any more kidney stones. Most of all my pain vanished completely and I feel a lot better. Plenty of water and exercise is a key factor in addition to a balanced diet mostly on the vegetarian side. ❤

I have a history of kidney stones. My first was a huge struvite stone that nearly filled my entire right kidney. Had to have surgery through my back to remove it. Now a days the stones I form are mostly composed of calcium oxilate and I have to stay away from high oxilate foods like spinach, rhubarb and nuts. I was also told to eat calcium rich foods at the same time I eat things higher in oxilates. This helps bind with the oxilates and passes it through the body instead of being absorbed in the blood stream. My doc also recommends lemon juice. The citric acid helps create an environment not conducive to kidney stones. So yes, there are some Keto friendly foods that are high in oxilates but they aren't exclusive to the Keto diet. You eat these same foods in a vegetarian or vegan diet as well.

But I have 3 more still in my kidneys :( I went to a Naturopath doctor to get to the root of my problem and he did IGA,IGG tests and found out my inflammation was being caused by an allergy to dairy (cows milk cheeses),and eggs! Great video Dr Ken… I had a stone for a year before it was discovered this month when I finally got pain. I know now it was over a year in the making because I wet the bed twice a year ago but no one thought to check my kidney. Well after getting extreme pain in my right back side I went to the ER and they saw a 7mm stone. They also saw my creatinine levels up to 1.9 an after removing the stone 2 weeks ago my creatinine is now 1.67 and my EGFR level is 49… My questions are, now the surgery is fine and my stent is now removed, can I expect my creatinine’s level to go back down and my EGFR to go back up 🔝 to normal? If so, how long will it take approximately?

So, I just had kidney stone surgery (PCNL) 9 days ago for the 13 stones in my right kidney. I still have a large (2.2 cm) stone in the left kidney. One of the things my doctor said to me, even without any testing on me or the stones, is that I had to stop eating animal protein. I've been Keto for just under 2 years after a stroke, and it has been amazing for my blood sugar, so I am hesitent to give it up. I'm doing my research to find out what will be best for me. I'm so glad to see this video. I am obese, had low magnesium and potassium, and high uric acid. My stones are 60% calcium oxalate and 40% uric acid. I'm thinking that sticking to Keto, working on my magnesium and potassium and possibly taking meds for the uric acid (I can't get it to come down with just water and diet) might be the best choice for me.

Stop eating spinach and any other vegetable. You're better off cutting the out and you can get all nutrients without them. They have oxalates which bind to calcium. If you're eating animal fat, and meat, organ meats then you'll be fine. Include dairy if you can (raw dairy). But you have to cut out vegetables. They're useless and cause problems.

The PCNL make me horribly ill, my kidney got rather beat up. But I finally healed. There was one stone left in that kidney so they tried shockwave lithotripsy, and that did not work. I was scheduled for a ureteroscopy but ended up having a heart stent placed, so I had to wait several months for it to be safe for me to have surgery. I had a PCNL on the left side and it went very well, thankfully. Then I had a ureteroscopy on the right side still trying to get that pesky left over. But for some reason, they left some stones in there, so I ended up having a second one where they finally got them all. So now I'm waiting for a couple more months to take a 24 hour urine test to see why I produce super hard stones. And I will be having an ultrasound to make sure there is no damage to my kidneys. @@wmp3346

Really none of this information applied to me. This is my second kidney stone after 10 years ago being my first set of stones. I'm not obese and eat mostly animal proteins. The things i consume that are high in oxalates are almonds, spinach and beet supplements. I wasn't aware of almonds and beets being high in oxalates until just recently

I'd like to add that you can also get kidney stones from water, if it has scale in it. Deepening on what type of water you drink. My mother had so many stones thru out her life and most of them she needed to get surgery to remove them. She used to only drink water, soda was not even a thing in Europe in the 60's and not everyone could afford it either. I think it's important to know what type of water you are drinking. Tap/filtered/bought... It sucks that we no longer have clean water and we should considering how much we pay for it.... btw Olive oil helped my mom not to get any more of them nasty stones....

Hi I'm new to your channel and I find your videos to be very informative. As I finished watching this video, however, I realized you hadn't said how to get magnesium and potassium on a keto diet. When I looked it up online, the suggestions were all higher carb foods, like grains, bananas....etc. It has left me confused how to get these nutrients without taking supplements when eating keto. Any suggestions? Thank You very much.

Avocados, soaked nuts and seeds, fatty fish and eggs and full-fat dairy, leafy greens, mushrooms, mineral / sea salts, some from meats and poultry. These contain varying amounts of potassium and magnesium, not to mention other important ion minerals like calcium. Having a supplement handy for magnesium and potassium is generally a good idea as a back up.

Ken, here is a thought. My ears perked up when you said uric acid. Some folks have reported gout when going keto, those that stick with it say it lasts about a week to three and goes away and does not come back. I am pretty sure it happened to me. The advice is add lemon juice to water and do it a few times a day until it passes. I didn't get classic gout, as in swelling on the top and side of the big toe joint but rather under it and the entire left front part of my foot was swolen for over a week. I did the lemon juice thing and drank water like a damn fish. If pushed on it is a tiny bit tender but swelling gone and I expect it to be non existent in another day or two. This leads me to the bigger point people talk about "keto flu", I have had none of the typical issues, (though the gout and another one I will talk about in a moment). I think the reality is a lot of shit that happens when you go keto isn't caused by keto but it is the result, if that makes sense. As the body comes out of the shitty state it is in, various things are purged and there are short term discomforts. Gout would be one, uric acid so why not a uric acid kidney stone? Here is the other thing that I have had happen in the last 29 days, zits. Not on my face, not a big break out. I mean go to bed no zit, wake up 8 hours later big, painful, puss headed zit, just one. Pop and clean with some alcohol and spray with some hydrocortisone and it goes away, done. I figure now having dropped almost 8% of my starting weight I am burning some fat cells that have been sitting there in "reserve" for may be 10 years. We store toxins in our fat, as we start to rapidly burn it those toxins come out. Like these damn zits show up every 4-7 days, just one at a time, no corelation to the location. One on my right bicep, the next on the inside of my right thigh, the next under my left arm pit, the next in the damn middle of my back. I would say it isn't because of keto but more due to burning old fat and the body re-adapting to healthy living. Kind of like the old country doc saying, "it's gonna get worse before it gets better". Hence a lot of things people say are "caused by keto" are actually the body dealing with detoxing and adjusting. They are not caused by but rather symptoms of biological adjustment. What are your thoughts on this, hell it may make a damn good stand alone video for you. I looked this up because I just got a question on my channel about stones and referred that person to you.

My nephrologist advises eating less meat and eliminating high oxalate vegetables. Therefore, eating a ketogenic diet is okay for me as long as I avoid nuts and high oxalate vegetables because keto restricts protein anyway. My question is, would you recommend a carnivore diet to people who are prone to making calcium oxalate kidney stones. Thank you for this video.

I have just one kidney and have to be careful about eating high-oxalate foods that might promote stone formation. Generally, the ketogenic diet is very adaptable for these purposes. I eat moderately-high oxalate veggies (such as Brussels sprouts, broccoli, avocado, etc.) on alternating days. I eat very low oxalate veggies (such as cabbage, red pepper, Romaine lettuce, etc.) more frequently, almost daily. So I don't miss too much! It's all worked well for me: have lost 36 lbs. since May and am feeling great! And no stones!

I wonder if you could explore oxalates and how they increase the risk of forming calcium oxalates (kidney stones)? The keto diet encourages eating foods high in oxalates (spinach, beet greens, almond flour if you're doing "dirty" keto, dark chocolate...) and it's a huge problem for people who are sensitive to oxalates.

I had my first kidney stone 10 years ago, just prior to turning 65. It was moderately painful and worrisome since I didn't know what it was. When it finally passed it was the size of my thumbnail (I still have it). Since then I had kidney stone events about twice a year - none of them anywhere near as big as the first. Beginning in mid January of this year, I wentvon the Ketogenic/IF diet. Before I had alway drunk my coffee black, but I began having a half cup of heavy cream in it. Since then I have not had the expected kidney stone event - first time in 10 years. I did drop a significant amount of weight, and I do put cacao powder in with my coffee. I haven't seen a Dr. since 1971.

I have always believed in listening to one voice, not 50. Based on that, i have been following your advice vs all others when it comes to KETO. I am a 53 yr old male who was a body builder in So Cal for many years, i was also a gym owner. When you leave that way of life, sometimes you tend to continue eating like you did when you were hitting the gym 3 hrs a day. That leads to getting heavy. I recently decided to start card depleting (as it was known back in my days of weightlifting). I have since dropped about 30 pounds, i feel better, waist is trimmer, i can even see abs again. The only thing i have found is that i have been getting a more "yellow" urine than before. I only drink water when im thirsty but it is getting more yellow than before. If i "push" my water and drink when im not thirsty, its much less yellow. I also think i am passing stones, however, they are not painful at the moment...ive had a REAL stone before and it brought me to my knees...these must be small because they dont hurt, but i can tell when one passes, its like someone kinking a garden hose, then releasing it... for lack of a better term, its like shooting a b-b out of a b-b gun.. i have a weak stream and then BOOM, i feel something "exit" and its flowing like normal. Not sure whats causing this, Doc just said "i dontknow what that would be"...then he proceeded to tell me to STOP KETO and increase my carbs, healthy grains, fruits, vegetables, etc.. and CUT WAY BACK on ANY red meat, poultry and fish. I am not going to do what, but im a bit lost as to what i am passing during urination....they certainly dont feel like crystals and they arent painful when they do pass.
