Viewers, apologies for the 'squeezed' screen quality on this review. The game had its resolution locked to 5:4 aspect ratio...but this was far from the worst part of the game!

Butter contains oil and using it on the car jack was to reduce friction and make it easier to slip out, what's so illogical about it? Speaking of which, what's wrong with the weird puzzles anyway? Who plays adventure games to solve normal problems with normal solutions? Fans of adventure puzzles want complex, challenging puzzles but normal is widely known thus inherently obvious. This means interesting puzzles must deviate from the normal and that's something I love that Secret Files does. The puzzles in this game sound crazy but they still follow the laws of physics and it's really fun to see just how far you can stretch the laws of physics. The cat phone puzzle was actually one of my favorites, I wish more people can appreciate the beauty in that. It's true that some solutions have chances of things going wrong but those gambits show just how far Nina and Max would go to get what they want. It doesn't break the world's internal logic unless you have a proper rebuttal, which I'm willing to hear. When it comes to the voice acting, I personally don't have a problem, in fact, I think the cheesiness has a charm to it. But I can understand it's not everyone's thing. But in any case, it sounds like apart from some minor scenes, most of your complaints are about outdated visuals and voice acting so would that mean it was a good DS game?

Butter may contain oil, but so do vehicles! Considering the point in that part of the game is to use it on a car jack that's holding up a vehicle, would it not make more sense to use oil from the vehicle itself? Are you seriously telling me that if you were in that situation the first thing that would come to mind is butter?! As for the weird puzzles, the game is set in what could be considered as a 'real world' scenario. Complex puzzles are fine, but they should still follow the train of thought of a person finding themselves in that situation. Someone thinking 'oh i need to free up this car jack...erm...know i'll use the butter i happen to have in my pocket' (which would be a melted sticky mess and not work) rather than thinking 'hang on, this is a vehicle...vehicles contain oil'... is ridiculously far fetched. Beauty in strapping a phone to a cats back? You got to be kidding? Again, any sound minded person in that situation would know that you can't control what an animal is going to do. 1. It's way too risky that it would be spotted by the bloke on the phone and 2. The cat could have just walked off in any direction and the conversation wouldn't be heard, it's a cat they're notorious for being a law unto themselves. It wouldn't just wander i and stand there! It's a obvious indication that the development team were clutching at straws for ideas! Each to their own on the voice acting, but personally it felt like a cheap straight to DVD movie from the 90's. However, we did give the game credit where credit's due and it's just a shame the bits we gave credit were overshadowed by more than just outdated visuals and voice acting as we point out in our dislikes and is shown in our scoring. As for whether it's a good DS game, well, personally i wouldn't be willing to fork out for a DS to find out simply based on the game 'possibly' having better visuals and i cant understand why voice acting would come into that one? Unless they completely re-recorded the voices outside of a toilet for the DS version? Visuals alone don't make up for game content. You can't polish a turd.

@@dandd_gaming I kind of meant beauty in how far you can stretch the laws of physics. But I guess it was my bad on the wording, which implied I was specifically referring to the cat phone, it was just an example really. But as for your criticisms on it, I did indeed say there was a risk but the water bowl was at the center of the kitchen which the recording target was turned away from and was distracted by the phone, so the odds were in Nina's favor. The salt wasn't certain to make the cat thirsty but there was a good chance and didn't hurt to try, in which case would lead the cat to the bowl of water. Even humans can be manipulated, even if you can't control all of a creature's actions, there are things you know it will certainly do. As for the butter, it was four layers of butter and she only got it recently. Not to mention, even the melted part, some of the oil can be extracted from the bread. Sure, maybe the oil from the car can work but you don't have to use it if the oil from the butter works. Not everyone thinks the same way. So when you say that puzzles should still follow the train of thought of a person finding themselves in that situation, what kind of person are you talking about? There are all kinds of people. Though, from your complaints about it being ridiculously far fetched, it seems you mean what a normal person would think. You know what it is when the solution of every puzzle is the first thing that comes to a normal person's mind? It's called being obvious, which makes a game boring. Finding solutions that sound crazy but turn out to work is what make these games fun, something about bizarre and logical becoming one.

@@psykofreac9188 This game doesn't stretch any laws of physics, it breaks them before needing to stretch them with it's implausible solutions to puzzles! Regarding the butter, i think you're missing our point. From a game development standpoint, why put the need to find bread with butter on it into the game in the first place when the point is to free up a car jack that is beneath a vehicle which contains oil? Motor vehicle oil may be a more obvious solution to what to use on the jack, but the puzzle could have actually been to see what objects could Nina combine to collect the oil out of the cars engine and get it onto the car jack. That could still be a decent enough puzzle in itself and make more sense than find some bread and use the butter! They've designed wacky solutions to puzzles just to attempt to make the game more interesting, yet in our opinion it's just thrown it off the scale and into absurdness. Surely making puzzles that are logical, complex AND interesting at the same time should be the challenge for game developers, anyone can come up with an off-the-wall puzzle solution. Look, thanks for you're comments, but i think it's clear that we're not going to convince you that in our opinion it's akin to a turd i forgot to flush today, as you're clearly a fan of the game and likewise you're not going to convince us that it comes out of the toilet smelling of roses, so we might as well agree to disagree...and I'll go flush my turd. Thanks for laugh though!

@@dandd_gaming No, implausible isn't breaking the laws of physics, it literally means unlikely, not impossible, that's a contradiction. Sure, I am a fan of this game but I'm asking you to show how the solutions of the puzzles don't work. Yes, they are unorthodox(which in my opinion makes them interesting) but you haven't convinced me how they are illogical. But if this is where you want to end it then fine.

Haha, thanks guys, 100% agreement here :D I picked it up on Steam recently because I like story driven point & click adventure games and this game has so many good reviews, I was baffled of just how bad this game was. I hated every minute of it and am shocked of the cult following this game series seems to have. Must be nostalgia blindness for point & clicks I guess...

Thanks for the comment, appreciated! We're probably review the sequels too at some point in the future - we know they'll annoy the hell out of us to play but good for a laugh!
