In a game where the ball is shaped like an egg with points on both ends, and the players are clad head to toe in literal battle armor, slamming into each other, like bulldozers on full throttle every time, yeah. Absolutely, anything can happen, and none of it makes sense. But boy do we love it.

simple. the punts used up all their Loser Particles which allowed them to keep winning
@daleftuprightatsoldierfield3 ай бұрын
The main reason is that the surrender index naturally favors close games. Every single punt in the top 10 occurred when the team was either tied or losing by one score. Those deficits can easily be erased by a single stop and a single scoring drive. Another common factor was that many of these teams had very good defenses, so they were confident they would get the ball back

And while one-score games appear to be their preferred flavor recently, they've had more than their share of weird game results even before that. The slow-starting season quickly became thrilling because the defense was just that OP, people were shouting “DEEEEEEE-FENSE!” at every game (I even saw a guy holding up two paper cutouts of the letter D and a picket fence, I appreciated the pun), my mom got a Ray Lewis jersey, and I distinctly remember hanging out in my mom’s friend’s basement during the Super Bowl. I played Tetris on my Gameboy Color, ate food, and wrote stories in my notebook as everyone around me yelled with joy. @Dularr4 жыл бұрын
@@patrick-xu1go Sure it does. Depends on what type of game you are playing. Plus you have to look at the numbers. If you punt from mid-field you have a high percentage of pining the other team within their 20 yard line. Assuming you have a good defense, you have a higher percentage of stopping them from scoring if they are pinned back vs. getting the ball at mid-field. Forcing them to put will give you a fresh set of downs. With the possibility of improved field position. Of course I understand the always go for it on fourth down approach. You are playing a shoot out, with the goal that your team will score more points than the other team. Where I am the defense mindset. My goal is to stop you at your 4 and 2 at mid-field. Giving it to my offense at mid-field. If I don't stop the fourth down, oh well, I will stop you again.

@@lostalone9320 Yes. If given the choice to mark it on the 44 yard line or the 45 yard line, put it on the 45 if you can. Makes the chains easier to spot, keeps the game going, makes the first down line to be on the other 45 yard line and easy to see, etc.
@adambward12 жыл бұрын
@@connordemorest6750 I gotta say, I've long found it pretty absurd that in the multi-billion dollar, ultra-high stakes NFL in the year 2022 (and even Div I College football), they still use line judges to spot the ball. I mean, they're essentially just relying on the eyesight of old men to place the ball arbitrarily based on where they "think" they saw it when the player went down - viewing angle be damned. All just to make things "easier"? Football is literally "The Game of Inches," so when every single play comes down to pure guesswork in terms of the exact ball spot, it kinda reduces the whole sport imo. And not just in crucial spots like 3rd and 4th downs - but literally every single play. Every single time the ball is spotted, it's guesswork. And these missed inches add up to feet, and feet add up to yards, and yards add up to first downs over the course of a game. Yet very few people seem to question this archaic way of doing things, or even think about it at all. I mean, you can find numerous videos online of refs spotting the ball very dubiously, and even vids of other refs coming in and moving the ball from where a first ref spotted it. And it never gets questioned. It's insane when you think about it. Especially considering that the technology is definitely out there in this day and age to do something about it, like put chips/sensors in the ball and throughout the field or something...
@tryste_mx2 жыл бұрын
We all know that the ball is spotted and placed at unmeasurable/un-indicatable points between yard lines during the regular course of play, but the stats Jon pulls are necessarily rounded to the closest whole number. With the other aspects of the game that move the ball in 5 and 10 yard increments, it's probable that this rounding contributes to the spikes on the graph at least as much as the officals' spots.

September 19th, 2021, we bore witness to the single most cowardly punt in the 21st century. Texans have the ball against the Browns, early in the 2nd quarter, with the scored tied 7-7. It's 3rd and 15 on the HOU 38, and the Texans gain 13 yards. However, Browns are caught offsides, so a decision must be made. Do you accept the penalty, making it 3rd and 10, and get another shot at a first down? Or do you decline the penalty, make it 4th and 2 at midfield, and go for it on 4th? Texans end up declining the penalty and punt, resulting in a touchback. It was essentially a punt on 3rd down, something that actually broke the surrender index. It was a decision so gutless and cowardly that math can't describe it's scope.

Here's another good question football wise. What is the last team to lose all but one of their games on the final two minutes or the final play? The 2021 Minnesota Vikings are probably going to make the playoffs. They have a 7-7 record. Of their seven losses, six of them have occurred by blowing 4th quarter leads in the last 2 minutes, or on overtime losses. That has got to be some kind of record. 28:18 I distinctly remember this punt because my dog got hit by a car during this game, and my dad and I had to drive 2 hours to get her to an emergency animal hospital, because this was at 8 at night on a Sunday. So it was one in the morning, and we had no idea about our dogs condition, or even if she was going to survive. We were watching Sportscenter, and they were talking about this punt, and they showed this punt. So me and my dad were in this lobby, waiting to hear if our dog was going to live, terrified out of our minds, and this punt was so cowardly, it took our minds off of it and we talked about it for 5 minutes. That’s how sad this punt was. P.S. She survived. Had some mild contusions, and slipped a disc in her back. She recovered, and while she don’t get around like she used to, she still here and that’s all that matters. Edit: I should also mention that this happened like three weeks before my birthday, so my present was getting my pup back. P.S.S. WHY WOULD YOU PUNT FROM THEIR, IN OT NO LESS? WHY? Edit: edited time stamp for your ease.

Here's a funny one (a couple years late) if anyone cares lol It's freshman year high school football and it's the middle of October in Michigan and it's cold as hell and snowing. It's about midway through the third quarter and we're down something like 56-10. It's cold and we're getting murdered. Nobody wants to be there. Anyway, we go three and out again and go out to punt. Our punter was a tall kid but wasn't good at any position but could punt decently occasionally. He goes out and he has gloves on but not any set of football gloves. Kid goes out wearing puffy, fuzzy purpleish mittens. Coach sees it and has to burn a timeout so he can take them off because at this point it's so icy and cold that the bottom of your cleats are legitimately frozen solid and worthless so there was no way he was handling the snap with these wet mittens. He goes back out (mitten-free), the snap is good, he catches it fine and then goes to punt but kind of slips falling backwards. He ends up booting the ball behind him about 15 yards to our 20ish yardline. I was probably crying from laughing but couldn't tell as they were likely freezing as soon as they rolled down. The next play Hazel Park runs an option and puts it in for 6 lmao good memories.

53:46 - What does it mean? I'll tell you what a friend of mine told me: I told her about an AI game of _Madden NFL 2005_ I'd been watching, where the Bengals (hi again!) were at Cleveland's 35 yard line; it was halfway through the 2nd quarter, Cincinnati was losing 14-3, and it was 4th & 8. Pretty good spot for a field goal that they clearly kinda need, and their kicker Shayne Graham wasn't atrocious either - 83 power, but _98_ accuracy; so he was trustworthy for a situation like this. The AI-controlled Bengals punted. It rolled into the endzone for a touchback, meaning it was a 15-yard punt. (It scored a 15.98 on your Surrender Index, by the way.) What happens next? The Bengals get a pick on the ensuing Browns drive, and eventually come back to win 25-24. Her response? "Football rewards cowardly decisions." *That's* what it means.

I actually relate. I was playing with my old Madden 17 team(Broncos, 96 ovr, included Steve Young, Von Miller). I played against my friend(Redskins, 99 ovr, included Mike Vick, OBJ, Luke Kuechly). My friend had been teaching his GF football, and had since allowed her to play some Madden w/ him. He got bored of owning me as his madden skills were clearly superior to mine(as was his team, because I don't spend nearly as much cash on video games), and he then allowed his GF to play against me. As embarrassing as it was that he thought she stood a chance against a seasoned player like me, I indulged them. I quickly bounced out to a 28-3 lead(I know, it was a couple weeks earlier), but she came back to eventually tie the game at 38. This was embarrassing enough, but what happened next makes it much worse. She received the OT kickoff, before driving to my 39 yard line. There, she faced 4th and 2, and due to a joke from my friend, she thought punting would be a good idea. The punt rolls in for a touchback, making it essentially a 19 yard punt. She is now embarrassed by the punt and asking if she could somehow take it back. And I use my first play to hand off to Devonta Freeman. Okay, so Freeman immediately FUMBLES THE BALL! And she picks it up and scores! And I lose to a girl that has never played a competitive Madden game in her life, 44-38. Unbelievable.

I think the reason why the saddest punts often occurred in games where the punting team won is because the construction of the surrender index means that the saddest punts occur in very close games, and in very close games, the outcome is closer to a coin flip. Variance handles the rest, resulting in a 6-3-1 record for teams with the saddest punts purely because the game was close and anything can happen. In short, the situations that create the saddest punts are the situations where the outcome of the game is the least predictable at the time of the punt.

@@Dragon-Believer most of tom bradys pooch punts have just been to disgrace / humiliate the other team, like one example against the broncos they pooch punted on THIRD down because they were up big, and it triggered a huge fight from the broncos bench.

47:49 - I know of another pooch punt that's happened in this century, and it's thanks to this very channel's The Worst series: the XFL's Million Dollar Game in 2001 featured a 3rd & 31 pooch punt, enabled by an XFL rule that said any ball punted over 20 yards was _live_ to be picked up by anyone on either team; after a great comedy bit of 3 players colliding trying to catch the ball, it was returned by the receiving team for a touchdown.

You know.... As a Vikings fan, I'm used to shame and embarrassment and failure. Every single year since before I was even born, they disappoint in some manner. Botched field goals, the wrong-way touchdown, 4 Super Bowl losses, Missing Rings, Pain Rankings, all of it. As I was watching this episode, I was thinking to myself, well, this hasn't even mentioned the Vikings. Lots of Bengals, lots of Steelers. Maybe, the Vikings finally haven't been the worst... at... some... ... ... Dangit! Of course it's the Vikings. Of freaking course!
