Terrell Owens' beef with Steve Mariucci set the tone for T.O.'s entire career

Forget everything you know about Terrell Owens - his on-field absurdity, his off-field… well, absurdity fits there too. But forget all that. This is an origin story, an account of how Owens became the T.O. we remember today.
And it’s basically thanks to beef. This is the story of Terrell Owens and Steve Mariucci failing to get along in a way that helped nobody but T.O.
Couple little errors: at 1:53 I said Jeff Garcia a 28-year-old rookie, he was in fact 29! And then at 10:39 that was actually their second game since being together in SF. That's my bad. Taking my flogging in private.

Especially after finding out T.O. did that because the "God is looking down on the cowboys star" motto for the Dallas Cowboys stadium he did as a nice gesture, then when Enmitt Smith and dallas took it as an insult (understandably) went back and slammed the football on the star Then T.O. said "Ok, you wanna be like that ok its on" then he did it again out of spite and Teague blindslided him

Side note about the 1999 season: That season the 4-12 Niners and 5-11 Falcons played each other on Monday Night Football at the end of the season. That has to be one of the worst combined records ever by two teams to play each other on Monday Night. But they couldn’t have predicted Jamal Anderson and Steve Young’s injuries that derailed both teams.

@@phoodiegamesOfficial Jaguar Gator 9 did a video talking about late season Monday Night Football matchups in the late 90’s and early 2000’s that featured teams that turned out not to be super relevant. That matchup was far from the only one, but it is probably the most egregious example. What happened in those years is that we officially started to see the biggest effect of free agency and the salary cap: It became harder to predict which teams would be relevant going into a season (which is what you hope to be able to do with late season Monday Night Football games). As for that particular game, at least you could say those two played a close game, even if neither were relevant.

I had the honor and privilege to meet T.O. in 2015 while visiting Southern California. He was a very respectful and cool person to talk with. Completely the opposite that the media portrays about him. Anyway, I asked him about his relationship with Mariucci during his time in San Francisco. He flat out said that Mariucci was running the team like an old school college coach. He didn't know how to manage the egos of the team, and everything fell apart. Now, Owens admit that he should have handled certain situations more mature. But, as Jerry Rice said, if cross him, he will never forget. This helps understand his time in Philadelphia, Dallas, Buffalo, and Cincinnati. He needed a strong father figure to keep him in check, and it seemed no one wanted to take that role.

@Porthos240 Listen, people read to what the media writes. Most times, reporters and columnists write false narratives with snippets of the truth. Back then, before social media. It was entirely different. Now, many athletes are more open to their experiences. I'm telling you what he explained to me, and after looking into it more closely, Owens had a point. Again, it doesn't excuse his moments of bad judgment. At the same time, you can't just blame everything on him when other factors play a major role.

Shanahan would’ve been a better coach to finish the 90’s with; especially considering what happened in Denver. He obviously inherited a lot of talent, but also got a really good resume out of it. Two championships, a further three conference championship game teams, and even with the really bad three year stint in Carolina, his win percentage is .648; about the same as Bill Belichick right now, and bested by only four coaches who coached as many games as he did. He also was their defensive coordinator for a couple championship teams beforehand, and counting those years, he was on their coaching staff for all but two of their 16 straight seasons of 10+ wins. My best guess is that it’ll be something from the early to mid 2000’s that happened to involve extensive media coverage. In the Vikings doc when he talked about Randy Moss’s pretend mooning from the 2004 playoffs, he made a comment about how the media climate in the 2000’s was unique. He gave examples of a couple wild things that happened in the 70’s that nobody cared about, and commented that if the mooning happened today, that the news cycle flips over every week and people would stop talking about it real quick. And like in the Falcons doc, he said “but that’s a story for another time”.

Apparently, TO, as a child, lived across the street from his father. He did not know that it was his father. You know how he found out? He was flirting with the neighbor girls across the street when he was like 10 or 11 years old. So their hand was forced, because they were his SISTERS. I'm serious. THAT is how this man found out his absentee father, was in fact, his neighbor. Hitting on his sister, that he didn't know as his sister, and ergo, finding his father. Yes. I'm serious. So I can't condone a lot of what he's done, but MY GOODNESS that he accomplished what he did is nothing short of miraculous. What a demented childhood. I know a lot of these guys come from tough backgrounds with absentee fathers, and I feel for them. But the kind of psychological damage this situation would do to a child... So when T.O shouted "I love me some ME", it makes a lot of sense. His own father didn't, and his Mother was willing to expose him to that. How can you NOT be exceptionally insecure.

Also, very true. Even today with the game setting new passing records and an extra game a year, his numbers are still godly by any measure, and seemingly won't ever be touched. I dont say never will be touched, because the leagues all about changing rules to water down the game, so probably one day

I love TO but to me, he was just like any receiver in that he’s happiest when he’s the reason why the teams wins and annoyed when he’s not the focal point of the offense. That’s just how a lot of receivers are wired, for better or worse.

Lots of recievers are primadonnas but don't get ridden out of town. The fact that he got dumped time after time says more about him than anything he says or does on the football field.

To your point, Jerry Rice was not always the easiest guy to get along with yet the 49ers never even considered trading him or letting him walk until he was way past his prime. Then you have guys like Lawrence Taylor who were just a tornado and again, Giants were never trading him. TO, who was immensely talented, just kept getting pushed out. I don't think he's a horrible guy but when you're as talented as him, Randy Moss falls into the same category, but teams would rather get rid of you then put up with you, then you are a huge problem. That's not saying others weren't also part of the problem but you are a major contributor to it.
