Tiki Barber beefed so much with the Giants that everyone forgot how great he was

Make sure you subscribe to SB Nation and don't forget to hit the bell so you never miss an episode of Beef History. If you actually want to relive the Super Bowl that I tried to kindly not remind you of, check out our episode of the Worst about it here: • The worst Super Bowl p...
Tiki Barber ran the ball. The Giants liked that! Tiki Barber ran his mouth. The Giants didn't like that. While he statistically is the greatest running back in franchise history, the New York Giants and Tiki Barber became two ships passing in the night - but like if one of those ships would occasionally talk trash about the other ship.
Without him, the Giants found the success that had eluded them while Barber was on the roster. And without them, Barber found ways to stay busy. He bashed Eli. He bashed Coughlin. And he made it so no one missed the running back who had retired in his prime.

One of my favorite things to see in beef history is when petty, selfish, or rude people do compassionate things. Barber being at Mara's side while he was about to die and then gifting the game ball to his grandson was a genuinely moving moment and I struggle to see it as selfishness. People are complicated and Beef History is really good at showing that.

Yeah, because Ronde Barber played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now unless there's something I don't know about the fiery crucible that is the Tampa sports news media, I'm pretty sure Ronde Barber had just a wee bit less echo when he spoke. 8 Million in New York proper. 20 Million-plus in the metro area. It's the biggest market, LA hasn't had a team for 10 years (and wouldn't for another 10). So this is the place where the most people talk and argue about NFL football. New York, baby. Few have won against the New York Sports Media. Chad Pennington was actually one of the few... hats off to him. But you know how the hive mind works... say something interesting, the papers will make it sound as bad as humanly possible. Tiki got caught in this crashing wave... it's too bad he drowned. I really loved him in the mid-2000s, and now I'm no longer an NFL fan (seriously, i got rid of all my giants stuff). But while I was a fan from the 90s and on, Tiki made me cheer more than anyone else who ever played for them.

One of the biggest things I'll always love about this is in the end, everything Tiki wanted to do after he retired, Strahan did and succeeded. In HS/College, Tiki was a favorite player. One time I stayed after a game and went down to the players exit to see if I could meet any players. Tiki was one of the last to come out (this was a Sunday night game, so it's already after midnight) and I got to shake his hand. I didn't get an autograph because I didn't have a pen. After he signs for the people there and shakes their hand, he goes into the players lot (fenced off from the public) and takes his wife to the car. I ask the kid next to me for his pen and then call over to Tiki to ask to come back and sign my jersey. He puts his wife in the car and then walks back over and signs for me (sadly it was a Ron Dayne jersey, it was 2000 and he was the #1 pick...). This is a moment I will never forget. Later on, he comes out and said everything all I could do was shake my head because it seemed to contrast with the man I got to meet that night. I have never boo'd him when he comes to the stadium and really just wished it could have ended better.

ryan I don’t disagree, but the giant goose egg he laid in that game can’t be entirely attributed to that defense. Barber averaged 4.5 ypc and they gave him the ball only 11 damn times. Collins threw 39 times and was horrible on almost 70% of those attempts

Tiki had a point about play styles. The rules have been changed so drastically that defenders are basically crippled. This means wide receivers are far, far more difficult to defend. So they're wide open. The run is dead. Run-first teams don't win. Period.

Lifelong NYG fan here and its crazy how Tiki's legacy has become. We loved him, til we hated him. Plus Strahan has pretty much done the stuff that Tiki wanted to do..but even more succesfully. SB rings plus a much stronger tv career. So I wouldnt be surprised if there is still some level of jealousy. But all in all, I am grateful for Tiki's career. He became the legit feature back(eventually) after us Giants fans had been without 1 since Rodney Hampton(1 of my childhood faves). I enjoyed him as a player. But Saquon has the talent and drive to pretty much eradicate Barber's records. Its just a shame that a guy like Tiki is essentially persona non grata. Hope he can get back in the fold and make ammends w the teammates he turned off.

I remember when some people said how the Giants shouldn't fire the guy in hindsight because of his success with the Saints. They forget that he was part of the problem offensively for the Giants. I mean how do you rank top 10 in offensive yards in 2001 and 2002 and still ranking bottom half in scoring? I know the QB was Kerry Collins but there's no reason for the lack of scoring to be that wasteful.
