Anyone who says he is over rated isnt worth talking to about football but wondered how he was viewed in ireland because that team in 02 never lost a qualifier save for play off in iran i front of 100,000 away fans and no no keane. Didnt lose in the world cup, went out to spain on penalties, it was a old brazil team that beat a terrible german team in the final. The goalkeepers were out of it because they were training in extreme heat and humidity for the first time. Shay Given in particular looked as if he had lost a stone in weight. What made that beef so intense during that time was because: 1. Having played at Manchester United for so many years, Keane was used to the standards Sir Alex Ferguson set during preparation and matches. He was a fiercely competitive personality who knew what was needed to win trophies, and the Irish setup was anything but conducive to that. McCarthy not doing anything to change that was seen as a broken promise. 2. Having reached the quarterfinals of the 1990 World Cup, Jack Charlton was seen as a near-god by the Irish public during that time. Older players like McCarthy deferred to him without question, but that opinion wasn't shared by the younger players, particularly Keane. This is probably how it all started. 3. For many years Ryan Giggs didn't play international friendlies because of injury (officially). However, the truth was that Sir Alex had a policy of refusing to release him for these matches, which didn't endear Giggs to the Welsh fans. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a similar policy for Keane, whose playing style meant more time spent on the sidelines than most players. 4. Keane was not a nice guy when he got drunk and would fight anyone who rubbed him the wrong way. Sometimes his targets would even extend to United and Ireland fans, so what do you think the Irish media's opinion of him would be? 5. Another one of Keane's personality flaws is that he holds long grudges (Alf-Inge Haaland being the most famous example), possibly because he was written off for being too little as a young player. Whatever the reason, it's not a personality you want to have when resolving prior differences with your manager.
@mechkota4 жыл бұрын
About first point. Keane is not the first world class player who played for weak national side. For example in world cup 94 Stoichov played for the best club - Barca but he still played with passion for our national team.

I knew Keane had ended Alf-inge Haaland's career, but I didn't know it was grudge, can you explain?
@zhiyuanchen62114 жыл бұрын
@@noname-hf9ty It started in 1997, when Man Utd went to Leeds for a league match (which they lost 1-0). In the final minutes a clearly frustrated Keane lunged in for a tackle on Haaland but ended up injuring himself instead (it was a knee injury that kept the United captain out for about a year). As he was rolling around on the ground Haaland accused him of faking injury, which is the absolute worst thing you can accuse Roy Keane of doing. Four years later Keane would get his revenge in the Manchester derby with that infamous tackle.

@@mechkota And? Barcelona and Real Madrid flip a coin and then one of them is handed the title at the start of the season. It is a joke of a league, there is little sacrifice in playing for both your national team and Barcelona. Roy Keane played for Manchester United, if he didn't have his eye on the ball for half a second he wouldn't be lifting the title at the end of the season.
@StuTheDon173 жыл бұрын
It's interesting hearing Keanes take on it. He was angry that his national side was constantly so unprofessional. From preparation, to logistics. He spat the dummy at that World Cup because the Irish management were a shambles. He insisted that the side had to act more professional and be supported as such. That was correct. He just went about it all in the wrong manner.

@shane long It actually seemed more like Keane was. Even though you might not agree with the manager when it comes to training or preparation, you don't constantly undermine him and complain to the press, threaten to quit all of the time, basically holding your country hostage for your ego. McCarthy did what he could managing such a personality. Even though the Saipan trip was his idea, it wasn't his idea for them to have poor accommodations and conditions. That's on the FA. So for Keane to complain about the manager about these kinds of things is petty nonsense that has no place for a country competing at a World Cup. It's a distraction and McCarthy was proven right in that they took a contender in Spain to a shootout.

Nice to have an American take on this famous rivalry! Next: Messi vs Ronaldo
@JR-sj1jz4 жыл бұрын
I don't think there has ever been outright beef between the two. However Messi fanboys vs Ronaldo fanboys would definitely be one worth doing
@nathanieldean58504 жыл бұрын
it's not really a personal rivalry like this and the others in the series, from all accounts Messi and Ronaldo get along very well. Now keane and Veira is one i'd watch
@hugostone48534 жыл бұрын
not really a rivalry as in beef

Liking this video before I've even watched it because not only is it soccer content, which I'd love to see more of from sb nation, but it's Irish soccer content. #COYBIG This is the beef history I never knew I wanted until this moment.

Roy Keane was/is a miserable, labile, volatile, contemptuous headcase.

We need a rewinder on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s short corner against Barcelona in the Champions League semifinal. That moment is one of the most dramatic moments in the past few years.

Mourinho v Barcelona would be a great next video. Great job on this one ! Keane was right, but I've always liked and felt sorry for Mick. Wasn't his fault that the FAI were/are a bunch of corrupt leeches.

I think you missed an important point. Keane didn't miss matches because he was being awkward, he missed them because he was becoming more injury prone as he got older. He had a number of recurring injuries that he had to manage and that meant missing none essential games for club and country

Goddamn Keano, he was a damn legend, there's no denying that, but he coul've played in a World Cup if he just compromised a little. Guess you could argue his no-compromise attitude is what made him great in the first place... But it's a damn shame, truly one of my favorite players, I can't avoid thinking he could've gotten more out of his career.
