Amazing video!! That's my dad's shop (and himself, José) there! Thank you for the kind words on his wares. I don't know if you could understand most of what he probably wanted to tell you, but he carries many independent spanish and portuguese knife makers who make unique and great knives. The problem is that there's fewer everyday and they are very spread around the whole peninsula. I would have loved to be there to translate for him! Regarding Toledo, I have been there many times, and also despise the fake and souvenir products they sell in 99,9% of the shops. There are very very few who still sell antiques (at very very high prices) and pieces made in the old Fabrica de armas (a weapons factory owned by the government, which closed many years ago). I mostly look at swords, since I do HEMA, and only know one blacksmith workshop left in Toledo. They are called Hermanos Moreno, but sadly they told me last year that making souvenir grade products is becoming more and more lucrative for them, so they have switched the things they manufacture now. Anyway, again, thank you! 😊 And please, if you need any informstion I could give you, just ask!

This is awesome to hear from you! There were so many wonderful moments during our short interaction with your mom and dad that didn’t make it into the video! My significant other was there with me and she loved them, believe me she’s has a sixth sense for people. Also, they reminded me so much of my parents who owned a small jewellery shop in US (about the same size as your dad’s) and retired about 12 years back. The pride of ownership and the way they interacted with the customers… so much like my parents! When he sharpened the knife for me and gave me a gift of couple of bandaids, I laughed so hard! Now I do it when I sharpen knives for my friends. Thanks for reaching out to me and please stay in touch!

@@CuttingBoardRx thank you so much for your kind words 😊 They are really proud of their shop and the work they do!! My mum was very exited asking me if you said anything about the bandaids (an idea she had many years ago and is very proud of). She will be delighted to know that you liked it!

I believe that Albacete has always be the town where most blades where made. They were renowned for their exceptionally well made folding knives, fixed knives and swords. To this day there are a few production knives companies that are still located in Albacete, and their knives can be bought almost everywhere in the world: Cudeman and Joker being good examples of it. People used to say the knives where made in Toledo as it is the closest big city close by, but it has always been Albacete, to my knowledge.

There should be some independent knife makers still, albeit no recognizable brands...

I've heard about Miguel Nieto knives in Spain. They say, the knives have quite a good quality. Did you have an opportunity to test them?
There is a Bushcampingtools channel on youtube. The guy is a real pro. He tests knives in the real world not just tabletop or paper cutting tests. He says these are generally good knives.
Thanks, the Navaja in this video is a Celaya (€52) and the fixed blade is Martinez/Albainox (€25). There were a ton of Joker brand knives everywhere (€15-100) but they didn’t seem appealing to me bc of the huge lettering JOKER on every blade. Muela knives are very common everywhere in Europe and I checked them out but found that workmanship/materials don’t match the price (€80-€350) for 420C pin construction knives). I will look up the others, thanks for suggestions!

I have a Muela Mirage 23 and a Nieto Warfare knife. Very positive I must say. Good fit and finish, stable good quality, good price. Very satisfied. As good as any USA knife. Why? Because they use sensible stuff, and don't rant about the latest steel and big big niche brand names. They just produce good quality which will serve you well.

I’m glad you have a knife. Because from your other comment it wasn’t obvious that you like knives. I am for balance between the price and performance and I own NO Muelas because they are overpriced and not any better made as Martinez brand. So please, no need to lecture the “silly Americans” when you have yourself fallen for Muela gimmicks. You can find better knives for less, examples are Nikov from Czech Republic, Martinez from Spain, MKM, Viper, LionSteel from Italy and Boker Solingen from Germany that offer better price or more performance or both. And Taiwanese brands are incredible btw.

@@CuttingBoardRx I have a few Extrema Ratio knives, some Ontarios, which are sub-par, K-Bar which is a nice thin sheet knife and some Chinese stuff, which are better than expected (K25, Linton), then I have Boker, Kizlyar, Mr. Blade, FKMD Leonida Spartan, etc) I also have Victorinox Hunter Pro and ESP folder.. to name a few. The haptics and feel are the major parts when I look for a knife. High-tech is ok, but when it is just good, I like it. I see that many Americans do not understand that the knife is a system. Blade, handle, sheath. If one is lacking, the whole system is lacking.... You know Tops Knives? They cannot make a sheath that has a snap button???? Regarding Spanish knives, I think Aitor and Muela are great. The Mueal Mirage 23 is an upgrade to the SOG and is a no nonsense knife. However, once I bought a Martinez folder, but it was not very good, it had very thin liners, and was easily deformed, hence the blade had movement, and I could not fix it. Went into the waste basket. However I bought an Adventure Bayonet, which is strictly for the looks. And I think it is just great for a collection. Regarding the Victorinox, it has no thumb studs. Its a two handed opening. Yet very very sharp, strong locking mechanism. I used it to open 3in1 coffee packs and stir the drink. And it was fun having with me all during the outing. It is a good knife. Price is so much relative I think. So many knives are just for the looks. Material could be basic or high-tech. Yet if one respects the knife, it will serve well. I.e I have a Chinese Dark Ops replica since 2011. I have used it daily for utility, kitchen, cutting boxes, plastics, wood, using it for prying, banging off the ice in the fridge. Yet it is still working fine. Why? Because it is a good design. Would I use expensive knife for this? No. So the cheap knife is priceless in its usage. The expensive knife is just for show. Who cares about the latest steel, when the less fancy steels do it just as well.

Beautiful country. Bummer that you didn't see any high quality knives being made in Toledo. Maybe you missed something and someone who knows the region will chime in.
