If IT careers are so rewarding, why do many highly motivated and skilled technical pros consider leaving their jobs each year? One reason is office politics; or more specifically, the de-energizing effects that office politics can have on the unfortunate individuals caught in its grasp.
It's often difficult to define office politics because it is more of a perception than an individual act. It includes the concepts of power, influence, clique, favor, protection, and communication. Additionally, every individual in an organization will have his or her own viewpoint and experience--often with extremely different outcomes.
The negative side to office politics is often described in terms such as backstabbing, bullying, infighting, gossip, favoritism, string pulling, covering up, or working the grapevine. Employees who benefit from office politics may use more positive terms including decision influencing, personnel bonding, clarifying, plugging in, streamlining, or fast tracking.

my current manager broke all these rules on her way to the top. she started in the same position as me, and is generally reviled by the majority of the office. She just happened to click with the manager at the time who laid the door open for her as a result. but the main reason they clicked was because she was always the hardest working of the group and seemed to understand the company's mission.

Office politics are not a possibility for introverts. It's exhausting and draining. All I can recommend is this. Make sure that the owners or managers see the positives in the work you do. Other people don't matter. Your only real relationship it's with your manager or owner.

Office politics only works well in the right environments. From my experience if the environment values human trust and information integrity you will be treated well for asking questions and telling the truth (with empathy and logic.) If you’re in an environment that only values numbers, competition, and poor leadership. Only the ones who do the dirty work get promoted. (Which is not ideal longterm wise.) It’s all dependent on the environment and what they value.

This is just an idea, but start small, whether it's initiating a hello, smiling, asking short questions, then slowly increase interactions. That way you're slowly training them to get use to increase interaction with you.
