''Cursus honorum: the Ladder of Politics'' - Chapter 1 The next few episodes, we will be talking about Roman politics. Specifically, we will be tackling the rather important ''Cursus honorum'', the ''course of honours''. You could literally picture yourself a ladder, every step being a new political office, with its own title, benefits and, of course, official tasks. Whereas most of us will know that the two consuls of Rome were omnipotent -- from ''omnis potens'', ''all powerful'' -- in politics, few people know that consul was NOT the ultimate step of a Roman political career: censor was. Access to the Senate was important, yes, but it was not actually anything major: acceptance to the Senatorial ranks came as a nice side-gig upon becoming Quaestor, the first step of the ladder. For a brief overview: a Roman first needed to be born in the right gender -- male -- and be born into the right family. Generally speaking, all aristocratic patricians came from the first set of noble families selected by Romulus around 753 BC. New families would, in due time, join these, but having the right name certainly had its privileges. After being born with the right 'credentials', you would need to be sufficiently educator, preferably in rhetorics. Furthermore, in order to join politics, you HAD to have served in the Roman military (as an Officer) for several years. This again shows us that the Roman world was one of the militaristic aristocrats. Step one: become a Quaestor. In a series of rather complex elections, our young and aspiring nobleman had to be elected as one of -- usually around -- twenty Quaestores. Small note: during the Early Republic, only four Quaestores were appointed every year. The minimum age for a Quaestor is 30 years old. The job of Quaestor wasn't especially interesting, but it came with one major ticket: a seat in the Roman Senate. If can't influence politics, if you aren't in the Senate, after all. Quaestores had one of the few non-military related jobs in Roman politics. They were the highest kind of civil servant, being responsible for administration in the Roman provinces, for collecting taxes and for deputy military assignments (not common). An even more select few of the Quaestorial pool, usually only two, was assigned to serve as the personal assistants to the two consuls of that year. Each year, another four Quaestores were assigned to the Roman treasury. These so-called ''urban'' Quaestores actually oversaw the Templum Saturni -- the ''Temple of Saturn'' -- in Rome, because that was where the actual physical treasury was housed. Again, this goes to show how intermingled politics and religion were in Rome. Aforementioned temple also housed all official laws. Effectively, this made a section of the Quaestores 'supreme archivists'. I want to take a moment to address another historical 'weirdness' in Roman times. I will sometimes mention the year 753 BC, for example. BC means ''Before Christ''. Obviously, the Romans did not actually know this Christ-guy in this specific time. He was not born yet, after all. Rather, Romans defined years by the consuls that ruled in that year. For example: Cicero was born in our year 106 BC. The Romans would have referred to that year as ''the year of Caepio and Serranus'', because the consuls of that particular year were Quintus Caepio and Gaius Serranus. This effectively meant that Romans had to memorise hundreds of consuls, just to be able to tell one year from another year. From Quaestor, we will be going to the office of Praetor. Till next time!

I wanted to thank you for these tidy little summaries. I may not be learning all that much (being a bit of a Romanophile) but I greatly appreciate the effort. Well worth the time anyone spends reading these. Truly top notch.

The Romans also used AUC: Anno urbis conditae, which means after the city was found. 752 AUC was one BC. That's an alternitive use of naming the year that Romans used. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ab_urbe_condita

I noted it was 390 BC at the start of this episode. That was the year that the Cisalpine Gauls captured Rome (although not the Capatoline Hill). The Romans had to pay a massive ransom to buy off the Gauls. Obviously the Gauls are elsewhere in this run through.

Yo lion you really should raze any cities outside of your culture group. The cost of culture difference and the cost of converting severely outweighs the cost of rebuilding the city with your culture. Hope ya see this mate, have fun in your campaign

Btw, a quick tip for if you're searching for an enemy army. If you go into the diplomacy tab and choose select target or smh, you can find enemy armies on the map, both in FoW and in ambush stand. This helped me avoid ambushing

2 years late; but a tribe as used by the Romans basically just means "A group of people", in a broad sense anyhow.

I would go for Logistics, if you're only interested in proppin' up your general, yet since he's "The Man" of Your Family, I'd go for the Strategist-option, which gives extra gravitas, which translates directly into more political Power, and stability(or, in the cases where it brings instability, in the other houses, more gravitas=more Power to do something about the instability. Gravitas is King! ;) -then, I'd do Logistics NeXT, then Commander, for even more gravitas, then second-Level Tactician, for map-speed, then NeXT Level Commander, again... one for gravitas, one for general-abilities, off and on, throughout the game... while never giving anything more than a single gravitas-point to generals of other families. Works like a clock, every time. ;)

same, prefer to close infantry lines, which causes AI to withdraw skirmishers behind its own infantry. Once the two infantry lines are locked, bring your cav around the rear, wipe out the skirmishers, then after rear charge the lines. usually causes a mass casualty rout pretty quickly.
@SaulKopfenjager4 жыл бұрын
@@elchupacabra84 These were the worst tactics I think I have ever seen by a human player, & yes you can charge your Cavalry at the skirmishers just enough to scare them back as your Infantry line moves up, withdraw the cavalry from their feint attack and swing them around the wings and flank into the enemy retreated skirmishers who btw will had very little opportunity to have done much firing and just stamped crush them and then get around to rear charge into the enemy rear lines, hammer and anvil. (Your frontal Infantry assault is the anvil, your Cavalry is the hammer, while I'd call your skirmishers a kind of sickle cutting down esp hard targets firing in support in angled arcs from behind your Infantry but anyway.)

Well historically Nursia was part of the province. This comes down to an issue with the game when it comes to crossing the mountain, when in real life the army would just march through the hills.
