KT Oliveira and her husband, George, evacuated prior to Hurricane Helene. They watched on their home security cameras as the surge flooded their home.

Whoa you built a house next to the sea and are surprised it's in your house?

You built a house in Asheville NC or Wilkes-Barre PA and are shocked when it's gone because of a hurricane?
@floydhancock996514 күн бұрын
When you build on the beach, it is expected that a storm will come and wash it away. Anyone wealthy enough to have a beach home should be intelligent enough to know that. It will happen. When you build in western NC or eastern KY no one expects a severe hurricane impact there because this has never before happened in anyone's memory.

@@grayrabbit2211 They have an excuse. Anyone in a floodable area in Pinellas does not. That house was probably 5 - 8 feet above sea level. They just figured it wasn't going to happen to them. Now they will want interest free loans to rebuild in the same place and get the local Gov't to go dig them up some new beach sand. If they move, a shady builder will build a house on the same land and a dishonest realtor will sell it to some new northerners that think they are living in a resort area. Pinellas is just the sand bar between The Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay. The highest point here is 60 feet. and the beaches are under 10 feet.

They own a house on a barrier island. It should be removed along with the sea wall and a mangrove swamp installed. Of course it will never happen because the government loves the tax revenue. Rich people get what they pay for. The insurance for this house should be 20 times it's value every month.

How come so many people living seaside did not take precaution and move a lot of stuff upstairs? I would have stuffed upstairs with things and brought memories, documents and so on with me. People have left in panic without life saving medicines, photos, birth certificates, passports, business/tax/bank-documents, computers with said documents electronically and so on. One family I know put up sand bags but nothing more. The whole upstairs are fine but ALL of the important stuff healtwise, kids room, office was at bottom level and not one thing was moved upstairs and now gone. Why not just in case bottom level was flooded and upstairs spared, not even bags were packed. Don´t get it.

The major problem IS people living right on the ocean. I wish no one any ill will but it's hard to feel sympathy for people who choose to have a home in such conditions. No one forced them to live there. It's not like they didn't have anyplace else to go. I would never subject my family to living in conditions like this. Yes, it beautiful until it's all gone. And they'll be lucky if just the house is gone.
@Randive12 күн бұрын
I wouldn't have a problem with them if they weren't so distraught emotional over it. Like what do they expect living on the beach, an area known to get bad surges from hurricanes in Florida of all places? They chose to live there. This is the fault of ignorance or cognitive dissonance. Will they ever learn?

Well, you live right on the beach in the middle of a climate crisis. Look at the bright side: You're lucky you're rich and have a two-story home, with a pool, right on the ocean. You'd be surprised (I'm sure) how many people in the US are actually working full-time and living in their cars, or, in somebody's basement with virtually zero hope of ever buying a cracker box, fixer upper in Cleveland or Detroit. Thoughts and prayers.
