Same here in Kenya prices for items have doubled. The government had to give subsidies on maize flour (Maize meal is our staple). Otherwise, people would have rioted. So, doubling food prices is not an isolated case

Thank u, the petty US sanctions and the stealing of the Afghan assets is making the humanitarian crisis which started under the US regime worse. The US needs to drop their petty sanctions and return Afghan assets and then stop interfering in Afghanistan. Mutually respectful diplomatic and trade relations are ok but not the interference the US can't stop doing.

they constantly said many many times that we will open girl schools over 6 grade. the reason why it delayed could be one of these, 1. frozen assets and sanction unlike previous government where free millions of money was paid through government on education sectors 2. in such an economic crisis it is preferred (probably by Taliban and most of us) that men should go to school and women should stay at home for the moment, as men are the providers and maintainers for the wife and children. but that doesnt mean they wont open it. its a temporary issue and with better economy this could be done easily 3. probably cultural issues. dont forget that girls at any age can go to private schools and study computer, english etc.... it is not closed. but most cant afford. at the end of the day, education used to be not free, if we humans look at our history, everyone intrested was paying out of his own pocket. Taliban did not stop anyone from geting private education in private sectors, most of them are probably open. but to provide free education, this will take time and better economy. 4. or maybe they are lying, that we are opening the schools. but I dont think they are liers. as lying is one of the biggest sins according the Islam, the religion they believe, and they know it already. but its just my humble guess, I am not sure either, if they are lying or will they change their words.

You forget that Afghanistan wasn’t a nation when the US invaded. Afghanistan has never been a country. The last time it was even remotely stable was before The Soviets installed a socialist government in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is just a place where hill tribes and villages bargain with each other there’s no sense of nationality in there. Afghanistan hasn’t been a real country in over 40 years no matter what the US try to do to fix it it would never have worked. That’s why Taiwan and Ukraine are different. In Taiwan and Ukraine there’s some sort of structure of power like a president. Taiwan and Ukraine have both had democracy for the last 30 years. Even if it’s been corrupt it’s still a democracy.

There is no reason to punish the people of Afghanistan for a government that was forced on them. The US should release Afghanistan's financial reserves so the Taliban can provide relief to people. @@bumblebee4280 About 90% of the country was held by the Taliban for a few years before the pull out last year. That's not strong or independent. The reserve being held by the US government is about $7 billion dollars. That is a drop in the bucket compared to the $2.3 trillion dollars spend on the Afghan War over the last 20 years. That would hardly shape foreign policy. The US should return that money to the Taliban so they can prevent mass starvation there this winter.

No, the streets are not "bustling with men and women." Take a good look at the gender ratio of the people coming and going behind Clarissa. Not a single female for a while then girl appears. A few other women walk cautiously by. Scan back and sure, some women at vendor stand. That's because it's the only job they have now. Domestic help. Probably their one outing - to get food. Males first to eat then females if enough leftovers (which is highly unlikely given food shortages). Afghani females will be, however, first to starve.

Is this an isolated, unusual scene or is this typical? Perhaps seeing past the lens is in order. Do you have any idea of how the gender dynamics get played out in everyday life in a highly patriarchal, female-oppressive society? Among other things, food to males first starts at the family table. Males aren't born superior, they are being socialized to believe that crap.

You need to mind your own business and leave Afghans affairs alone. Western nations would like Taliban to fail because Taliban rejected their imperialists agendas and so-called "Western values". Taliban still hasn't fully completed their harsh sharia law so that their regime can be recognised. Even if the reserve fund is released, it wont reach ordinary people. The only way out is putting more pressure on them do make changes in their law and regime. Forming a constitution and inclusive gov in which every citizen and men and women is considered equal.

I am definitely for female education and equal participation of women in social and economic life. I definitely empathise with Afghanis for living in poverty. Shouldn’t CNN be urging the US Gov to immediately release Afghanistan’s foreign currency reserves rather than just stating fact? I mean robbing Afghanis of their money will likely aggravate the poverty and, with more poverty, more restrictions for women will come. So how is the US stance - and this report - helping? With all due credit to Clarissa who is a courageous woman, of course.

A little fun fact: King Amanulla prohibited by law compulsory wearing of the burka in 1919. He pushed a modernizing policy,so 100 years later the Taliban is fighting against the current. I've been afraid to hope before when it comes to Afghanistan. 2010 was the closest they'd been to the golden age of the 1970s,so recent developments have been heartbreaking. They've always been one of the poorest countries financially, but they're sitting on a mountain of cultural riches. All my musician friends have fled for fear of having their instruments destroyed. When Alexander the Great arrived in Kabul, the city was already a thousand years old. Kabul will be around long after the Taliban are forgotten. The Afghan diaspora must keep their culture alive in exile until the winds change again.

@@ultrachad3415 well rest of Afghanistan is very very Islamic so the women wouldn’t dress like this anyways. Last 20 years women had the choice to not wear a scarf 🧣 yet 100% of afghan women still wore a head scarf and dressed modestly. Afghan society is conservative and so are the women. It’s not like only the men follow Islam 😆
