A few years back I was with a friend at an LA Porsche dealer where he had purchased his car. Next door was a Bentley dealer. I was looking over their used cars and twiddling my thumbs. The salesman came out and said "jump in". It was a Continental gtc. He didn't even flash my license. Directed me on the freeway and told me to give it the beans. What an amazing car! When we got to the off-ramp he told me to "slam on the brakes with both feet at the stop sign, like somebody threw a baby in front of a car". I did so and the car came to a very composed halt. It was astounding. Never bought it and the salesman never cared. I think he just wanted to get out of the showroom. Great memory. Great car.

Sam, I had a phase 2 V8. Full disclosure I did not daily it but used it as a weekend car. I traded it in on a Ferrari which I love but I do miss the Bentley . All of the things you point out in the video-quality of the interior, ride, exhaust noise made it a fantastic car with a sense of occasion every time I drove it and I definitely would consider another one. I think you will find that if you stretched yourself into a higher mileage phase 2 that you would have few regrets especially if you can find an aftermarket warranty that covers the suspension, turbos and electronic bits. Also the v8 gets pretty good highway mileage compared to the w12

Sounds like you and I live in similar worlds. When I wanted a GT, I chose the AMG S63 Cab over the Bentley, but it was a really tough decision. I agree with all of your advice to Sam, except that he stretch his finances. I am 64 and have done very well, so I (probably like you) can stretch without risk. But Sam is relatively young, starting out with a family, probably a mortgage, etc. And his car collection is already amazing. So maybe as he inferred (and I would say) he is still young and could leave this for when he is actually a bit older - something to look forward to. A lot of my buddies drive Porsches (which I love, owned a bunch), but the Grand Tourer is more my speed now. I don't want to race anyone. But I do love an all wheel drive, 600hp/664 ft lb tq Grand Tourer that will waft almost silently down the road if you keep your foot out of it. But I'm 64.

Before you spotted that Aston Martin in the carpark, I was thinking that you should consider a Rapide as a daily. It has four seats, it's practical and it will be a comfortable grand tourer, plus they are within budget (I think). Also, a later model DB9 could be a good comparison to the Bentley as well. Perhaps a Virage or DB9 GT is stretching it a bit (around 60k), but the clean elegant facelift design is gorgeous. Overall, the Bentley is a great car, but I think you'll get a more friendly smile from the public in an Aston. Another car to compare could also be the Maserati GranTurismo, as I'm sure you'll get full support from Vicki on that one!

I have a phase 2 Continental GT V8 (twin turbo) here in Australia with 31,000 miles. Since the engine is really Audi, many of the parts of the car under the skin are Audi or even VW.The trick is knowing which ones. Any bespoke Bentley parts are expensive, especially here in Australia as they come from Crewe. But with a knowledgeable after market European car specialist, these cars are not too expensive to own and run. My service people use Liqui Moly oils and genuine VAG parts and the Continental is a happy car.

Im so glad you did this. I was given a chance to buy a 2007 continental flying spur for £7999. It had one issue, it was a none starter - the starter motor had been diagnosed to be the issue. I still thought this would be a great bargain for a car I can use to comfortably cruise up to the football games on the weekend in. The excitement very shortly came to an end when I had quotes from £4,500 to as high as £8k for a starter motor change 😱 then I looked at the maintenance and common issues and it would probably be the best way to go bankrupt for a working class person like me. I know the cars not aimed at people like me but, a Bentley for £8k sounded great! My research and speaking to a couple of owners having brought the phase 1 w12’s have spent more than what they paid(£33k each) for the cars in their 5 year ownership. 😮

Sam I am in the same boat! I really like both early and later cars until I went to view one... Tried to ignore the sweet smell of nappa hide and the condition as he started by showing me the history and the last invoice was for over £10k. £10K!! It needed starter motor (engine out), heat temp sensors, TPMS units, various sensors, 12 coils, 12 plugs, turbo gaskets, solenoids, lambda sensors and 46 (46!!) hours of labour. My heart got a kicking from my head and still sore about it.... Beautiful cars but they just need so much attention as the motors are crammed in with dreaded early 2000s VW tech. Oh before I go early cars need the vacuum hoses replaced as they go brittle after several years and Bentley decided to run them across the top of the transmission and that £25 part needs the engine out. It's really to ensure maximum revenue for Bentley dealers.... Let's cream every penny out of these rich folk! I'm thinking Lexus LC now as the shock pushed me in the opposite direction.

The interior is the best place to be - no one does interiors better than Bentley. I have a Ferrari 612 as well and that is a totally different machine, much more of a driver’s car. But my biggest concern was the "tosser" issue. I do want to enjoy driving amazing cars, but I don't want anyone to ever think that I feel that I am better than them, or God-forbid, a snob. And ultimately, that's what pushed me to the Benz. Yes, it is just like the Bentley: over $200K new; incredible interior finish, ride and performance. But we see so many Benzes every day, that nobody really pays attention to them. Whereas, the Bentley gets noticed. Hell, I notice them. So, thank you again for this video. Sam, you're a Bentley guy. You belong in a Bentley. We want to see you grand touring in your own Bentley. Phase one or phase two who cares, W12 engine and beautiful leather seats and a great ride. I can't wait to watch those road trip videos in the future. God Bless

If you can stretch to it I think it's worth the extra £'s for the 2nd generation. Inside and out they look much more modern.

I have a 996 turbo as a daily. It’s ace tuned to 500bhp and not so expensive I’m scared to park it’s up. I reckon that’s a good shout Sam

Have you thought about an Golf R, A35 AMG, Hyundai i30n, Civic Type R? All practical for the boring stuff, and can be lots of fun when in the mood.

I bought a 2nd hand Bentley and lost two tyres to pot holes in 3 months! Completely new vacuum system (which Bentley designed in plastic! ) AC condenser, Headlining etc etc etc. An absolute money pit 🤨 and I was told by the service dealership it was very good compared to many!

The V8 was very good engine, much lighter compared to the W12. Obviously it is an expensive car to maintain but the mechanic is solid plus the shape and details is a super high standard vehicle and it still looks far more expensive ! It is a four by four that allows you to do drive it anywhere in every season

You and I are always thinking of the same things. I need a motorway cruiser for the garage and I've been thinking about an old bentley too. I would also like an M5. You can get an F10 M5 for £18-22k. If I was spending 40k, I'd get the f10 generation of M5 which has Xdrive and fantastic self driving. The only thing is boot space. I don't have an SUV so I think S4 / RS4 would be wiser.

Don’t do it Sam my cousin had an early Flying Spur, some wood trim was broken that was 600$, the suspension went out that was 10k, paddle shifters broke after a while and he sold it. 😂

a while back i bought a Bentley continental flying spur it had been a one owner from new seemed good but in 18 months of ownership it cost me £8000 in repairs!! i got rid, it does seem that one would expect a high quality build from Bentley but given my experience and the car you showed they are not well made. I have a BMW now totally trouble free and much better build quality

Absolutely makes sense, no point putting miles on the CS or the GT3 just doing boring journies within the uk, how about a giulia quadrifoglio? They’re amazing cars, you always rave about them but you’ve never actually owned one!

Nothing worse than a trade plate stuck in a windscreen to ruin a test drive. Much better to properly secure them front and rear on the exterior of the car as is the intended procedure. Those early Continental GT's can be a real problem. Look great value but mostly a disaster waiting to happen. Thank you.

I’m watching a guy sitting in a porche who is not happy and complaining about what his next purchase should be .

The ONLY vehicle I would consider (reliability, servicing costs, QUALITY) is the Lexus LC 500 convertible.
