Your VHF antenna connection is extremely important, the crimp & Solder connectors aren’t my go to choice.. I am an automotive guy and would prefer a sold connection of the wires following a nice solder bond that is visible and repeatable in conjunction with heat shrink that has a good marine rated epoxy for a good seal. Just a thought .. Like what your doing , glad your doing your homework..

Pro tip- Make your marks like you did at first, then use a HOLE PUNCH to put a divot in the center of each mark. Make sure the divot is deap. This will then assure your drill bit doen't walk and go away from center of your mark. Happy sailing my friends.

It may have been said already but you should get a small butane soldering iron that can also shrink the wire splices. Also some flex head gear wrenches will make most of your jobs go so much easier.

My dad and we had a 30 foot Contest high ratio sloop and used to get real excited if we ever left a winch handle laying out board of the cockpit area. To the point my sister used to hate sailing with his rules. Hey 50 years ago the winch handles cost maybe $40 !!!

Well, drlling those holes and sealing with butyl is second best. You‘d much rather drilled a wider hole and fill it with epoxy. Once it´s cured drill the apropriate holes and do the sealing as you did. There will never be a chance of moisture penetrating inside your decks sandwich. Another thing - Jacklines: why do you think is it necessary to have them attached on the back with a snap shakle? Do you think it necessary to undo that line in a hurry? As far as I am concerned I would never use snapshakles on lifesupporting harnesses as they tend to get loose accidentally. I would much rather fasten them jacklines with a soft shakle, being much cheaper, lighter and extremely reliable.

NMEA0183 has separate talkers & listeners. The wiring colours are always the same. You can connect a single talker to several listeners (so your GPS (talker) could be connected to the VHF & chart plotter (both listeners) for instance) BUT you can't connect more than 1 talker into the same circuit.

Guys when drilling the holes go a little over sizes scrape a little of the core out then use thickening epoxy to filled the hole let dry then drill with the right size bit this is to protect the core using the tape is not enough it would leak over time Just a heads up Just a heads up

A backing block on the Wichard folding padeye is highly recommended due to the high loads this fitting may experience.

Its easy to use those connectors but you really need a heat gun. I use them all the time with my ham radio hobby building. Even a gas powered solder gun will work better than your lighter! Either of those are cheap and easy to use.

when clamping the line down put the locking side away from the side so it doesn't rub. you might also find wrapping it with leather or tuff cloth will keep it from damaging your gel coat.

not sure I like snap shackle on the jack stays. Something snags on that shackle pin and it opens? Use regular shackle and tighten up snug.

The snap shackle is just another failure point. Just cow loop the jack line to the pad eye. Speaking of which backing plates required for high load hardware. Ditto on comments to over drill your holes, remove core material, fill with epoxy then butyl tape.

Hey guys, I suggest simulating falling overboard (at anchor) and getting back aboard. You may find it more difficult than you think…especially if your PFD goes off. Make sure you have a knife attached incase you need to cut away. And practice Mandy getting you aboard if you are unconscious or incapacitated. It’s harder than you think. Good luck guys!

Jackstays should be as close to the centreline of the boat as possible, to hopefully stop the crew before they go overboard. Your routing of the jackstays does not really achieve that. You could try "crossing" the jackstays from port to starboard and vice-versa.

mineral spirits dissolves butyl tape its an easy cleanup. But the larger squeeze out can be collected and reused.

In any video on mast climbing, you will hear: "do not use a snap shackle." This is a similar situation. Theres is a lot of potential for something openning the shackle. I believe your previous set up was better. Cleats are much stronger than pad eyes,

Funny! I laughed at your disclaimer about using a lighter. I usually use a lighter too but I switched from the small lighters to the long lighters so I don't burn my thumb holding the striker wheel. I have found similar electrical wire color changes on many things and have learned to hook everything up with removable connectors first then do the soldering or crimp connectors.

Firstly, congrats on parenthood! Forget the clamoring fans and 'demands' of a YT channel, you know what matter most right now. On the jackstays, an epoxy oversize hole would have been better, but it will work for a while (and there are a lot of other more important things affecting 'the value' of your boat!) But PLEASE change the snap shackle for a safer one, either a shackle you can mouse or the same double gate clips you have on a harness, (this isn't a scenario where a quick release like a spinnaker halyard is needed), this is safety.

There is a product called Tef Gel...expensive as all hell...but it works...I have taken apart a mast a did 15 years previous and it was easy. use sparingly, but it gives a microscopic layer between SS and alum.

For the GPS on VHF, I believe you already have an external GPS for the chartplotter, GPS which is connected to your smartpilot, nope ? You can connect one of the output (or the only output, I don't recall well) of your smartpilot to your VHF using a regular house phone line wire, and it sends the GPS signal to it, no need for an additional GPS :) This is what we've done on our Beneteau Oceanis 343 Clipper.

Dann durch das ausgehärtete Epoxy mit dem finalen Bohrdurchmesser durchbohren. Ansonsten kann Wasser in das Decks-Sandwich eindringen und das äußert sich nicht direkt, aber später in übler Scheisse....

..... your having the bimini width to the toe-rail makes so much sense, whenever you show it I think, "boy they were smart doing that, brilliant idea" ..... don't have the answer but always think it would be nicer to have the lifelines farther inboard so one would be restrained before falling overboard. Saw someone that had two tethers so they clip and reclip, they had it so they could clip to the mast .... like those solder heat shrink connecters, yes the heat and shrink process is always so fickle, who gets out the heat gun when one has a flame and you can burn your thumb as the lighter gets hot .. smilin .. think most are in that boat ... also have to say Alex, thx for your humor that you throw in, makes me chuckle and laugh ..... thx for the share Alex & Mandy .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ..

We have another lifeline in our cockpit where we’re tethered when we’re not on deck. Yeah we also have the double tether for reclipping if necessary. The only choice that makes sense :)

The being on deck is the part I think of as being scary with the life line at ones feet and if one does stumble in the dark there is the possibility of going over, with the life line stretching and the length of the tether you are wet and trying to figure out a way to get back top side. I just think that the life line system should not even allow the possibility of going over. Some bright spark will come up with a solution ... thx for your reply .... have a rocking fabulous week .....

You can have a 12 v relay with delayed cut off. Then you, for sure, just use the water drain pump for as long as your settings. I don’t know about your piping and pressure pump, but you can control the usage of your shower consumption in the same way. Look it up at google or here on KZbin. ( I don’t believe they are expensive maybe 30-50 euros ) To remove bottom paint or any other “oil”-paint, use soft soap and “kitchen” plastic wrap. Simply apply the soft soap with a natural hair brush, spray it with a dust of water, and then cover it with the wrap for some hours. The high ph value of the soft soap will soften the paint, and it’s a lot easier to scrape off. It’s very inexpensive, try it out on whatever paint you need to remove. Remember protecting yourself especially your eyes ! ! ! ( the skin on your fingers grows back :-D )

Do not put holes in your boat. 6 inches away was a perfectly good tie off place for your jack lines. Every hole decreases the value of your boat. And you did not do it properly.. It is cored...so a hole is drilled, then a dental tool is used to clear out the core, the that space is filled with epoxy, then you can attach the fitting. This is why it decreases the value of your boat. it is about a 3 day process.

Alex good on you for solving the wiring crap. I would have completed that connection exactly as you did using common sense, something the product design engineers obviously do not possess. I applaud you guys commitment to life safety, putting it before $$$$ by ensuring all the required equipment is installed before you leave the dock. How much room do the diapers take? 🙂😉 Glad you learnt about using heat guns. Best find out at what temp the solder in the solder sleeve melts before making heat gun choices. Several types of solder most prefer 60/40 some Silver and sometimes melting point changes. Take care especially with the little one on board. Just a question, how come you didn’t put a backing plate under those pad eyes to spread out the load, you know just in case… anyway 👍👍👍👍😉🙂

It felt like the spacers and the thickness of the deck was plenty of surface area to spread. Also, keeping in mind that the pull is lateral a plate wouldn’t really do much IMHO. But I’m happy to be schooled

Ja, tatsächlich. Habe einfach bei den TX/RX Kabeln die Polarität vertauscht. Natürlich nur beim signalkabel, NICHT beim 12V. Hier ging es aber um eine dedizierte gps Antenne zum vhf hin. Es kann sein dass du einen NMEA multiplexer benötigst, damit die Signale kompatibel sind. Dafür weiß ich aber zu wenig um es dir konkret sagen zu können. Wir haben z.b. einen multiplexer, um B&G mit Raymarine Sea Talk sprechen lassen zu können.
